    100 Words Or Less

The thrilling conclusion to the first arc of Secret Avengers ends here. Nova is possessed and must be stopped before he awakens the Darkest Child and opens a gateway to another reality. But the Secret Avengers aren't the only ones that want to stop him; the Shadow Council has sent suicide bombers to destroy the planet in a bid to prevent Nova from succeeding and it's up to Ant-Man to save the day? And what happens when the team finds out Nick Fury is part of the Shadow Council?

    So Then I Said...

Lots of action in this issue. I mean, A LOT. Steve Rogers dons Nova's helmet and is imbued with Nova Force, enabling him to take on the possessed Nova. The rest of the team have to fight some tentacle thing and are quite busy themselves. It didn't seem Moon Knight and Black Widow had much to do this issue. Perhaps Ed Brubaker is saving them for a situation they would be more capable in, like something back on Earth. In any case, I still like the entire team and the team dynamic. It looks like Nova will not be a permanent member of the team and there may soon be a new team member to take his place. Ant-Man had a pivotal role this issue, which should help his position on the team and in the eyes of the rest of the team members.

I liked that this arc only took four issues to tell but I guess as a result of such a compact storyline, some things did feel a little too easy, like Ant-Man saving the day in the portal and Steve Rogers defeating Nova. On the other hand, I'm glad Brubaker didn't drag out this issue to create two issues. With the first arc over, we now get to focus on Nick Fury and the Shadow Council. The Shadow Council and the Secret Avengers both sound very black-ops and mysterious, so that should make for a good battle.

    Bottom Line

I've enjoyed this series very much and having Steve Rogers lead this team is just perfect. I don't have any bad things to say and I look forward to the writing and the art for many issues to come. This has yet to disappoint me so it should come as no surprise that I think this issue is Worth It.

I think I've discovered what my problem with this series is. It's not fun. Is it good? Yes. Is the art top-notch? Yes. Is the story cool and does it have mega-geek moments?  Yes. Is it fun? Well... not really. It's just that Brubaker isn't a goofy-jokey kind of writer. That doesn't mean it's bad, it's just not my normal cup of tea. Now, having said that, it's still a consistently good book and it's got some great writing and art so let's get to it.   The issue opens with Sharon Carter trying to...
