The Savage Hawkman #2 - Wings of Darkness

3

Will Morphicius devour Carter and all of the NTH metal? Prepare for an epic battle.

A new villain, Morphicius, takes on Hawkman to devour all of the NTH metal. Is Carter able to control the metal and who is Morphicius working for?

The Good

Loving Morphicius. He's creepy, mysterious, and even better, tough as nails. This is going to be a real tough opponent for Carter, especially after Morphicius seemingly teams up with someone tougher than him in this issue. He wants Carter's NTH metal and wants to control it. It's a pretty cool reason to beat down on the good guy, since so many villains just want revenge. We also get to see another cool villain in this issue, Dr. Kane, who has what sounds like a more sinister plan in mind.

I've never really been a huge Philip Tan fan before, but I love his art during the action scenes in this book. Even though what's happening on the page is complete chaos, his art is soft and calming, or maybe I love his art in this book because of how he draws fire.

The Bad

I really don't care about Carter's home life or his relationship with Emma. I know it's a nice balance to the book, but I want to know more about Hawkman and the NTH metal. Is Hawkman still connected to his ancient Egyptian roots?

As you may have guessed, just like in the first issue, the NTH metal stuff isn't explained, and I feel like this character and his powers are going to be a bit frustrating for new readers.

The Verdict

It's a down the middle book. Not bad by any means, but not my favorite. I love the new villains in this issue, and their motives are pretty cool and not the same old "I have to beat the good guy" slant we've dealt with forever. I really liked Philip Tan's art on this book, especially the fire. However, I'm not too interested in Carter's home life, but that's mainly because I am so much more interested in Hawkman and his mythos.

It's still keeping Hawkman, the character, his past, his origins, his powers, mysterious!

Reserving judgment on the books until I get a better feel of the story. Still, I'm all for the
incorporating the Nth metal into Hawkman thing. Makes the character alot more enjoyable to me for him to be ready to fight instantly.
