    Origin

    Rita originated in Jeff Lindsay's series of Dexter novels. The character was later adapted to television, and then comic books.

    Rita was created by Jeff Lindsay.

    Character Evolution

    Rita Bennett is a woman with a very painful past. Her first husband, Paul, was a violent drug user who subjected her to horrific abuse. The pair have two children together, Astor and Cody. Rita and the children later meet Dexter Morgan. He becomes a friend and lover to Rita and eventually, a father figure to her children.
