Wonder Woman #14 - Just Deserts

5

Wonder Woman fights her sister, and the New Gods make their very first appearance.

The Good

Last we saw Wonder Woman she had come face to face with her half-sister, Siracca, who lured her into her den by manipulating her. Siracca is a very interesting character, and much like the illusion of a child that she tricked Wonder Woman with in issue #15, Siracca herself is still very much a child.

This issue, more than any other before it really makes things more clear. If you think back to the start of her series, Diana always had trouble fitting into the Amazon society. She never quite felt at home with her sisters and she felt betrayed by her Mother. I think, and I could be wrong, that Azzarello is trying to create a sort of familial bond between her (Wonder Woman) and the other abandoned, cursed orphans of Zeus.

What I have enjoyed about this series (and this issue in particular) is that the reader learns who Diana is not by being told, but based on her actions and reactions to the events that unfold. The way she deals with Siracca, for example, is in an extremely compassionate manner, and I think that's interesting to see. Using events and big moments to define Wonder Woman is perfect, and Azzarello does a great job.

I really liked the art team on this issue. There were some moments where Wonder Woman looked a bit awkward, but in general, I found the comic to be really pretty and inviting.

Finally, the end of this issue is absolutely mind-blowing. It's hard to say what will happen next, but whatever it is, it will certainly be interesting.

The Bad

There were some moments where the art was kind of awkward, but in general it was not so bad. I think that artist Tony Atkins had been mirroring Cligg Chiang's style in a lot of his work on this series, but in this one his own style sort of peeks through. I almost like that better.

The Verdict

This is a great issue. Not only is the story absolutely fantastic, but the art in this book isn't so bad. It's an issue that really works to build up multiple facets of the story; not only does it build up Wonder Woman's character and identity, but it also brings in the concept of the New Gods. It will definitely be interesting to see how they become integrated into the plot of the upcoming story.

Yeah, I really liked it.

There was one part that I thought was weird. It was when Wonder Woman was talking as she was pulling a Matrix move and dodging all of the weapons thrown at her. It was weird.

Has anyone else noticed how much more emotionally mature and nuanced Wonder Woman is in her solo title compared to how she's portrayed in Justice League?

@jrock85: I know I have. I've mentioned that it bothers me too. Johns seems incapable of writing her as anything besides the standard warrior woman who just loves to fight. Hell, in the most recent issue of JL Superman basically has to teach Diana about empathy. It was just...so wrong.

This series is only pure awesomeness. I think part of what makes it so great is that it feels so removed from the DC Universe. The quality of this series (both in writing and art) is what I would expect if Wonder Woman ever had a Vertigo series back in the day when that was possible. (And I know that has a lot to do with Brian writing it)

Seriously, that makes me want to vomit. Glad I dropped JL a few months back.

@jrock85: Oh yeah, I was reading the panels and it was horrible, like reading a completely different character. Especially because in her own book she just looked past Siracca trying to kill her and eventually bonded with her half-sister. That's the Diana I like reading about. Whoever Johns is writing over in Justice League is not Wonder Woman: it's just some person dressed like her who apparently needs Superman to teach her how to care about people

Loved this issue. But please, Cliff come back. I don't mean to offend anyone, but Tony Akins' art makes me cringe

@jrock85: well, isnt the wonder woman in the solo series supposed to be more mature in every sense? I know the current JL is set in the "present", but I think the solo series is supposed to be set in the not too distant future.

And there's another problem: the disjointed continuity.

I originally dropped this book after issue #5 as I just wasn't enjoying this new run with the strong focus on the mythological parts of Wonder Woman's world along with the absence of familiar aspects like Steve Trevor, Donna Troy, Etta Candy, Nemesis, Artemis, the Invisible Jet, and Diana's rogues. In recent months, I've had a few acquaintances tell me how much they're enjoying this book and I've seen some positive reviews on various comic news sites so in trying to be fair(and because I've been a Wonder Woman fan since the 70s), I gave the book another shot. Here's my humble review

The best part about this issue was the introduction and origin of Siracca. She seems so innocent and alone. It was nice to see Diana utilize such compassion in dealing with her. Beyond that, the rest of the issue was a snooze-fest. We're fourteen(fifteen if you count the Zero issue) issues in, and Azzarello is still taking up valuable page time with the Olympians bickering and arguing who should upsurp Zeus' throne. Wonder Woman only appears in a total of 8 pages out of 20 in her own solo book reinforcing the opinion that she is merely a supporting character to the Olympian pantheon. Even the introductions of the caveman-looking character and Orion don't really do much to bring excitement to the book as all they did was stand around and talk as well. The art was moderate to extremely cartoony - that which I would expect in a Sunday newspaper comic strip, not a comic book. This book has not improved one bit since I dropped it almost a year ago.

1.5 out of 5

@Power_Guy: Although I think your review is a little harsh, I will agree that this issue wasn't worthy of 5 stars. I would gave it a 3. I like the cavemen scenes because I was curious as to who he is so the talking didn't bother me much. If you wanted better issue of this series then read issues 10-12. Those issues are what brought me into the series.
