Trinity of Sin #1 - The Wages of Sin, Part One: Nightfall

2

The Question, Phantom Stranger, and Pandora come together to fight evil

The Good

In TRINITY OF SIN, something is behind attacks on Pandora, The Question, and Phantom Stranger, but who is it and why are they doing this?

It is nice to see J.M. DeMatteis running things on this book. He's done a great job with his run on Phantom Stranger and really made that character one of the more fascinating ones of the New 52. Frankly, having these three characters in the same book makes sense, since they are the "Trinity of Sin." This is a book that many people have been waiting for.

The issue is very new reader friendly, which is a good and bad thing. Anyone can jump on, even if they have no idea who this cast of characters is. There's a bit of background and who these folks are and where they come from. New people picking this up should have an easy dip into this pool.

The Bad

The issue focus is not on plot. Towards the end of the issue, a story is dumped onto the reader, and it's pretty much "we have to come together to find out why there's bad guys after us." It's pretty dry and doesn't hook in the reader at all, even if the Trinity of Sin are high on your "rad characters" list.

As far as first issues go, there's no hook. The majority of this issue sets up who these characters are, but the thing is that people picking this series up are most likely going to be people who really enjoyed these characters in previous series. New readers won't really be jumping on, so a lot of the narration is simply redundant.

What we're left with is an underwhelming issue featuring some very cool characters, which DeMatteis has been working with for quite some time. He's done a lot of great crafting with Phantom Stranger and a little with Pandora in JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK. Expectations are a bit high because of this, and it simply doesn't live up to them.

The Verdict

Fans of these characters will be a bit let down because this issue feels like it reads solely for readers who have no clue who any of these characters are. That's the big disappointment since DeMatteis did such a good job with THE PHANTOM STRANGER. It almost feels like a lighter, carefree book presenting a very light plot to the reader. The art is middle-of-the-road and doesn't help nor hurt the book. While this issue really didn't like up to its potential, there's still a bit of hope on the horizon.

Ouch, hopefully I'll like this more, I'm really looking forward to reading this book. I was really sad when Phantom Stranger and Pandora were canceled, but now I can still read them for 1/2 the cost.

Also I love how Rad is becoming you catchphrase :)

another absolutley terrible review by THE worst comic "reviwer" on this site. People don't listen to this mad man. This guy takes stars away from books for reasons not deserved. You consistantly do this and deter poential fans of a book! Uninformed people like captainmarvel4ever up there will take your word for it, even tho you ever wed prove to not listen to your "reviews".

@starbrand1: I thought it was a good review since it pointed out some concerns I had with the book, and just because he gave it 2 stars doesn't mean I'm not going to try it. I'm interested in the characters and I'll be checking the series out, it's just an opinion chill out

While I quite like it, I am sorry to say that PS is really the only one of the characters I am really interested in following... thanks to DM's previous work.

Hi Starbrand. Since June, I have given 3 books less than three stars. 1 star is an "awful" book, which this is not. How is that me consistently deterring potential fans?

Did you by chance read the review? There's a lot of praise for DeMatteis as a storyteller and character builder, and there is potential here. My reviews are not to deter people from books. They are opinion. However, within modern storytelling, there are elements missing to make this a great story.

How about this for the future. Stop reading my reviews if they make you this angry. Take care.

Disappointing... I'll probably wait until more reviews for later in the series, it's rare to see less than 2 stars on CV.

@starbrand1: and that's your option but just because you like it doesn't mean you have to freak out at @inferioego: I saw some of the book online from a site that gives previews of the first issues of books and I was extremely disappointed as well I would've given it 1 or 2 stars.

This was borderline unreadable and a reminder of why I don't like most magic books. If anyone here's in the market for a magic-themed series, they should check out Klarion.

The one she launched last week was pretty well received, and honestly, I'd rather read a surprisingly good book by an author with a bad track record than force myself to read a terrible book because the author's track record is otherwise good.

Disappointed to see bad reviews of the book. I was kinda looking forward since the Question is involved. Which leads us to my next comment. Why the hell is DC throwing the Question with magic characters? Whose bright idea was it to take a cult character who was loved for his street level, paranoid, detective like character to throw him with a bunch of magical characters. Leave the Question alone! He doesn't deserve this!

