The Good
This film is pretty funny, but it's even funnier if you're into the whole video-gaming culture. One of the best bits in the film is a running gag involving Scott's insecurity about his haircut. Some of the most enjoyable aspects of the film are some of the same things I've enjoyed from Hot Fuzz and Walking Dead. There's this style that director Edgar Wright has when it comes to scene transitions that I really enjoy. A character will pop into the scene and spook someone else, and both of those characters will appear in the next scene. I guess it's pretty hard to explain. This film was actually really enjoyable when there wasn't any action in it. It was a typical guy gets girl, guy loses girl, guy gets girl back story with a dash of comedy, mostly based in this weird awkward reality where characters relate to each other through bizarre dialogue that really does work well. This has been the only time, since Arrested Development that I liked Michael Cera in a role. He usually plays the awkward "teen" who has trouble conversing with women. He does that here too, but this time, it works very well. The best part, for me, was actually seeing this film with a few hundred die-hard Scott Pilgrim fans, so I could get a glimpse of who the audience is. Before that, I knew one Scott Pilgrim fan (comic-wise), and the rest of us couldn't stand it. The crowd was great. Annoying, but great. Lots of cheering and laughing at almost everything in the film, which helped me gauge the all important question "who in the heck is this film for?"
