Uncanny X-Force #16 - No Such Thing

4

The world is on the brink of extermination and it's up to X-Force to undo what Archangel has done, but will they fail?

The world as X-Force knows it hangs on the brink of extinction. With Psylocke behind bars and Wolverine out of commission, will Deathlok, Fantomex and Deadpool defeat Archangel's cronies before Genocide begins his extermination?

The Good

The Jerome Opena and Rick Remender creative team continues to impress even sixteen issues into the ongoing series. The art is beautiful and matches the story perfectly. The 16th issue of Uncanny X-Force picks up where we last left off; the team, and the team happens to presently be at an extreme disadvantage. After realizing that Psylocke would not acquiesce to Archangel's demands peacefully, the new Apocalypse places her behind bars. Now, with Wolverine temporarily out of commission, it's up to Fantomex to lead Deathlok and Deadpool to fix the mess. Trouble is, Fantomex has never been one for leading anyone; so will he give up on the team and abandon the situation at the worst possible moment?

If I could sum up this issue in two words it would be: action packed. Each and every scene is hard hitting action that absolutely does not quit. Seeing Fantomex take on a leadership role in the previous issue as well as this one is interesting, but you know it's likely not to last. Up until now there's been a part of me that questiond whether Archangel had really fully succumbed to Apocalypse, and the question of whether there is any trace of Warren influencing Archangel is answered here, in this issue. The most interesting scene is the exchange of dialogue between Archangel and Psyocke where Archangel indicates that none of "this" would have been possible without X-Force.

The final pages of the issue will shock you.

The Bad

The fight between Psylocke and Archangel is incredibly short lived, and I felt that it took her a really long time to come to terms with the fact that Warren is Archangel now, and that any trace of his former self are virtually gone. She's still so hopeful; but it's hard to tell whether this is weakness, willing ignorance, or hope. I would have liked her put up a fight against him, oh well.

The Verdict

Fantomex's subconscious is telling him to flee because that's what he's used to doing, but something tells me that he'll go back because it's the right thing to do. The fact that he acknowledges that his love for Psylocke is "unrequited" is funny too. As sad as it is, it's nice to finally see him admit it to himself out loud. I think Fantomex 16 issues ago would have left and never hesitated; but his character (since Remender has had his way with him) has evolved so much, and it's fantastic to see the evolution of his character play out in the story. The story is definitely not new reader friendly, and I recommend picking up the previous 15 issues or at least start at issue #11 where the arc began to fully understand. We are at the height of X-Force's excitement, and it still feels like things are just heating up and we are nowhere near the end. Personally, I can't wait for the next issue!

It saddens me to see you give the latest two issues 4 stars Babs; this is 5 star material! I understood your concerns of Psylocke's passive nature in the previous issue though and will reserve judgement of her character in #16 until I pick it up tomorrow. However it doesn't change the fact that this is Psylocke at her very best in at least the past decade!

Remender keeps knocking me back after every issue. Especially the big reveal at the end of #15 and I can't wait to see how it plays out in this issue.

Best marvel book hands down nothing even comes close. Rick Remender continues to write one of the few books that both character and story driven. Marvel needs to wake up and realize what a talent he is and give him what ever he wants. I am very excited about Jason Aaron on Wolverine and the X-men, but I would take Remender on that title over him any day of the week. If Rick Remender Wrote a Squril Girl goes to the Savage Land ongoing with her boyfriend Toad it would still be the best Marvel book. Many of you are thinking wow this guy is just some Remender fanboy who thinks he knows everything. Well I do not know everything, but what I do know is that Rick Remender is the best Marvel has right now( and I am not saying marvel does not have any talent, because they do). So please Marvel give Remender more books.

Great review for an awesome issue! I also felt that the confrontation between Psylocke and Archangel would have been more monumental especially after all the build-up Remender has established since this series began. I thought this was also some clever ploy on Psylocke's part but now I don't really know. I am confident that what lies ahead will still be amazing and surprise me nonetheless. I had to refresh my memory and look up certain characters who appeared in this issue since my memory of the Age of Apocalypse universe is a little rusty. My thoughts on Deadpool have changed with Remender's portrayal of that character especially in this issue. I never really liked him but his snappy dialogue and thoughts in this issue alone are really making him shine. Upon reading the cover, I could not believe that this is already part 6 of this storyline. Sometimes it seems like it has passed so quickly; other times it feels like forever waiting for the next issue to arrive.

Love this book. Man seeing Blob deflate and a kick ass AoA Iceman was the tip of the iceberg.

I was appalled by the quality of this book, but it has been exceptional every issue in. If I were to be forced to sell all of my comics, this is a series I would never be able to part with. It has been the best books I have ever bought. Remender is awesome!

The AoA Iceman panels did it for me in this issue. Really well planned and executed in terms of action and art. BOOM!

I can't wait to pick this up later today. I myself am also very excited to see Fantomex growing as a character. I feel Remeder has given him more depth than he previously has had.

Being such a great series anything not absouletly breathtaking is kind of seen as underpar when for most other stories it would be considered steller.

Whoa. A lot went down in this one. I've been loving this series more than any X-book in years.

A buddy of mine has just started collecting individual issues again with the New 52, and everytime we go to the store I tell him he should pick up Uncanny X-Force. I tell him, if I can guarantee his money is well spent on any one book, its this one... He's breaking down, he'll be picking it up soon enough.

Really action-intense issue with some pay-offs of some plants that Remender has been seeding (what an appropriate word choice). Great call-back involving Deathlok too..

I LOVED the battle against Iceman.

It showed us Drake's potential (now he can even protect against telepathy or at least misdirection by hiding his conscience on the ice forming him, becoming a true elemental) and still he had the joking personality (he really sounded like Spiderman on his series when he started with the dead in a pool jokes).

The fight with Psylocke and Archangel could've been longer but the overal action is great . Looking forward to issue 18. Remender is amazing.

THE GOOD: The art is top notch again. You just know it wont last and just hope that Marvel brings on a good, dark artist like Opena. The acton is top quality and the writing is good. This comic book leaves you so hungry for the next.

THE BAD: Cliches. Wolverine's absence leaves open the cliche-Wolverine comback. Also, if you make all of your good guys bad lord knows that they are not going to be killed so...

I disagree. He should just simply focus on writing Uncanny X-Force and Venom, because those two are amazing. I'm afraid with Secret Avengers coming into the Remender fold, he might start dropping the ball on these two amazing titles he's given us so far.

@ShirEPanjshir: He will be fine, in past interviews he has said that starting on the book is the hardest part, once he has them ploted out he said its not that bad and in an interview a couple months back he said he had UXF ploted to the mid 30's and Venom in the 20's.

@ccolemmole: Famine played his drums which led to blob deflating. All that's left was a pile of blob skin (ughhhhhh).

Rick Remender has made Deadpool and Fantomex enjoyable to read. That alone will keep me as a fan of his for years to come.

@Pbott: Thank you for restoring my faith again. I'm sure Remender will be able to handle his current titles. Lets just hope that Marvel doesn't try to push him into even more titles because of quantity vs quality. But anyway, Remender's awesome, he'll be able to handle his current titles fine, just like you said.