You know, I've seen you say some pretty disrespectful things to me in reviews, numerous times because you don't agree with me. You need to learn to discuss things with people in a civil manner. Because of this, you're getting a warning. Keep it up and it will become a ban.

@davidgrantlloyd:

It's not about me disagreeing with you, your opinion is your opinion. But you CONSISTANTLY give GOOD books 1 or 2 star ratings, that DO NOT deserve that low of a score. There are people, unfortunatly, who trust this site. And those people might skip a book that they potentially may love, because you gave it 1 or two stars. You do not know how the 1-5 rating system works, clearly. your review doesnt seem that bad, then book 1 or 2 stars.

so if your threatining me with a ban, thats hillarious. Thats called a power trip, and a half. I take action because YOU do this in a regular basis, be fair with your scores, because you are not. You are the typical "fan", i stress the "" because your basically a giant sour puss. It's ok to not love something, that doesnt mean that it deserve to be crapped on by YOU.

This is is NO way shape or form a 2 star book, YOU are misleading people, and that does irritate me. If no one speaks out about how rediculous you are, then you will always do stuff like this. You need to learn how to write reviews, and score them appropriately, because you certainly do NOT.

To repeat myself, this is never about me disagreeing with your opinion, its about you unfairly giving books 1 or 2 star ratings which would mean that the book is terrible and almost unreadable.

I immensely enjoyed this issue!

I went in with pretty darn low expectations because neither of the previous ToS series were among my favorite series. (Though I really enjoyed the Phantom Stranger Futures End issue.)

I totally agree with @inferiorego that this issue's focus was not on plot, but I think that that's completely okay because it is the first issue and is just setting up the series. What I disagree with however his statement that there is no hook. While what happened, I admit, may not hook everyone, I became excited for what is to come next. What I believe may be being referred to is that the attempt at a cliffhanger was pretty lackluster. But I thought this issue set up potential for stories in future issues pretty well, which has me excited. Which brings me to the other thing that @inferiorego said that I disagree with which is that the majority of the issue was used to introduce the characters from the beginning as if they were completely new. From my point of view, we had a lengthy look at the Question, who hasn't really had that much exposure so far, and this look was in a new light. Then we got quick looks at where the other two member of the ToS picked up after their respective solo series were cancelled.

All in all, I would encourage people to check this out and form their own opinion. That is how I roll on everything. Some of you might agree with @inferiorego and some might agree with me and there will be many in between. What I think probably happened is that @inferiorego went into this book with too hihg of expectations. He said in the review that "expectations were pretty high" and I always find that that is a good way to ruin the enjoyment of something. I saw the movie "The Dark Knight" for the first time right before it left theaters after everyone telling me how good it was and ended up not enjoying it that much. And actually enjoying it more while watching it subsequent times. Also my expectations for Godhead were pretty darn high and I haven't really enjoyed it that much while it seems everyone else, a good bit of whom state that they had somewhat low expectations, are constantly raving about how good it is.

@starbrand1 Take notes! This is how you politely disagree with someone and encourage others to form their own opinion. There is no need to insult the staff on my favorite website. (or anyone else for that matter) Several of the things you said were just uncalled for!

@kilowog52: YOU DON'T LIKE GODHEAD?!?!?!?!?!

WE MUST FIGHT! ::end jokingness::

It's almost all subjective. There are moments in this issue that I still feel are flat-out bad storytelling, but regardless of the fact I didn't like the issue, there is potential here featuring three great characters. We'll see what next month brings.

I agree that its what the New 52 does A LOT. I can almost recite the first 7 text boxes of Superboys first like 10 issues cause it would almost literally say the SAME thing. They really try to be new reader friendly. With this issue though I didnt feel that they tried to do that so much. Maybe I feel that way cause I enjoyed that they did mention who they are and how they came about but in a different way using different words. Doing that usually gives us a better understanding of how things happened as well as gives us a few extra panels to gaze at. This issue was a bit slow, but I do feel like I came out of it learning just a tad more about the Question. Oh, and just for the record, I read all of Justice League Dark and Phantom Stranger, and about half of Pandora.
