Now you can just imagine seeing 2011-2015 on these tickets.
Now you can just imagine seeing 2011-2015 on these tickets.

Well, this is relief. The San Diego Union-Tribune has reported that Comic Con international will be staying in San Diego… at least until 2015. The deliberation stemmed from negotiations regarding the prices that surrounding hotels had been charging during the convention. You’ll remember that room costs at SDCC this summer were widely criticized as outrageous and exploitative of the show’s captive audience. There’s also the lingering issue of there not being enough room in the convention center to hold the con, anymore. As part of this resolution, the number of dedicated convention hotels rooms has been double to around 14,000 and Manchester Grand Hyatt, San Diego Marriott and Hilton San Diego Bayfront are giving up 300,000 square feet of meeting space to the convention, for free.

Other (very vocal) cities who were vying to host the convention in San Diego’s place were LA and Anaheim. Considering that Comic-Con brings$163 million and the highest hotel occupancy rate is the highest in the country to San Diego, you can understand why keeping this “whimsical” trade show was such a competition. The only lingering issues right now is the need for a more permanent expansion of the convention center - - a project that still needs to round up $750 million for completion.

Big numbers aside, I’m relieved by this, simply because I love San Diego as a location. It’s a beautiful place to visit, if only for just one week out of the year. As much as I like my new home town, I don’t think every single major event needs to take place in LA and Orange County, even if there is more space.

So there you go… the answer to one of comics’ biggest topics du juor. Are you Comic Vines delighted or disappointed by this?

That's Awesome news! I live between both orange county and San Diego County and as much as it might be cheaper for me to drive to Anaheim there is something to be said about the location of the SD Convention Center. I Remember the one year the USS Ronald Regan had a huge party and I walked right out back of the convention center sat down and saw the beautiful ocean water fire works.
I Love the mass transit trolley that allows me to enjoy evenings in both Old Town and the Gas Lamp without having to drive. The extra hotel rooms used for panels and the awesome move of the Anime over to the Hotels finally left me some room to breath on the floor! There so many wonderful after hour things to do their that staying a week before and a week after is actually quite nice. One of the things I would love to see is Comic Vine throw a shindig so we can all meet you wonderful guys and Gals!

San Diego is a major convention center city.

There's only a handful of convention centers in the US that are bigger than the San Diego Convention Center. I think New Oreleans and Las Vegas are the only two that are bigger in size. I'm unsure about the new one in Anaheim, but I think that might be bigger too. With the new SD Convention Center expansion, it'll probably be as big or bigger than the Vegas.

First of all, it has less and less to do with comic books every year. Let's just call it the San Diego Con (as in con job) where the city barely has the capacity to keep up with the ensuing demand but loves the revenue stream.

I would love to have the Con in NYC but ideally, Vegas is the Best place for the Con. It has the hotel capacity without bankrupting a nerd in hotel prices. I mean, my brother goes to San Diego Con every year, it's NOT cheap. It's quite a joke.

Not only does Vegas have the space but the fun 24/7...

Do it and MAYBE you'll get me to leave NYC for a Con...MAYBE.

So happy about this. I loved San Diego when I visited, it was a lot like Australia but with Mexicans and street names I couldn't pronounce and I'd love to go back. LA on the other hand was no fun at all.

I've had a few conversations with vendors and store owner at comic con  the last couple of years on this topic. Most  of them have told me they really don't like Vegas at an alternative because more people are inclined to spend money elsewhere than on the floor. They feel if people gamble all their comic book and merchandise money away in the casinos, then chances are they won't buy as much!

meh, I went to SDCC for about 14 years and finally gave up two years ago, I have yet to regret the decision. It pales in comparison to what it used to be and forgetting its roots is a shame.

Spending $750 million on the expansion is a waste. Not nearly enough conventions happen per year there at the convention center to justify the cost and most of them can't even fill half of the space available.

It would make more long term sense to break SDCC into two conventions separated by at least six months. The first can be for actual comics and the retailers/dealers that sell them (like it used to be) and the second can be for comic related media and all the other crap they try to shove in. Doing it this way would make more money and allow for larger specialized shows and it would have a positive monetary impact on comic book retailers/dealers since less of them show up every year because they are being pushed out or can no longer afford the ever increasing booth prices.

I think breaking off and having the media convention would also allow more space for the studios to show their works and (I think) it would be the first full size convention dedicated to the tv/movie industry that is open to everyone and not for a specific thing like sci-fi, star trek, star wars, etc.

Being that I have relatives in San Diego I can stay with, and no such relatives in LA, I'm happy with it staying.

Now, hopefully the Convention center gets expanded, or they find a way to get steady movement of attendees through panel rooms.

Either that, or schedule panels nobody wants to go to before panels everyone wants to go to. ;-)

First let me say this, SDCC is the best thing that ever to a geek or nerd like myself, why go and mess with the most perfect location in the world for this event.

Second, shame on those who try to take advantage of comic con to fill their pockets on the young and hard working individuals who practically take out a year to save for this event so they could attend once a year.

Third SDCC shouldn't get any bigger then it is, why let the -regular or normal folk-turn it into a commercialized disco, I'm find with the numbers from this years attendance.  Keep it geek baby!
