One of the most famous accents in comics is of course the southern accent of Rogue.   Rogue is already a pretty cool character, but the accent adds something more.   And while I do like the accent it leads me to wonder, if they are going to show her accent why don’t they show others?   Here accent is also mostly only represented by changing “I” to “Ah” though there are a lot more subtleties of the southern accent which that skips over.   There are a few accents in comics which do get shown, Captain Boomerang for instance, but that is as often to add a comedic element to the character, not to add depth like it does with Rogue.   The Cheetah's assistant Chuma is also often shown speaking in accented English.  Certainly there are people from all over the world represented in comics but their English accents are mostly neglected.   The most common among these would be British or Canadian heroes, but when they are portrayed their accents are not really noticeable.   They are some subtle differences between pronunciation between Americans and Canadians though are accents are almost identical.   Would it look right to have talking with a subtle Canadian accent, at least as perceived by Americans?

Probably not.   I do agree that the portrayal of Rogue’s accent in comics makes her more compelling (and sassy) and adds a unique aspect to her character.   Still a part of me wonders whenever I read her words why all characters don’t get the same treatment.

With Rogue, then the substitution of 'Ah' for 'I' doesn't bother me so much.  In fact, at times that's the only thing that keeps her accent 'Southern'.

When Wolfsbane 'dropped' her Scottish accent, she also lost a lot of her key personality.  As if it's lazy writing not to try to write with an accent or to understand that character.

I think it matters. I love the thought of how a guy like Batroc would sound.

Funny you should mention the accents, because in my opinion they bring out character all the more.  For Rogue's sake, the Mississippi based Southern accent is as a part of her as Remy LeBeau's Acadian Franglish.  Of course, whenever I read them in comics I immediately think to their voices that portrayed them in the Animated Series.

Didn't Siryn lose her accent? Because between Joe Kelly's DP run and that little.... scene in X-factor 200, she's totally not talking like an Irish schoolgirl. :P

Just waking into it, but Wolverine no. His dialect shows in his idiosyncratic " bubs " and " ol' knucklehead (and if you can tell me what that really means, I'll love you forever) ",
but logically given how long he's been alive, and how much of the world he's been back and forth in, he wouldn't have a Canadian accent, more so his lingo would be
a somewhat of a hybrid Melting Pot affect.

I do like the accents, but first instances how often are British characters shown with any accent?

    @CATPANEXE:

Come on?!?!?  It took me half an hour to paste together that Wolverine image.

@RazzaTazz: Not too often I must admit.  I do like the extent to which recent writers kinda played up Mon-El's accent as being British though, which I thought was quite interesting.  I guess that means apparently all Daxamites have true Brit in them. ::shrugs:: Kinda hilarious if you ask me.

I always find it funny when Canadians are shown saying 'aboot', since it's similar to how Scottish accents were portrayed when I was a kid.

Some written accents don't translate internationally though. "Eh" isn't pronounced as 'Ay' in Britain, so a lot of people read it as a disgruntled noice similar to 'uh'.

The one which always troubled me the most was Jet from the Global Guardians.  I was re-reading Millenium recently and noticed how Green Lantern's ring wouldn't translate her heavy Caribbean accent though it was translating everything else, because she was still speaking English.  I think they were trying to make a point that we are all different and unique or something, but as a girl reading it for the first time (well even then it was back issues because I think Millenium came out before I was born) I couldnt understand a word she was saying.  A good point maybe, but one lost on me at the time.

I like reading Gambit's accent but cant stand reading Rogue's. I like Rogue, alot actually, but sometimes reading her dialog makes her come off (for me anyways) like she's an opening act for Larry the Cable Guy.

Accents are beyond necessary in a comic. They are essential. If you're going to show off onomatopoeia...I don't see why you would leave accents out? It allows you to really feel you know how that character would talk or sound.

Her accent is really the only thing that makes her Rouge at this point.Various artists have seemed to make it their mission to reduce her physique from where it was in the 90's,she changed her costume and no longer has Ms.Marvel's powers...so at this point she needs that accent.

    That depends on two things:

    1.  Are you a woman (or a girl if you arent old enough I guess) ?
    2.  Do you have sass (or to put that another way are you sassy)?

Notice it is impossible to answer yes to the second question if you answered no to the first one.  If you answered both affirmtive though, the answer is - YES, you might be as cool as Rogue.

Anna Paquin never did say things like "shug" to entice the trucker readers or tell Colossus he's "so beg and stroang." That isn't a typo, because that's just how I imagine someone with a skunk stripe talks even to this day.

Accents are fine with me, what annoys me is when they have something in English, and then in the corner they say "translated from the __________." Really? You wrote it out in another language, then translated it?

It adds depth to the characters where there otherwise wouldn't be, therefore it's a positive I think

Accents are not necessary but they do add a little something to a character when you try to imagine what they sound like.

Are they necessary? I'll leave that up to the people who write the stories. I myself do like accents and sometimes (in my nutball view of Marvel comics) add accents to characters who don't have them (ie: Ms. Marvel having a thick Boston Accent, the entirety of the Fantastic Four having Brooklyn Accents, though Thing has the thickest) or prefering it when characters are portrayed with accents like Black Panther in MUA 2. I like accents and find them entertaining to listen to and fairly insightful toward the character such as Buggs Bunny's Brooklyn accent, Osaka's Huston accent and Shizuru's southern belle accent in the english dubs of Azumanga Daioh and Mai-HiME respectivly (yes I prefer Dubs to subs and lets leave it at that).
