Wolverine & the X-Men #20 - The Search for Something New

2

The aftermath of Avengers vs. X-Men means there are more mutants, and that means it's time for the Jean Grey School to do some recruiting...

The Good

First off, Angel's memory wipe is explained in this issue; something that is really important to his character that had not yet (to my knowledge) been fully addressed, so that I was really grateful for.

Now that Avengers vs. X-Men is over and more mutants are beginning to pop up all over the world, the Jean Grey School will have their hands full trying to recruit as many of these new mutants as possible. Essentially, the race is on -- the Jean Grey School will have to compete with the Hellfire Club, Mystique and the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants and Cyclops since all three will also be recruiting new mutants to try to bring them into the fold. This issue addresses that fact and sort of sets the stage for conflicts to come, and in that sense, it's good to see. Aside from the fact that this issue deals with an important notion and a conflict that we will likely see more of in future books, this wasn't exactly the best issue.

The Bad

Okay, so maybe I am nitpicking, but anyone who knows anything about Brazil knows that Recife is very far away from Rio de Janeiro. Now, I understand that the cover artist was trying to capture the geographic location of the fight between Angel and Mystique, but it doesn't really make sense. Not once is there a mention of Rio in the book. Recife is a completely different coastal city. Regardless of that, the cover wasn't too bad -- it's at least prettier than the interiors.

Having been an avid fan of this series, I have to say I was really disappointed in this issue. It felt very out of place and the quality was way below Jason Aaron's abilities in my opinion. It felt really poorly written and a lot of the dialogue was forced. The issue felt rushed, both in the writing as well as the art, which was really disappointed. In this issue we are introduced to a new character named Iara Dos Santos whose special abilities include turning into a shark when she gets really, really angry. First off, those powers are kind of silly, but that's beside the point. Her character is kind of strange in the beginning; at first she's ungrateful and doesn't want to hear what Angel has to say about her. By the end of the issue, however, it seems she's drank the Jean Grey School kool-aid, so to speak, and is completely immersed in her new environment, ready to take on the challenges of learning how to "control her powers." That's all well and good, but it doesn't really align with the perception we have of her when she's initially introduced.

I also felt Angel was the wrong guy for the job. Not too long ago, Angel experienced a "rebirth" and was completely changed in the process. The character, presently, has no recollection of who he was before. That means all the years with Betsy are gone as well as his time as Archangel and the experience as leader of X-Force -- this version of Warren Worthington is completely different. This version of the character not only seems naive and inexperienced, but he also seems completely unsure of himself. Having said that, is someone this unsure of themselves really the right person to be recruiting potential new students? I personally don't think so.

I really did not like the art in this issue and felt it was awkward in a lot of panels. I am not sure if it was the heavy inking, or if the expressions and the characters were just not aesthetically pleasing but it was really not pleasant to look at.

The Verdict

I think this has to be one of the weakest issues in the series. To me, it really felt like a filler and it didn't even do a great job introducing us to this new character. Is she likeable or not? In the beginning she has a terrible attitude which she alters later on, but still. It's all very strange. I really didn't like the art in this issue, I felt it was sloppy and I thought the writing and portrayals of the characters were, overall, pretty poor. There is, however, a silver lining. Since this does feel like a filler issue, you might want to save your money and just pick up the next one -- aside from the introduction to this new character, and the explanation as to why Angel doesn't remember who he used to be, this issue doesn't feel like it will be essential to read.

When I look at that cover. I think about "what the hell is going on?!".Why does Angel have Fabio hair? Why does Mystique have wings? How the hell did she miss from six inches? Why are they in Brazil?

Found this while I was looking it up and thought it was awesome.

You are in a unique place to critique the location of the cover, Sara. I never would have noticed that. Are mistakes such as this really excusable in the world of the internet and Google Image searches? It sort of reminds me of how New York is often draw or shown in movies. I've seen how many locals are frustrated about how you shouldn't be able to see certain buildings from different locations.

I would love to know who among the Jean Grey School staff made the choice to have a partial amnesiac recruit a new, emotionally unstable member.

I suppose they just went with the most recognizable Brazil item to let the reader know it was in Brazil...but not where in it. Added there might be that small thing with the creative team thinking 'no one will notice'. (But I understand it might be an annoying glitch to someone who knows the country and its geography).

I thought that Iara was kind of funny and at teh very least had an interesting power set if for no other reason it is pretty unique. You are right with the kool-aid though. I would have given it a three though, it might not have been the best but it was entertaining.

Not bothered by the cover! It was cool and I found the interiors quite good!!

Shark Girl? I would have found this silly just hearing it, but then again, this is WATX. We should be used to this by now and Jason Aaron is a riot! I confess, his AVX stuff was not to my liking, but his Wolverine run was always good for some chuckles and so was this issue! lol

O_O I'm going to have to wait till next month to read this(My pull list ships once a month)

I'll take sara's word for the comic's score, I read the preview and was already confused why angel was selected to recruit the new girl. If he has no memories and thinks he's a real angel then he has no right to go recruit a new mutant till he sorts himself out.

Sorry, that was a bit of an overreaction.

I feel like comics see that they have to be overly dark now or overly zany. I just would like a good middle ground here and there. Thing is, I really don't like Wolverine and the X-Men because I think the cast is really unlikable. They're putting each other down all the time, acting really self-righteous and other things that bother me. I guess I wouldn't mind so much if the teen book I did like wasn't be replaced by an overly dark book that is promising to kill half the characters that partake in it...(I'm talking about Avengers Arena).

Still, I liked this issue as it was more calm and took its place, and most of the cast that gets on my nerves aren't around.

I like this issue for one reason. And it's that Jason Aaron has givin this "Angel" an expiration date. I'm guessing he will keep using his Life Seed abilities until he begins to breakdown or something like that and as he dies he will use what's left of his strength and the Life Seed power to bring Warren back to life.

After reading the X universe comics this week all I can think is "great more characters to an already overflowing cast that you don't have time for",

I thought this was pretty fun. It was good to see Aaron define this new Angel, and I liked the new mutant. Only disappointed that Aaron seems to have hinted towards an end to the new Angel. I dislike the idea of bringing the old Warren back any time soon.

Does anyone feel like sending me a PM spoiling what turns out to be up with Angel's memory? I dropped this book along time ago, but that sounds like something cool to know.

IMO, a lot of comic book writers seem to be ignorant of areas they're not familiar with and come off as poor researchers. The geographical error should not have happened.

I also agree that if felt weird that Angel was the one to search for the new mutant. I'm glad he got one issue focused on him, but it should have been someone else to do it.

3 stars from me.

What is Marvel doing to Mystique? She used to have complex motives, inner moral conflict, she used to be not 100% hateful and dead set on pissing Wolverine off, she used to want more out of life than just a relationship with Rogue. They are waaaasssttttiinnngg her character and making her powers ridiculous. She joined the Hand yet instead of ninja skills now she morphs into hideous things? And a girl that turns into a shark? That's the best they could come up with?

i thought it was a good issue , my only problem was the new silver samurai . didn't really like him when he debuted in wolverine and his line about having no master would put him as the silver ronin (not a bad name .)we are going to see a bunch of new x-men and brotherhood characters and im liking angel's new abilities (his fight with silver samurai was funny and cool ). angel was lame , archangel was bad@$$, "neo-angel" is a good balance of the two , yes he is a bit goofy but it fits in this book i give it a 4 out of five .
