Worlds' Finest #5 - Three Midnights, Far From Home

2

Huntress and Power Girl head off in different directions in the latest issue of WORLDS' FINEST.

The Good

The highlight of this issue, at least for me, was the story in the latter portion of the issue featuring the Huntress. I really felt that it was a great little self-contained story where Huntress is reminiscing about the things she does when she gets out of the house. As a self-contained story, I thought it was great. However, was it relevant to the entire issue? Was it necessary? Not particularly. That is my gripe with this issue.

I think Levitz has a pretty good grasp of Power Girl's abilities and he demonstrates that well in the beginning of the issue. The girls have some entertaining banter that do liven up the mood a bit which was also nice to see.

The Bad

If you are okay with getting a "filler" issue of WORLDS' FINEST this month, then you may not mind issue #5. Aside from a scene towards the starts of the issue where Power Girl makes a pretty important discovery, not a whole lot happens in this comic. In fact, the story splits the two ladies up and each get to explain what they do when "they get out." I think this would be fine if we already hadn't seen this structure in the 4th issue of this series. It's perfectly fine to split up the two characters and delve into what each does respectively, but not for every issue. Things don't feel cohesive here; they are clearly friends but they aren't working together; and I think that's something that everyone sort of signed up for.

I admit, I am not crazy about the way these ladies are being written in this book. I don't really find myself drawn to this version of Power Girl. I'm not sure what her gripes are and what her motives are aside from just "getting back home." But if getting back home is their primary concern, why are they concerning themselves with training? Why are they playing hero? There has to be a motive aside from the fact that it's something "everyone wants to see."

The fact that PG is magically getting all her clothes burned away isn't making this reading experience any more entertaining (at least not for me). I think it's ridiculous that DC changed her costume, just so they could burn it off and have her strutting around in less clothes than before. Give her back her old costume. The reason for the hole in the chest was explained in Gray and Palmiotti's run -- it was clearly a portrayal of her self confidence. There's nothing wrong with Power Girl embracing the body she has. I would much rather see her in that costume than in her bra and panties. Just saying. It's becoming ridiculous.

The Verdict

Reading this series I find it funny that in nearly every issue, Power Girl has strategically burned through her suit in the center of her chest. This isn't a criticism, just an observation. I mean, what's the sense of giving her a new suit if you're just going to tear right through it anyway? Maybe DC should never have tried to "fix" PG's costume in the first place. Just a thought.

Like I mentioned above, this story just doesn't feel cohesive. What was the point of this story? Aside from PG's discovery in the beginning of the issue, this did feel like a fill-in (and not even a really great one). I understand that these ladies can't be transported onto their Earth immediately, but it would be great to see some stories about how they are both coping (or have coped) with the differences between the two dimensions. What about their interactions with other Supers? Why hasn't Huntress sought out this universes' version of Batman or Catwoman? I feel like there are a lot of great places this series (and this issue) can go that it simply isn't going, and that is disappointing. I was hoping issue #5 of WORLDS' FINEST would be great considering how much I enjoyed the #0 issue.

Why do some comics just have radical difference between their Gm and common rating. Its like the inverse of AVX: It gets a far better rating from fans than the ADMINS?

Everyone who disliked WF dropped it.

AVX...we're still buying and hating every minute of it.

Babs, I wouldn't worry about them finding this Earth's Batman and Catwoman. I'm GUESSING that's where the story is heading next due to the end of the book "Next: Family Matters". Again I don't know for sure, but it sounds like that is where the story is going.

Agreed on PG's suit. It really isn't all that necessary to make her wear a tattered suit every issue.

I dropped this after issue 4. Four issues of them fighting that weird radioactive man only to stop it without learning anything about what he was, how he was made, who he was working for. The straw that broke the camels back was either huntress or PG pretty much saying "well good thing he's taken care of to bad we didn't learn anything"

Really glad I read this, happier then ever that its off my pull list.

I definitely agree with your observations on PG's costume, it was frustrating seeing her get her outfit so perfectly ripped exposing her cleavage.

kinda hurts me to abandon Power Girl but alas I have to, as they'll keep making this book as long as somebody buys it and I really want this book to get cancelled so we can get a Power Girl solo book and Huntress can move onto Birds of Prey (or whatever, a solo book as well ?), and I don't like Huntress' new costume either. Jim Lee's Huntress was perfect

Power Girl's peek-a-boobs costume is insulting, and DC knows it, so they need to just give her something to wear that is not going to be the butt of sophomoric writers 'humor' every issue.

