Rogue One review
WARNING: SPOILERS
One thing that I've always loved about the Star Wars universe is that just about every background character and offhand mention has its own story. If you don't believe me, just go find one of the "visual dictionary" books and look through it. This movie in particular tells the story of how the Rebel Alliance first got their hands on the Death Star schematics.
Perhaps one of the most noticeable aspect of this film is that, after all these years, they've finally provided a decent and plausible explanation for the Death Star's infamous Achilles' Heel! It really shows just how committed these people are to the franchise.
The film manages to introduce plenty of colorful and compelling characters to the Star Wars universe. (Even if most of them end up dying) There's also a few great cameos from the classics. Including R2-D2 and C-3PO, so their record of appearing in every movie remains unbroken. XD Hell, even "I Don't Like You, Either" Guy and his friend get to make a quick appearance.
The CGI used to include Grand Moff Tarkin and Princess Leia in the film was admittedly impressive, but still pretty damn noticeable. Especially given how much screen time Tarkin had. It kind of feels like they were trying to cast Peter Cushing in the movie even though he's been dead for over 20 years. Which I can't help but find just a little unsettling.
So, quick question: does anyone think there's some way Cassian and Jyn might still be alive? Because up until that point I was pretty much convinced that they were going to turn out to be Rey's parents.
But I'd have to say my favorite part of the movie was the one, the only, Darth Vader. He only appears in two scenes, but he absolutely steals the show both times. And he makes it clear that there's a damn good reason why the galaxy fears him. His iconic Force-fueled chokehold gets a grand introduction, and he later casually wastes an entire room full of Rebel troops like they're nothing!
So overall this was a great addition to the franchise and instantly one of my favorite Star Wars movies.
