Uncanny X-Force #15 - Tabula Rasa

4

Archangel's plans for the world are beginning to come together in this issue of X-Force and the full effects of the light seeds become clear; but how does this issue measure up to the previous ones?

Issue #14 of Uncanny X-Force left us with very little hope for the team. With Wolverine out of commission and Psylocke imprisoned at Akkaba Metropolis, beneath the North Pole there seemed to be very little hope left for X-Force.

The Good

Fantomex isn't a bad leader, he just doesn't want to admit that he has to be one in this issue. Half the team is down and out and it's up to Fantomex, Deadpool and Deathlok to save the world and prevent Archangel from planting more light seeds and wiping out human kind. The thing that I have really enjoyed about this series is the pacing. Things don't come about immediately; rather there is a gradual progression that is taking place. This issue is the fifth issue of the 'Dark Angel Saga' and we are only now discovering the means of how Archangel plans to change the world using the light seeds. Once again, Jerome Opena's art is absolutely stunning. His attention to detail and ability to capture the expressions and emotions of the characters is breathtaking. Remender has constructed a rather complicated story and is unravelling it at just the right pace. Archangel's plans for both the world and "evolution" as well as the role Betsy will play become clear here, making this an essential issue for Uncanny X-Force readers.

The Bad

Within the first few panels the characterization of Betsy seemed forced. The dialogue does not feel genuine, and the things she says seem out of character. However, again, is my opinion. I find it hard to believe she would allow herself to be confined and served by a servant of Archangel as opposed to going after him following their confrontation in the previous issue, but again, that's my opinion.

The Verdict

Things are getting more and more interesting and this issue is guaranteed to have you at the edge of your seat. My only qualm was the characterization of Psylocke, which I mentioned above. Other than that, the story is really, really good. I do not recommend this issue for new readers; if you want to get into X-Force I suggest at least starting the story at the beginning of the story arc.

This was such a good issue of X-Force! I loved the spotlight that Remender gave to Deathlok in this issue.

Great review Sara. All good points especially about the issue not being a great starting point for new readers (but I feel that way with X-Men titles in general). A lot of great releases this week but this one was the one I was really excited about. I agree with your observations on Psylocke thus far but this could be some kind of plan she has (maybe, maybe not) to be behind enemy lines. I love Opena's meticulous artwork in this story arc which is a great reminder of the work he did on the first four issues of this series (and another major Apocalypse story arc). I was not too familiar with Deathlok before his introduction to this series but he really impressed me with his actions in dealing with the enemy especially later on (stunned me).

@entee: I agree! I thought that Deathlok's piece was so good! The torture bit really kind of made Deathlok fit in with X-Force...if you know what I mean?

Really loved the ending. I guess it was expected halfway through the issue, but now I can't wait for the next issue

I read the Psylocke stuff as her biding her time, waiting for the right moment to strike. Nothing too out of character.

The fact that Deathlok let his host have control to go all bad ass on Death was awesome as hell. I really hope that once this is over he becomes a real team member.

There was some good Fantomex and Deadpool dialogue in this issue. Ever sense Fantomex killed kid Apocalypse there's been a lot of subtle hints at their tensions. I really hope that them working together so much in this arch finally brings their relationship to a climax.

@caladbolglight:The way Deathlok was portrayed here was super X-Force. Hopefully if Wolverine doesn't have time for X-Force after Schism, Deathlok could become a full member on the team, switching from AI and psychopath whenever the occasion calls for it.

I agree, it felt like Psylocke was just bideing her time at the begining. I love the relationship between Archangel and McCoy. Deathlok was awesome in this issue. I wish this book came out every week because I can't wait to see what happens next!

If Deathlok keeps this up he could become on of my favorites.... Maybe he and The Punisher could hang out sometime...

Actually, I think I'm enjoying the Trio of Fantomex, Deadpool, and Deathlok. I think a series with the trio off on a long misadventure is in order.

Loved, loved this issue.

I'm going to miss Jerome Opena's pencils (w/ Mark White colors), when this series gets 'Regenes-ized'.

In regards to Betsy's characterization, I also thought she was biding her time, since she has 'zero' support in Archangel's stronghold. Look at the way AoA Blob just took her out. Plus, did anyone else notice that Betsy wasn't [quite] sporting the leotard anymore? I dug the change in uni.

Lastly, did I just see Deadpool eat the eye off of that fruit? And by 'eye', I mean that literally; the thing was staring back at him.

Great appearance by Eddie from Iron Maiden in these issues... I mean Deathlok. I hope they bring him in the fold more often.

A really, really solid issue of Uncanny X-Force. This series has been amazing from the number one issue. This arc however seems to be the climax so far. I'm so happy that the focus is currently falling upon Fantomex, Deadpool and Deathlok. It gives for some interesting situations.
