X-23 #17 - Misadventures in Babysitting, Part 1

5

What's X-23 do when she's not out playing the hero? She's babysitting the Future Foundation kids, obviously.

The Good

This issue is so much fun! For those of you who happen to be fans of 80's films, you might notice that the cover of the latest issue of X-23 looks a lot like the movie poster for the 1987 film 'Adventures In Babysitting.' That's no coincidence. In fact, the title of the issue is 'Mis-Adventures in Babysitting.' I was hoping that the series' writer would take the book for a more light-hearted turn, particularly after the last issue, and I am so glad she did. In issue #17 of X-23, Sue Storm and Reed Richards decide to go out to a fundraiser one evening and they call on Laura to babysit Valeria and Franklin for a night. Little does she know, X-23 will definitely have her work cut out for her.

This issue opens with Laura's return to Westchester where she comes face to face with Hellion who we haven't seen since the beginning of the series. He is relatively hostile towards X-23 and his violent nature leads Gambit to put him in his place. The reintroduction of Julian's character gives me the sense that something will go down between these two characters very soon. Laura doesn't even flinch when faced with Julian's hostility; which signals to me that he might try to act out even more to get her attention.

Again, I love Marjorie's characterization of Gambit. He's like a papa-bear! It's adorable! He definitely gets defensive and protective of Laura in this issue and it's really sweet to see. Overall though, the best scenes in the issue are in the middle and towards the end of the book. I absolutely love the dialogue between Valeria, Franklin and Laura. Marjorie's comedic timing is perfect in this issue, and the silence between the characters is worth a thousand words. It's fantastically laid out.

The Bad

Absolutely nothing. This book is so much fun.

The Verdict

The previous issue featured Phil Noto's gorgeous art, but this one features the work of Sana Takeda -- and it's perfect. Takeda is absolutely the best artist to draw Valeria and Franklin. Sometimes I see pictures of the kids and I think to myself, "they look so much older than they should." Here, both kids are drawn to appear comparable to their respective ages -- and it's perfect. I just want to squish Valeria, she's so adorable! The issue is packed full of fun and plenty of action. The series takes a light hearted turn (perfect considering how heavy the previous story arc was) and it's a fantastic read. Perfect pacing, incredible art and awesome dialogue make this one of the best books of the week. It also makes me a bit more sad to see this title go come January. If you have never read an issue of X-23 before, you can probably pick up this one and follow along.

Yeah this cover is great. I loved that movie when I was a kid myself. I'm going to enjoy reading this issue when it gets here. Too bad they decided to give the series the axe, X-23 is way cooler than Wolverine!

You know... I'm not quite sure if I'd have X-23 babysit my kids... I mean she has deep daddy issues and everything. But hey, if she's good with kids, then I'm all for it.

If there was a comic book character I'd want to babysit my kids... it would have to be either between Nightcrawler, or Magneto.

With Nightcrawler it'll always be like a circus inside the house.

And Magneto, well, he raised all his kids to be really good superheroes.

Magneto comment made me laugh, cause I just finished reading the newest Avengers Academy.

You think Hellion is hostile in this? He kept himself in check, ever since second coming the kid has had his fair share of issues. And believe it or not he was actually trying to open up and talk to her.

It was a good issue though.

I have loved Takeda's art with this book, especially how she draws kids. Val is outright adorable. And I can't stop re-reading the page with all the stacked horizontal panels. The comedic timing is excellent:

*blank*

*blank*

Val: Wanna see my *something something* temporal window?

Franklin: It lets you see dinosaurs.

*blank*

Laura: Okay.

God, I'm gonna miss this book.

babysitting makes her seem more like a teenager than a killer

The FF trust her to babysit the kids and this makes her seem good

Well, I'm going to have to get this now, just for the "Adventures In Babysitting" references.

This was a great issue. Much better than the past few ones. It's a shame X-23 is getting cancelled. I liked her babysitting the kids, and her interactions with Hellion. I especially liked how well written Hellion was, especially compared to his depiction in Wolverine & the X-Men where he was just a 2 dimensional school jerk.

If you liked that you should read the second last issue of Darkwing Duck. #17 the B cover is adventures in babysitting with launchpad and the kids from ducktales and darkwing duck.

So true about Takeda drawing the FF kids as actual kids. Valeria is, what, four? She looks much older the way other artists draw her. Fun book. Good review.

This is the potential the character has and the character work that's been done in her solo will be put in limbo once she's part of a team on AA and is there to play a role and probably not much else.

I'd like to be proved wrong but we'll see.

I preferred Noto's art but I see Takeda's working with the "lighter" material of this arc. Noto's Laura always had so much pathos that it just "fit" for me.

I like the new story but if this is the arc that X-23 is going out on I am going to be disappointed considering where she started.

I'm amazed I didn't purchase this, I picked it up and flipped through it and just didn't feel like diving into it. Knowing that the book is coming to a close or hold around the 21st issue.

Overall, I really enjoyed the issue, but I have to say that I wasn't exactly thrilled with how Hellion and Gambit were portrayed. Even though he is going through a difficult time in his life, I find it hard to believe that Hellion would be that hostile towards Laura, or that Gambit would be that insensitive to Hellion.

I'd like to know who Gambit's mystery date is and why he's nervous about it.

I totally agree. I think she'd be a perfect fit on FF.
