Wonder Woman #3 - Clay

4

Diana discovers a secret that has been kept from her, but how will she deal with it? Who can she trust?

The Good

This issue is all about trust, and although I did have some problems in the beginning with the overall organization of the story, I felt that it was incredibly compelling overall. Here is Hyppolyta, Queen of the Amazons who is supposed to be strong, domineering, who doesn't need a man -- but even she has a weakness and succumbed to her carnal desires. What's interesting about the scene and the way Hippolyta describes the relationship she had with Zeus makes it seem as though the two characters were honest with one another. In the first issue, Hermes alluded to Zeus taking on other forms to seduce women; however with Hippolyta he did not do that. With Hippolyta, Zeus was himself and they were both attracted by each other's power.

In this one issue, Azzarello not only sets up the turmoil between Wonder Woman and her mother, but also Wonder Woman and the Amazons. She feels as though she is not a part of them. She does not know where she belongs, and thus, Azzarello has broken Diana down and gotten to her very core. Who is she? Where did she come from? Where is she going? Where does she fit in? Azzarello has laid out the groundwork for all of these questions in this issue -- he's set up a foundation for his series that will allow him to explore Diana's character in a way that has never really been explored before.

Azzarello will also be dealing with the Amazons' relationship with Hippolyta; now that they know she and Zeus were together and that she gave birth to Zeus' child, will they respect her as a leader? Something tells me there will be trouble on Paradise Island.

The Bad

You might notice that if you read issue two and three back-to-back, they down't flow very well. It seems as though Azzarello skips ahead a tiny bit. The end of issue #2 left readers with heightened tension and an action packed scene. When we open issue #3 the Amazons are burying their dead. So what happened between those two scenes? It feels as if the action scene doesn't happen, or is purposely left off panel. Instead of fighting against her, the Amazon's sort of allow Strife to harass them. It seems somewhat odd and out of place.

The Verdict

Overall, this issue is fantastic. Azzarello lays the foundation for his story in this issue, and it definitely goes beyond Wonder Woman's discovery. Here he has laid the foundation for political turmoil and possible upheaval, and Hippolyta's broken relationship with her daughter. It's all very interesting. This book will leave you with a lot of questions and a desire to keep coming back for more. Not to mention Cliff Chiang's gorgeous art makes certain scenes very tasteful and beautiful. Definitely worth picking up the two previous issues if you haven't already; this is certainly becoming one of the series I am most looking forward to reading each month.

This has been one of DC's strongest relaunched titles. I was a little put off by the detour it took to lay out the change to Diana's origin, but overall it was a very good read. Strife's continued presence was odd. You dont get to start a mini war and then stick around to shoot the breeze.

This issue does accomplish everything it set out to do, laying solid foundations for latter developments. That beeing said, WHY would you want to get rid of the very unique origin story to replace it with another Zeus' progeny drama?

What's wrong with an origin story that was both epic and different?

I'm having some problems getting into this series. Think it's a combination of the art (which I really don't like) and just the general story. I dunno, just not liking it so much. Supergirl has been awesome though.

I hope its all a bad plot about breaking Diana's mind and it turns out to be a lie

Great review Sara for another wonderful issue. Despite the early revelation made of Diana's origin in the media, I still enjoyed reading just how Azzarello and Chiang handled it all here. I was impressed how Diana's origin and birth was not as straightforward as I thought it would be. Perhaps I am reading this issue and seeing some possible similarities to the secrecy and plot twists that Azzarello delivered in his 100 Bullets storylines. While I am still trying to warm up to the Zola character, I am finding some interesting characters being revealed in the Amazonians. I do hope to see more of those characters from the island featured more prominently in the future.

@notarandomguy: Unfortunately, it is not a lie. What it is, acording to Azzarello, is a way to make Wonder-Woman more relatable, because of course, nobody is made of clay and brought to life through the prayers of one's mother but a lot of readers I'm sure are children of gods being lied to because otherwise another god would kill them in their crib.

It gets better : the only two examples he gave for characters with origins people could relate to were Batman, child billionaire who lost his mind and Superman, the last son of a dying planet.

Even though DC spoiled it for us early, to soften the blow, I'm still not feeling this origin change. Not sure if I'm gonna pick this up next month.

After reading this, I think I'm locked in for at least the duration of Azzarello's run. The first 2 issues felt kind of slow, but this one seems to be what they were building towards, like the title card in a video game or a movie. I don't know much about Wonder Woman, but it was nice to see the drama unfold this issue and Diana's disgust with the situation at the end. Hoping for some cool adventures in the next few issues.

Why didn't we get this reboot instead of Straczynski's right from the go? XD

Anyway, great book!

I agree with the sense of missing scenes, it through me off when I first opened this issue, but I have to say by the story's end I felt he had really given the reader a compelling reason to believe Diana would have left home to become an American and thus 'Wonder Woman'. Throwing off her previous identity to forge a new one all her own making, loved it.

Yeah I definitely agree with everyone that although this is a great book, the origin put me off a little as well.

I actually liked the issue alot. I am totally digging the new series. I know alot of people are sickened by some of the changes but really, how many people were really reading wonder woman 4 years ago? 8 years ago? Wonder Woman and Aquaman have played the backseat in DC line up for quite some time and the reason why is complex. What is undeniable is that they just havent been well received for the past 25 years. Maybe more. DC decided to give up on action comics 1000 for zeus' sake!!! They really went all in on this one. I think in the long run this will work out better for DC. This opens a whole new avenue of potential story telling. Maybe even a JLA versus The olympic pantheon book by grant morrison and franke quitely. Ahhhh...the smell of a perfect world.

And in relation to people questioning the amazons tolerance of strife's antagonisng...She's the goddess of discord. I think they know it's best just to ignore her as opposed to upsetting her. She and loki would make a nice tandem tho

Really love the issue and the last page shows that Wonder Woman is really beautiful.

I'm just wondering, are the two snakes in the cover from the staff of Hermes?
