Wolverine #3 - Rogue Logan Part 3 of 4

4

More answers are revealed as we see Wolverine continue down his new path.

The Good

Paul Cornell is filling in some of the gaps we’ve been waiting for as the story switches back and forth between the present and past. It’s still an odd feeling seeing Logan in this slightly reduced state but it is giving us to see him forced to evolve a bit. In some ways, you could say having a healing factor has been a bit of a crutch for him as he never really had to worry about his mortality.

As the story moves forward, jumping back to the time when Logan fully makes his decision has been interesting. We’re still not necessarily 100% certain how every detail played out but we’re getting closer and one of the possibility is intriguing. Rather than simply spill all the beans, Cornell does throw in some twists and dodges to make us continue reading to find out what all the answers are.

Ryan Stegman’s art is, as usual, great to see. He gets to draw several characters including different members of the X-Men. With Wolverine being in a more vulnerable state, Stegman manages to capture the changes Logan is going through. You can see him changing and it almost feels like you can see him getting a little older as well. With each issue I find my self anticipating what new detail Stegman is going to add.

The Bad

My main problem is the story bringing us towards another confrontation with Sabretooth. He was such a huge part of the previous volume and it would be nice to get a break from him. We do find out more of what Creed is up to and it might just be a matter of wait and see but I’m not completely sold on his new motives.

This might be a minor thing. The origin of Wolverine’s new suit is a bit unexpected. It’s seems a little odd as well but it could open up new avenues for the storytelling. This is another wait and see or it could be something just not really mentioned again.

The Verdict

We’re in the midst of a different sort of Wolverine story. We’ve been seeing a lot of the same thing over the years and Cornell’s take is making Wolverine and readers accept and adapt to the changes. Ryan Stegman is a great fit for handling this rugged and more vulnerable Wolverine. It’s always a treat getting to see him draw different characters. If you think you’ve seen everything a Wolverine comic has to offer, it’s time you check again.

Am I the only one who thinks the last three issues of Wolverine barely deserve one star out of five? The only thing that's still "Wolverine" about this is that he's sleeping with the first attractive female he came across, seemingly with no development or real emotional investment. He's gone to screaming at pain, screaming while falling, and being paralyzed by fear. What?! And Jesus H. Christ - how did they get away with drawing the wrong Silver Samurai? The quality of this book is definitely not something one would expect for an A-list character.

There is also absolutely nothing revolutionary about the story so far. To be fair, part of that is because pretty much everything that could be done with Wolverine already has been - but the fact that they bill it as something new and unexpected is just a flat out lie. Dealing with losing his healing factor seems like a plot point that's been used and reused multiple times, and the only thing that's at all surprising over the course of the last three issues was finding out where he got his suit. Even that development seems like it was tacked on for fanservice/shock value and is inconsequential in the grand scheme of things.

And still, despite the supposed web of intrigue being weaved by Cornell, the biggest question I have is why they made such a big deal over rescuing a single Hand ninja in the first issue, when a hundred Hand ninjas barely equate to one capable warrior to begin with.

No. You're absolutely not wrong. The past year or two of stories, in fact, (in his regular title) have been mediocre at best. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't mind a time seeing Wolverine without his healing factor, reeling from its loss to an extent even, then reinventing himself through his martial skills and maybe some supplementary gear / armor. I'm good with that. Many cool developments could come from it in fact. One would have been seeing him really, and truly, use his martial skills consistently and thereby adding a refreshing and long anticipated intelligence to his character development.

What sucks is the lack luster story telling, the complete, and I mean complete, non adherence to nearly every aspect of Wolverine's ethos or established character development over the decades. It's like we're reading about a completely different, and entirely uninteresting, character altogether.

The plot and direction are weak. Had the story at least been interesting and sound, it might have garnered a little forgiveness. But not even. Thoroughly disgruntled fan right here.

multiple inkers didn't help either; the art suffered as a result, compared to the last two issues

I'm not sure what's going on with his powers to the full extent, but... Wolverine has always felt pain right? I mean, I was under the impression that every time he used his blades or got injured, he still felt it. Was I wrong? I say this because he makes a lot of noises when he gets hurt now, like yelling "yaaaargh" in the middle of sentence when extending his blades.

Aside from that, I think I should read the previous volume of Cornell's run (that doesn't sound silly at all...) because I'm rattled at how much of a p-word Wolverine is now...

Yeah, you're right. He was always feeling pain even with the healing factor. Extreme amounts of pain to be exact. It was so severe he would have phantom pains for months from injuries he healed through.

@sparty_dbq: Oh, good God. Wolverine's new suit was designed by.... him?!

Did I miss something? I just got into the new Wolverine series that came out. But how can you tell that Wolverine designed the suit himself? All the notes reads is "from a friend".

@sparty_dbq: It makes sense in some ways. He didn't want help from Beast or the X-Men. But it seems weird that he would find it in his heart to help him. Maybe his heart grew three sizes that day or something.
