X-23 #14 - Chaos Theory, Part 2

5

Laura unwillingly joins the FF after an earthquake hits New York City and finds that she, Spider-Man and Sue Storm are somehow connected...

I have been loving Marjorie Liu's X-23, and the first issue that ropes the FF into her ongoing series is no different. At first I was worried about the dynamic between Laura and the FF team, but Liu quickly proves that they can all work very well together.

The Good

It's nice to see that Liu continues to keep certain elements of Laura's character constant even 14 issues into her series. It's clear that Laura has a hard time trusting people, and that getting as close as she did to Gambit was a huge progression for her character throughout the series. In this issue, Liu forces X-23 to do something she doesn't do very often -- trust the people around her, and she does this by not giving Laura any other choice. Laura meets the FF and she is immediately on the defense. That is until Sue steps in to guide her through the FF mansion, introducing her to all the FF kids. The result is some really great interaction between Laura and the kids.

Reed and Valeria quickly realize that the power Laura is harboring within her is not only connected to Spidey and Sue Storm, but it is also connected to the earthquake that recently took place in Manhattan and destroyed an entire city block. The FF team comes one step closer to solving (or at least understanding) Laura's crazy light flash/seizures.

The Bad

Nothing! This series has been fantastic and only continues to get more interesting.

The Verdict

This issue is definitely one of the best. Some of the best scenes are those featuring the Thing and X-23 -- there are very few people who aren't intimidated by Ben, and evidently, Laura is one of them. Phil Noto knocks this issue out of the park as well with some absolutely jaw dropping art work. The story is stellar and overall one of the best this week.

that cover is epic.

wasn't there a similar cover with Wolverine and the Hulk? if so, this a very good homage.

I'd say this cover is better because Laura is such a feisty little thing and Ben is like a gentle giant (when not clobbering of course).

NYX WAS crap.

X23 is saddled with being a prostitute for ever.  Why?  Because new Yorkers are apparently F3d up.  Also, stupid mutant powers are stupid.

Note, though, I don't think this makes her a bad character.  Her New X-men stuff was pretty good, what little of it there was.  And her X-Force stuff was top notch.

The cutting herself stuff... it's interesting.  Important.  But, at the end of the day, ultimately fruitless.  I'm afraid the writer wants to create some dramatic tension in the book, and uses a real world problem in an incredibly bizarre way to do so.

Consider Daken (who, oddly, also has F4 ties thanks to DR sh&t) - he has recently developed a drug habit.  A healing-factor-hurting drug habit.  Why?  I assume it's a means of making his character more interesting... only so many times you can have him sleep with guys he uses his pheromone powers on before you say "been there, seen that"...

In all honesty, though, I think X23 needs to go back to a team book.  She's not a team player, and THAT is what's got to drive her development.  Her wandering off and doing ^&$*%$ with Gambit and Spiderman and the like... all real cool, in a no-character-development sort of way.  I actually do want to see her interact with Hellion and Surge and the like... being forced to do it.  Also, the New X-men are awesome characters, well designed and culled from a cast of dozens.

This is one of the two X-titles that I can bare to read. Watching Laura become self-aware has been a joy to read, and its great to see Gambit in a role other than being Rogue's b***h.

@labarith: Now, I am inclined to agree with you.

Even though this book started with an interesting premise, Laura has shown very little character development, and even though I like these things to happen slowly, I don't really like how she travels the world and meets a world of people who are so different from her.

X-23 was a lab experimente clone, then an assassin, then she was an insecure prostitute, then X-Woman, then X-Assassin... she meddles with themes and things that characters like the FF never touched. I don't really know the series, but I doubt the word prostitute ever appeared on any of their titles. What makes Laura's story interesting is that it's coined in reality (she is the best at what she does only because she had extensive training from birth, she acts like she acts because of severe trauma, and so on), and when people take back those painful Captain Universe stints, it's just bad.

Laura should go back to the New X-Men, where there are OTHER troubled kids like her, so they can all grow together, as a next generation. I don't see why Laura is more deserving of attention than Julian, Cessily, Noriko or Anole (all who have serious identity problems) if she is going to waste her solo oportunity doing super-hero-ey stuff like a generic Future Foundation then I say pass the ball. I don't like Laura for her powers (clone of Wolverine) or anything -but- her character, which is wasted in a cosmic tale of generic comic book narrative.

I like how Liu is dedicated to the character, but making her friends with the whole Marvel Universe just sounds like missing the point.
