Robert Downey Jr. was born in New York, New York, USA and taking after his parents, Robert Downey Sr. and Elsie Ford, his acting career began at the age of 5, when he appeared in one of his father's movies. Downey Jr's career then started to blossom as he landed multiple theater roles which garnered critical acclaim and served to elevate his career. Due to his new found popularity Downey was asked to join the cast of a younger and newer Saturday Night Live (SNL); however, he only lasted one year due to poor viewership ratings.
Following his departure from SNL, Downey Jr. had what was considered the first breakthrough of his career when he starred in Tuff Tuff, Weird Science, and The Pick-Up Artist. As a result of these younger roles Downey Jr. often associated with the group known as the "Brat Pack", consisting of young actors who were deemed future stars.
In 2007, Robert Downey Jr. was cast as Tony Stark in Iron Man, the first film released as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. When the film was released a year later, Downey Jr. was lauded for his portrayal of billionaire Tony Stark and was said to be the best part of the entire film. From there Downey Jr. would go on to reprise his role in nine more films in the MCU. He also had a cameo appearance in The Incredible Hulk, though only as Tony Stark.
Robert Downey Jr. is a classically trained actor, he attended the Stagedoor Manor Performing Arts Training Center when he was a teenager. While his very first roles were for film, he truly got his start in theater, staring in off-Broadway musicals.
