razzatazz's Seven Soldiers: Zatanna #1 - Talking Backwards - Sdrawkcab Gniklat review

    Here, there and everywhere

This entire 4 part miniseries was difficult for me to read, but not because it was all bad.  It is hard to read because it is a bit all over the place.  The first issue opens with Zatanna at a support group for superheroes (which is as strange a concept I have ever seen in comics) and details her recent struggles as a hero.   A fair portion of this story is told in a flashback because of this.  There is one excellent part where Zatanna and a group of characters are trapped in an alternate dimensions, and in one of the strangest examples of breaking the fourth wall that I have seen, they are climbing out of the comic book panels.  In the end Zatanna meets a young magic user who she takes on as an apprentice despite her own inability to cast spells.  Overall the issue was fun, but too lacking in direction.   There are different plot lines popping up here, there and everywhere it seems.  I also liked the art, but couldn’t get behind it 100%.   Some panels are awesome, others are kind of sloppy.
