The Good
Paul Cornell is filling in some of the gaps we’ve been waiting for as the story switches back and forth between the present and past. It’s still an odd feeling seeing Logan in this slightly reduced state but it is giving us to see him forced to evolve a bit. In some ways, you could say having a healing factor has been a bit of a crutch for him as he never really had to worry about his mortality.
As the story moves forward, jumping back to the time when Logan fully makes his decision has been interesting. We’re still not necessarily 100% certain how every detail played out but we’re getting closer and one of the possibility is intriguing. Rather than simply spill all the beans, Cornell does throw in some twists and dodges to make us continue reading to find out what all the answers are.
Ryan Stegman’s art is, as usual, great to see. He gets to draw several characters including different members of the X-Men. With Wolverine being in a more vulnerable state, Stegman manages to capture the changes Logan is going through. You can see him changing and it almost feels like you can see him getting a little older as well. With each issue I find my self anticipating what new detail Stegman is going to add.
The Bad
My main problem is the story bringing us towards another confrontation with Sabretooth. He was such a huge part of the previous volume and it would be nice to get a break from him. We do find out more of what Creed is up to and it might just be a matter of wait and see but I’m not completely sold on his new motives.
This might be a minor thing. The origin of Wolverine’s new suit is a bit unexpected. It’s seems a little odd as well but it could open up new avenues for the storytelling. This is another wait and see or it could be something just not really mentioned again.
The Verdict
We’re in the midst of a different sort of Wolverine story. We’ve been seeing a lot of the same thing over the years and Cornell’s take is making Wolverine and readers accept and adapt to the changes. Ryan Stegman is a great fit for handling this rugged and more vulnerable Wolverine. It’s always a treat getting to see him draw different characters. If you think you’ve seen everything a Wolverine comic has to offer, it’s time you check again.
