Diggle and Tan's Shadowland
Shadowland is a quick read. It's definitely the first drop of Andy Diggle's rollercoaster that represents DD's ongoing life as the head of the Hand. I don't know if these big events write themselves or not but this comic came way too easy. It gives us what we want maybe all too fast. Bullseye's helicopter escape seems too familiar. Bullseye doesn't waste time heading for Hells kitchen. DareDevil and the Hand now reside in the massive temple built in place of the building Bullseye demolished back in last years DareDevil Dark Reign: the List. So it sure makes it easy for anybody to find our favorite horn head. The book has some nice fight scenes but we all want the confrontation between DareDevil and Bullseye. Diggle and Tan aim to please and we get it. From the moment DD steps on the roof of the temple, where he first encounters Bullseye, we realize this is a different DareDevil. What has obviously changed is DD's uniform. As we hear DareDevils words to Bullseye, we realize so has his whole demeanor. He truly has changed into something dark and Matt Murdock ceases to exist. Despite what words were spoken between Bullseye and DD the ones that hit me ominously was DareDevil's command to the Hand "TAKE HIM!". That's the moment when I believed the lawyer Matt Murdock ceased to exist as well as the justice he imposed through the mask of the Man without fear. The ending of course makes the book pique interest to more than just DareDevil fans. I know this is the moment Diggle is building Shadowland on because of what it means for DD and we all know it isn't looking good. The death of Bullseye comes off cold, even though its what all fans and DD may have wanted at one time. There was no real satisfaction. It has no emotional reason thus making our hero a murderer which I'm sure is Diggle's intent as we head to the next chapter in DareDevil #508.