I wish this title was getting better reviews, but I wasn't impressed with anything but the art in the first issue. I love Huntress and Powergirl, I had high hopes :/

I'm not a girl, but I understand that excessive sexualization in comics happens way too much and it annoys me too. But I think with powergirl... i don't know i feel like the boob window is different. It's been on her costume since the silver age and it very much links with the self confidence she oozes. It's also usually played as a gag. I feel like Powergirl is sexy and she knows it and she owns it. As long as she's drawn like a strong beauitful woman who just happens to have larger breasts I am ok with the window. I've heard a lot of female fans who don't seem to mind it.

I'm not telling you that you should be ok with it, I totally get it could be seen as insulting. I'm just curious as to your thoughts on the window.

Unfortunately this review is pretty spot on. I'm going to keep supporting the comic because I love PG as a character, but it hurts my heart with the way they treat her. As for the costume, I really like the new design (except for her God awful hair), but you're so right about them shredding her clothes every issue. What the hell is the point of giving her a full costume if they're just going to destroy it and have her walk around half naked every issue?

I've never had much of a problem with filler issues in the realm of manga. That's probbaly becasue the series are weekly. It much be much more infuriating to wait a month for something that just sort of lingers. Let along the price of each comic. This sort of thing in comics I bet feels more like a filler arc in an anime. Those can lasts for months before you can get the main story back.

As far as Power Girl's costume. I've often been amazed how comic writers/artists can't find a balance between cheesecake or a woman who's confident in her own body. They often have these wild, overcompensating swings in different directions.

Now that I think about it. How come Superman gets indestructible clothes, but Kara get's easily damaged clothes?

a. It's not insulting in the least. Plenty of women like to show off their cleavage.

b. DC doesn't "know it". Not once did they ever claim to hate her costume. Otherwise it wouldn't have been her costume for around 40 years. It was changed for the same reason 99% of the other superhero costumes were changed. To reinforce the fact that this is a different universe from the standard DCU. In fact, Madame Xanadu of Justice League Dark is wearing a "boob window", so DC obviously feels there's nothing wrong with it.

c. What she's wearing now is far more of a joke than her iconic costume.

No Maguire in this issue, and they do another cheeseball 'burned uniform' boob window?

Ugh. Still not dropping this though, who am I kidding? I'll grab this tomorrow so I can bitch some more about it.

I literally started reading the first pages, skipped through the others without readin anything, and then just dropped it. what the hell is wrong with these guys? I totally agree with this review, and the fact they changed her costume and now do much worse, IN EVERY ISSUE, it just pisses me off. I don't really like the art either, but it's not that bad, and the writing, eh... This isn't PG

The real PG is in the pages of Ame-Comi Girls, under the right guys - Palmiotti and Gray ;D

These two stories might help new readers re-discover the WF duo's Earth 2 personalities. Helena was using a very Deep cover ( Bertinelli )story to continue to help people/Gotham and Be close to this Earth's BatFamily.... But still keep her true identity/heritage from all those great Detectives (Wayne ... Grayson ... Gordon (Oracle and The Commissioner). The persona that PowerGirl is exhibiting now has had the Earth 2 "layer" of Computer/Software mogul (Earth 2/All-Star Comics) Karen Starr added ... And if The Finest Duo gets to Earth 2 ... They could also explore Kara's(PowerGirl/JL International) Atlantis connection.  There might not be a Aquaman on Earth 2 (Duplication of Earth 1/Prime/New52) but, there could be a Atlantis with connections to Arion. Stories like this one bring the Duo closer to fitting in on Earth 1/PrimeNew 52 shift back towards the characters Earth 2 personas. Just because Kara and Helena want to get back to Earth 2 ... Will they like what they find .. Or will they "discover" that can carry on their Family missions/heritage more effectively on Earth 1/Prime/New 52?

Babs, without Kara's clothes getting off each issue, nobody would have any reason to read it. (tongue in cheek)

I did think the end portion of the issue was better than the first half, but I had issue with the Huntress story as well. I explained my problems with it in my review:

The most infuriating thing to me about issue four was how Power Girl immediately turner her attention away from defeating the monster that was killing people to stop an oil lead. She then caused a massive oil lead in the process then ignited the oil causing a massive ball of flame which would no doubt cook everybody in the nearby area. Stupidity abounds in this series.
