Schism Teaser ImageDespite the promotional material and press releases about the importance of Schism to the world of the X-Men, the story does not take place in the main X-Men titles such as Uncanny X-Men, X-Men Legacy or the relatively recently published X-Men.
Instead, the majority of the story arc takes place in the five-issue limited series X-Men: Schism. The only exception to the rule is the inclusion of Generation Hope issues #10 & #11 as the youngest of the Five Lights, Oya, will have a role to play in the story arc.
The Whole of of X-Men: Schism will be written by Jason Aaron, the on-going writer of three Wolverine titles (chronologically published: Wolverine, Wolverine: Weapon X, and Wolverine). However, each of the five issues will be drawn by a different artist (the majority of whom have been employed as regular pencillers for on-going X-Men titles in the past).

Plot Summary
Prelude
In the months leading up to the publication of X-Men: Schism, Marvel released the mini series Prelude To Schism on a bi-weekly basis. The limited series showed the X-Men tentatively awaiting Cyclops' decision regarding an oncoming & unrevealed enemy. Each issue covered the same time period as experienced by four key leading members of the X-Men: Professor X, Magneto, Cyclops & Wolverine.
The events were repeated over and over, but from different perspectives. The X-Men appear to be tense awaiting some sort of cataclysmic battle which they repeatedly state that they cannot win or hope to survive against. While waiting for Cyclops' final decision, other popular members of the X-Men debate which course of action they feel would be best: to stay & fight or guide mutantkind to safety away from Utopia. Ultimately, Cyclops made the decision to stay on Utopia and fight the on-coming enemy.
Trouble With The United Nations
The Return Of Kid OmegaAfter Cyclops delivers a speech to the United Nations asking for all Sentinel programmes around the world to be decommissioned, the UN Building is attacked twice: once telepathically by Kid Omega, and then by a small troop of Sentinels. As a result of this event, several countries begin to mobilise their Sentinels. The X-Men observe the news broadcasts, and Cyclops commands Emma Frost to put every mutant on a global alert despite Storm's warnings not to fan the flames. Wolverine bonds with the youngest of the Five Lights, 14 year old Oya, by buying her a doll and eating ice cream together.
It is revealed that 12 year old prodigy Kade Kilgore had infiltrated Utopia to release Kid Omega. While the UN was being attacked, young Kilgore usurped his father's position as CEO of the Kilgore Company & assassinated his father by shooting him as he fell out of a flying car. A new Hellfire Club welcomes him as their new Black King.
Lasting Impact
X-Men: ReGenesisCurrently it remains to be seen what the giant cataclysmic event which was being predicted in Prelude To Schism was. What is clear is that the events of Schism will leave the X-Men divided. It is possible that the event could be the upcoming Avengers vs. X-Men crossover, slated to begin in April 2012.
Promotional material for Schism used the tag line, "United No More". On June 09, 2011 (before the first issue of X-Men: Schism had been released) Marvel had already announced that events from Schism would lead to the cancellation of Uncanny X-Men in October 2011, the flagship X-Men title. After a week of fan speculation, a press released in June 16, 2011 announced that Schism would be followed by X-Men: ReGenesis, a story arc that will see the launch of two new X-Men titles; Uncanny X-Men and Wolverine And The X-Men. Unlike the Genesis of 1991 which saw the launch of X-Men, the X-Men will not act as two separate yet united teams of Gold & Blue. Instead each title will focus on two groups of X-Men operating in different terms & paradigms to the other. The Uncanny X-Men title features a team consisting of Emma Frost, Cyclops, Danger, Magneto, Magik, and a Cytorrak enhanced Colossus. Meanwhile, Rogue, Gambit, Wolverine, Beast, Storm, and a host of other mutants star in Wolverine and the X-Men.
