Uncanny X-Force #28 - Days of Preemptive Future

5

The latest issue of X-FORCE proves that sometimes the only way to change your destiny is to sacrifice yourself.

Warning: Some spoilers below.

The Good

As much as I absolutely hated the end result of this issue, I can't say that it wasn't expected or that it was not appropriate. Sometimes things happen that as a fan, I really don't like (i.e. Fantomex being killed), but even though I may not like something, does not mean it doesn't in some way help advance the story. That's something I can respect and that's definitely something that happens here.

If you have not been reading UNCANNY X-FORCE then you may not want to start reading this series with this issue. There is a lot going on (more than one ongoing story) and the characters time travel, making things even more complicated. Having said that, it's really pretty brilliant and equally as good as previous issues.

I really think that the death of Jean Phillippe is effecting Psylocke in a really serious way, and I think that she did have feelings for him and that these feelings are coming to light now that he is dead. The issue definitely comes full circle (at least for Psylocke) who thinks of him both at the very start of the book, and thinks of him in the final moments of her life. There is definitely a deep seeded feelings there for him that go beyond the fact that he sacrificed his own life so that she may survive -- I think she loves him. It's interesting that in her final moments, her thoughts went to Fantomex rather than to Warre, too. I definitely was not expecting that.

I think the most interesting thing about this future X-Force team is the way that Remender uses their kill philosophy and integrates it into a future story. How can their philosophy go completely wrong? We see what happens when you take the mission behind X-Force and the team and apply it to a worst case scenerio; and you get something really, really bad. A future that is totalitarian. It feels like a logical end, however, which is what makes this so interesting.

I also really loved the art in this comic by Julian Totino Tedesco. I think the use of the dark colors was really appropriate and helped set the tone and mood of the scene and the book.

The Bad

Oh, you mean aside from the fact that Rick Remender killed off my two favorite characters in this series in just two issues? No, there's nothing wrong. I do hope that Ultimaton and Gateway will be justified and that Remender references these characters in some way in future books.

The Verdict

As much as what's happened in this issue pains me, I can't deny that it wasn't a great comic book story. It's very dark and grim, and you feel for these characters; something I think is very important when you're dealing with a character death. The pacing in this issue is just fantastic. Nothing feels like it happens too quickly, and everything feels like it happens for a reason (except maybe Gateway's death, but that remains to be seen). I think this is definitely a powerful issue that has the ability to re-evaluate the motives and purpose behind an X-Force team, and whether something like this is necessary. Dealing with the worst case, future scenario is always interesting, and it definitely worked here. I am so looking forward to the next issue of UNCANNY X-FORCE.

The ending was such a cliffhanger.

I want to believe future Betsy finds her past self before she bleeds out(using some nifty comic book logic that she could telepathically know and get there that quickly).

So... Remender seemingly killed off another character to advance the story, right?

HOW SURPRISING!!!

I know that killing is a big part of this great series (and also of the other series he's writing) but this is seriously getting old. Some writers bring characters back from the dead like it's nothing whereas Remender is doing the exact opposite which is equally annoying.

While Fantomex's death seemed a little off, as in he might come back before the story is over one way or another, I gotta say Psylocke's was as amazing as it was unexpected a real emotional high, or low in this case. Great Job Rick Remender!!

I haven't read the issue yet, but from what I'm reading here and finding out there's a future X-Force team, I REALLY, REALLY hope that Remender doesn't kill off our Betsy and replace her with future Betsy. Such a bloody cop out if he does in a way to skip all the pain and suffering Psylocke has been going through. Plus, it won't be the Betsy that we've all grown to love for 35 years. I hope this doesn't happen.

I still wonder if Fantomex is dead-dead, or just mostly dead. He's still in the team credits page, and I don't remember when others who've left the team previously officially left that page. But moreso than that is right now we're dealing with time travel. The conflict in the future could be resolved and when they're sent back home they may end up hopping back to before they left. It's certainly an out if Remender wanted it.

I have a love/hate relationship with Remender. He's a great writer, but he has this nasty habit of killing off characters I love.

Psylocke and Fanotmex are dead? That's a bit cavalier killing two characters in two issues. I'd say that's very Bendis of him.

Holy cow these last few issues have been playing out like Breaking Bad. It feels as if any one issue could be the last. Regardless of the deaths of fan favorite characters this has been an exciting ride. I dare you to find another mainstream superhero title that fits this much suspense and drama into a single issue.

I have enjoyed every artist on this volume of UXF thus far. Tedesco was great even after I felt super spoiled by having Phil Noto for as long as we did. It amazes me this book doesn't get the love that Daredevil is getting in terms of awards and critical acclaim. Remember and co are writing something horribly depressing and heart breaking but undeniably good at every step of the way.

Also, super-okay-with-facist-murdering-Minority-Report-Society-Wolverine makes me laugh all the way to the bank. This is the guy beat up and left Cyclops for allowing a "child soldier" to save people but is totally okay with pre-murdering people who think about murder? The existence of UXF makes Schism seem even more pointless than AvX has made it for me. Others might not feel that way and thats cool. JM2C.

Comics would be so boring if everyone lived.

Somehow Remender brought back the fear of death. At least, in his books.

Agreed.

I just think that killing off characters is something that shouldn't happen too often. It's a decision that should be made carefully because it can be quite annoying when a lot of characters you care about die.

@x_29: Remember that Fantomex was revealed on the cover of #28 before he was killed in #27 and EVA took his place on the cover. Anything can happen now.

Good point. Then again if she is dead here, why is she alive in AVX? Comics are weird.

Holy crap when did Deathlok join the X-force team!?! I was reading Wolverine and the X-Men and he appears to give a "future" history lesson to the kids. When I saw him on the front cover this definitely been missing out on x-force. This and X-Factor, so hard to jump on because all the past arks are so incredibly good that you have to start at the beginning. Any idea on how to catch up?

^^this. thats exactly how i felt. im not even emotionally upset about fantomex, im just literally mad that i wont be seeing him anymore. hes so cool and now i dont get to read him in x-force :(

ALSO if youve read the story in wolverine weapon x about the deathlok, it makes him much cooler in this book. so cool to see that connection, i love it!

If he doesn't bring them both back I'm going to be angry. There's a slight chance some part of F's death was a misdirection--maybe Mystique felt something for him and didn't really poison him, or she comes along and gives him an antidote--I'll admit having your heart cut out is pretty serious, but Wolverine once had his spine ripped out. Also F might have uploaded his minds to EVA or some other receptacle.

At least maybe EVA will be pretty cool. I enjoy seeing some of the future of the old Here Comes Tomorrow storyline from New X-Men coming to pass, though the Phoenix Force has come back to Earth like 146 years ahead of schedule.

Psylocke plays s crucial role in Brain Wood's "X-Men" book. Since that book is ignoring all recent events in the other X-books, will it also ignore Psylocks' death?

@redwingx: Actually, I used to love his work, especially the first twelve issues of Venom and The Dark Angel Saga. It's just that his habit of killing off every character I care about has become really annoying.

@redwingx: Fair enough, he made Flash, Psylocke and Fantomex a lot more popular than they were before. I'm just not a fan of seeing great characters being killed off every couple of months knowing that they might never come back but to each his own I guess.
