Uncanny X-Force #1 - Let It Bleed

4

Uncanny X-Force returns with new creators and a brand new team.

The Good

There's no question about it, this first issue starts out with a serious bang. Lot's of action and butt kicking, so if that's what you are looking for then you will definitely be entertained. The style of writing, the way the story is structured and the characterizations of many of these characters feels completely different then what we were seeing in the previous X-FORCE series, so be prepared for some seriously huge surprises.

One of the first things that I really enjoyed about this issue was the interaction between Storm and Psylocke. These two characters really come into their own on the pages of this first issue and it's clear that writer Sam Humphries won't be neglecting to mention the recent developments in both of their lives. It becomes very clear early on that Humphries will be delving very early on into the way these characters have been feeling and how the events that transpired in both their lives will change them.

Admittedly, there are some things that feel really out of place and as if they do not make any sense at all. Once the issue concludes, however, things seem to come together and begin to line up in a significant way. You find yourself beginning to understand the specific actions that these characters have taken and why they changed.

The art in this issue is fantastic. The line work is clean, the colors are vibrant and really beautiful, and it matched the story really well. The art was really well done.

The Bad

Reading this issue, these characters feel like they are written a tiny bit forced. I don't know if I am believing the attitude change that certain characters have relayed, and that's part of the problem. Is it because they are starkly different from the way they were previously written, or is it because we don't have the whole story yet? Being that this issue is the first in the relaunch, it's hard to say. The story is interesting, but I don't know whether I am entirely convinced.

The Verdict

This is definitely a departure from the previous X-FORCE series by Rick Remender and it's clear that writer Sam Humphries is striving to make this series his own -- and I have to give him credit for that. And although all these changes are good and interesting, there are moments where things do feel a bit forced. It may be the newness of it all, but these feel like a group of characters that are totally unrecognizable. And, that may not necessarily be a bad thing. In the end, things do feel like they are starting to come together, even if they feel jarring initially.

I need to pick up this issue. By the sounds of the review, the book sounds promising. I need to check this out for myself.

@saoakden: It depends on the publisher and the comic. Like this week, we only got this and YOUNG AVENGERS early from Marvel.

@Dark_Guyver: Check out Uncanny X-Force #35 although it doesn't explain a whole lot about the new Fantomexes it at least will make some sense.

I'm really hoping they don't start up the Bishop/Cable feud again and have the different X-Force teams fighting each other.

going to be hard to follow what Remender did. Remenders Uncanny run is going to go down with so many classics. I know I haven't read a better X story since Claremont. Or at least X-Cutioners Song which was pretty much Claremonts plot

I'm undecided on getting this book, but I'm digging Psylocke's new costume. I've never really liked her 'swimsuit' costume.

What about Puck? Spiral?

As much as I love Storm and Psylocke, it would have been great to read about these two as well in the review.

What id it about Cable's X-force that people are not liking? there are some websites harshly critical and as well as many users on this site who bash it saying it is bad. I find it to be an 8/10 book.

Im just curious?

First order of business:

For Whys did they did this, when the first book was fine. They took out wolvering and deadpool, made fantomex a girl, got rid of angel, who is annoying but kind of cool, I mean FOR WHYS.

Second and most important: Will the guy Fantomex try to bang his girl self? hmmmmm, would you? dont say that you wouldnt! haha.

So I'm tempted to actually go pick up a physical copy of this, since Marvel's offering a free digital copy with purchase. Can anyone tell me whether I'll be able to read that digital version via the Comixology app?

I'll give this series one chance. If I like it, I'll continue, if not, it's gone. I keep adding more books to my pull list while trying to narrow it down at the same time... Damn Marvel NOW. Cable and X-Force is good. We'll see about this one.

@Xwraith: Thanks! I actually managed to get my hands on a couple Marvel codes today and was able to test it out. That's really quite a fantastic setup they've got going on. I'd love to see that done with more comics.

Shall be picking this up today!

I wasn't really wowed about the ending of this 1st issue. Rather repulsed, actually, since it crapped all over the picturesque ending of the first volume. Hoping beyond it all though that this picks up plot-wise....

They do that with all $3.99 issues, which I agree is kind of cool. All of these Marvel NOW! issues populate my iPad which is kind of nice. I just wish they did that with all issues, but for now, I'll take the current setup.

@Omertalvendetta: Yeah, I think they really need to adapt that across all books. And DC needs to do it, too.

I understand that there are nuances and business reasons for being cautious in their embrace of digital distribution, but frankly I'm more interested in buying a physical book if I can get the digital for free than I will ever be otherwise. I guess it just depends on how many people are like me, and would use the code to archive their own physical collection, as opposed to just give the code out to other people and therefore cut into sales.

The thing that has me concerned about this series is when I was listening to Sam Humphries on the other CV podcast. He talks about Storm shaving her head to make a mowhawk becasue she's divorced. I believe he said something along the lines of "Her life didn't got the way she thought it would. She's no longer a wife or a queen.". When has she ever put that much emphasis on that marriage? He's putting her character's identity on her relationship. So what if she's not a queen. To many others she's seen as a goddess. Queen is a step down.

That Skottie Young cover variant is pretty awesome.

This book left me unimpressed with its first showing. I feel like we've went from one really epic X-Force book to two sub-par showings, though this is the stronger of the two--if not by much. Really disappointed in Betsy's characterization most of all, it's almost singly the reason I'm turned off from it so far, but the Fantomex twist was amusing and so like him. I'll give it a few more issues, but if Sam Humpheries doesn't hand Betsy a bar of soap I'm out. =/
