Ultimates #3 - Outside

5

Now that the Ultimates have fixed Galactus, what's next for them?

In case you missed it, in issue #2, this new team of Ultimates turned Galactus into a life bringer. He's restored life to a dead planet and now off restoring balance to the universe. In issue #3, the team comes together to figure out their next mission. However, the Shi'ar Imperial Guard isn't too happy about what happened with Galactus.

Blue Marvel has decided that the universe has too many problems with time, with people travelling throughout it and rewriting history. Damage has been done to the universe but they don't know to what extent, so the Ultimates have to travel to outside the universe just to see how bad it is.

This issue is 95% setup and people sitting around talking, but it's done in such a way that it's one of the most exciting books of the week. THE ULTIMATES takes some of the more intelligent and higher concept elements from the Marvel Universe and makes it a bit more accessible to the everyday reader. I'm not saying anything is dumbed down in this issue, but writer Al Ewing does an exceptional job at explaining all these concepts in a way that really brings the reader into the world and at no point does the information feel like it's being dumped on the reader. It fits well within the story being presented.

The issue also really delivers more personality from each of the teammates. We're really getting to know who these characters are and what role they play on the team. Aside from Carol Danvers and Black Panther, this team is made up of B & C-List Marvel heroes. The team works well as a cohesive unit and we even get to see a cameo from the new Giant Man, Raz Malhotra. There's also the return of an arch-nemesis to look forward to as well.

Kenneth Rocafort and Dan Brown are doing some outstanding art on this book. Rocafort's page setups and panel placements are unique and give this book a look and design that fits the higher concept subjects this book delivers. On top of that, Rocafort's art is simply wonderful and his style is very fitting for these characters. Brown's colorwork is top notch and really fleshes out the book. I epsecially loved his colorwork on the borders of the panels as well.

THE ULTIMATES continues to be one of the best books in the post-SECRET WARS world, right next to VISION. Conceptually, this is a brilliant book and makes the team name "The Ultimates" mean something again. I cannot recommend this book enough.

He's restored life to a dead planet and now off restoring balance to the universe.

Except Galactus was ALREADY a part of balancing the universe.

I'm SO tired of this attitude that continuity gets in the way of storytelling. If you're not able to come up with imaginative, creative, and entertaining stories without shitting all over established character history you're in the wrong damn line of work.

So with the Imperial Guard being in this book is Glads mentioned? Since he was killed before Secret Wars.

Indeed. He was the Eater of Worlds because cosmic balanced NEEDED IT.

They really need to read Thanos and Deadpool's latest team-up. Where Eternity ( as the the universe we live in ) gets tricked into capturing Death so nobody can die in the universe....which causes un-imaginable pain but with no release of DEATH itself. And when Death was released and Thanos wanted to kill Eternity for the 'ultimate victory of Death' Deadpool step in, become the Captain Universe to fight AGAINST Lady Death...his lover. Because it is not about the ultimate victory...it is about the balance of it.

When you get that realization from a Deadpool book, how can you take these Ultimates and their ''Fixes'' seriously ? I mean , if anything, they are causing even bigger problems. Cosmic balance doesn't have to fit your moral spectrum, if it did, things would go wrong real fast.

Thats why the worst kind of Super-hero teams are the ones that think they know the best for the WHOLE UNIVERSE. I mean literally Shi'ar called them out on it in the issue '' How can you 'fix' Galactus without consulting others who will probably get affected most from it ? '' How is overpopulating the universe gonna solve problems ?

And now they are after fixing the Time-travel ? Yea that will work out great ! As if no-one in the past haven't tried that already. Or people like Cable who HUNTS people like the Ultimates for messing with Time itself will just be okay with it ?

People blame Illuminati for what they've done in the past and want them to be accountable... and yet what the Ultimates are doing is the same if not worse. They think they can decide whats best for the rest of the universe and literally mess with everything as they please ! Calling it a 'fix'. Where is their accountability ? How are they different than God Doom when he created his own Battleworld from what's left of the multiverse ? ''Oh but they are trying to do good , fixing thing ! '' Yea what is good or evil doesn't really apply to cosmic concepts like Time and Space. Mark my words, these actions will cause more problems than it solves.

After Squadron Supreme, Ultimates might be next on my 'hit' list. I am disappointed in Carol the most, to be honest, she should know better than messing with Time or Cosmic balance.

Finally, hopefully they fix the mess left over from AOU and at least address the constant "rule" breaking i.e. O5 X-men.

Of course if they fix time why will we need Guardians of Infinity around?

Right now this and SS are among my favorite marvel books.

Aside from deapool comic thing which I don't take seriously I have to agree on that.

Another things that bothers me is these people from a race that is generally thought of as backwater could even have an affect on Galactus. A problem that's been beyond higher and more advanced races in the universe.

It's just Marvel throwing more shit at the wall without a care.

This. Why do we need the Avengers, the Ultimates, Squadron Supreme and A-Force? I know they face different threats, but the first three had basically the same purpose in their original incarnations. It's like how the Justice Society made perfect sense on Earth 2, but after Crisis on Infinite Earths, they didn't have crystal clear purpose to exist independently of the Justice League.

I thought it was enjoyable and am looking forward to seeing how things go. I do think they need to deal with the team's arrogance in fixing cosmic problems without asking anyone else. I like how they are making the extent of Monica's powers so front and center. I'm not sure if I would call Monica and Blue Marvel B or C listers; maybe in terms of how well people know them, but certainly not in power or history.

I think it's pretty funny that we have a Captain Marvel (Danvers), a former Captain Marvel (Monica), and a Blue Marvel. Marvel it up! Also we've got Spectrum as Monica's new name, and Dr. Spectrum over in Squadron Supreme. Will she ever get a name that isn't shared by someone else?

No I didn't. Justice League ad Society united against certain threats in the post-Crisis universe, raising the question why they weren't always unified. I don't see a reason why these teams aren't united, or at least reconciled with each other.

Yes you did. "Original incarnations" clearly these are not the original incarnations and do not have the same goals, morals or even tones. Why are you trying to take away other people's options? If you don't like something don't read it but for everybody else that doesn't give a shit about the Avengers we now get a choice between high concept science adventure or morally grey first strike action.

Actually those examples are different because of the way they're portrayed. The intent might be to look at it that way with the Robins but it's not the intent to look at it that way with the Ulimates. Sure it's brought up but it's in a way to disregard it. Illuminati did a much better job at getting the point across and even then.

Still it's not so much complaining about the book as complaining about the portrayal of the heroes in the book which some would believe they should know better. Especially Black Panther who rejected the Illuminati the first time for this very reason. It was understandable I guess to go against that for the incursions because time was so dire but now it's not the same.

@dernman: It was brought up as foreshadowing, the team dismissed it for now but not the book itself nor for good. Also the whole point in being based in SHIELD headquarters and having full disclosure with the whole world everyday is to try and do what the Illuminati did but better.

How hard may be the concept of "this is a new universe, so maybe there are new rules"?...

Anyway, I'm a fan of most of the characters, the story so far is good, so go on!

The comic still feels like too much of an Authority rip off. The "Super-Flow" is obviously a ripoff of The Bleed.

As for new universe theory, if it's so new why does Galactus have history from millennia ago?

Well i still cant stand Carol's current design and Ms America or whatever looks awfully like some convenient plot device but in general this books has been pretty nice so far.

Love the book. Best out of marvel so far and glad others feel this way. I wrote somewhere that they make the JL look like a bunch of children.
