History
Sarah Williams was a typical teenage girl who happened to be obssessed with medieval fantasy lore. After a particularly unpleasant evening, Sarah was forced to babysit her infant brother, Toby, against her wishes. In jest, she recited an ancient incantation, summoning the goblins of a parallel dimension to take her brother away. Her request was granted, and Toby was whisked away by
Jareth, the Goblin King. Sarah shortly afterwards encounters Jareth, and pleads with the Goblin King to give her her brother back. Jareth is confused, and refuses to give Toby back. However, he issues a challenge to Sarah. If she can
Sarahsolve his labyrinth, locate his castle beyond the Goblin City, and find Toby within thirteen hours, the baby will be allowed to return to her plane of existence. If Sarah fails, then Toby will be transformed into a goblin, and Sarah will be trapped in his dimension, forever. Sarah accepts Jareth's challenge, and soon finds herself lost in the peculiar realm ruled by the Goblin King. She meets a dwarf named
Hoggle, using fly spray to kill fairies at the entrance to the labyrith. Sarah bribes Hoggle to aid her with her plastic jewelry, and the two proceed into the labyrinth. It is later revealed that Hoggle is a minion of Jareth, and is working for the Goblin King.
Sarah and Hoggle acquire two other traveling companions that they encounter inside of the labyrinth.
Ludo, a kind monster that she rescues from Jareth's minions, and Sir Didymus, a fox-like knight that rides a sheep dog similar in appearance to Sarah's own dog back home. The motley crew sets out to solve the labyrinth. They solve a "Knights and Knaves" logic puzzle to escape certain death. Afterwards, they meet a peculiar species of creatures known
The Labyrinth as the Fire Gang, that tries their hardest to remove Sarah's head. They make a detour through the Bog of Eternal Stench, and Sarah finds herself inside of an elaborate recreation of her bedroom inside of a junkyard inside of the labyrinth. Hoggle gives Sarah a potion-laced peach at Jareth's insistence, and she finds herself in a beautiful yet bizarre ballroom masquerade. Once there, Jareth attempts to make Sarah forget the thirteenth hour deadline she has to find Toby. However, Sarah breaks the illusion, and makes her way into the Goblin City with her traveling companions. Hoggle confesses his treachery, and Sarah forgives the dwarf.
Sarah confronts Jareth in his castle, an impressive feat of architecture that mirrors the work of the late M.C. Escher. He pleads with Sarah to forget the baby, and to join him in his realm as his queen. Sarah manages to defeat Jareth by reciting an incantation from the same book that was used to kidnap Toby. The realm around Sarah begins to crumble away, and she finds herself back in her bedroom, where the clock strikes twelve in the morning. Jareth becomes an owl, flying away, and Toby is returned to his nursery, safe and sound. Sarah questions if she has crossed over the bridge between youth and adulthood. She sees her newfound friends through the mirror in her bedroom, and wonders if this will be the last time that she sees them. They assure her that they will always be there for her, should she "need them", and she reassures her friends that she will always need them in her life. They appear in her bedroom, and have a joyous celebration. Jareth watches the party from a tree branch outside, and then flies away into the night sky.
