Mighty Thor #6 - The Strongest Viking There Is Part One

4

Loki shows why it's important to pray before battle.

Loki tells the tale of Bodolf the Black, a Viking who prayed to Thor, who joined him in battle. One day, Bodolf didn't pray to Thor, but Bodolf's enemies did. Bodolf turns to pray for power, which leads him to Loki.

Jane Foster as Thor has been a very polarizing story. You either hate it or love it. However, many people on both sides of the spectrum do want to see Odinson as Thor, at least for a few moments, and this issue really fulfills that desire. We get to go back in time to 896 A.D. to the shores of the Skagerrak. The issue deals with Viking war and how the Norse Gods interacted with those in Midgard. The story itself is a ton of fun, and while it is a fill-in issue, that feeling passes quickly as the story is incredibly engaging.

The story of Bodolf is told through the eyes of Loki. Naturally, because of this, we're getting two different art styles. Russell Dauterman and colorist Matthew Wilson worked on the opening two pages, while Rafa Garres did the art for the rest of the book. Garres' art style is very different and feels more like a painting than traditional comic art. At times, there are some oddly shaped faces, but that's what I fell in love with. There's this chaos within the art which completely fits the piece. It feels less like a comic and more of a string of period art, telling the reader the story.

The biggest downer, for fans of the series, is that this is a fill-in issue, let alone a two-part fill-in. Everything that has is going on with Jane Foster will have to wait, but on the bright side, we're getting a new story and not a tie-in with the current Marvel event, Standoff, so there's a payoff as well.

MIGHTY THOR #6 takes some time to tell a story from the past, and it's a solid issue. In fact, the fact this is going to be at least a two-part story is pretty exciting. We get more insight into how the gods were involved during Viking times, and as expected, Loki was still a snake in the grass. The art style is different, but it really works well. This issue was a surprising amount of fun.

Makes sense to focus on Loki and the Odinson - Jane can't be in two places at once and the present day scenes in this probably take place at the same time as Standoff, which would explain her non-involvement. This week's other titles affected by Standoff, Captain America is a direct tie-in, while Nova clearly takes place beforehand (as it ends an arc that's been going on for half a dozen issues).

Nah, the real Thor wasn't in this comic at all, only Loki and Odinson. This issue is pretty boring, too much information dump with no real progress.

Well, Jason Aaron using any type of Hulk can only lead to harming both the Hulk and the Thor name.

I just want them to return Odinson to his rightful place as Thor. Having Jane as Thor goes against so much previously established Thor canon. When Mjolnir was broken it was bonded to Thor's life force so it would only obey him. What happened to that?

Nah, too much useless stuffs, the entire books could have been narrate in 2 pages and focus on developing the story. I honestly could give a crap about something happened to Odinson in the past, they should just focus on the real Thor.

It's sad when you have to keep convincing yourself that. Thor is selling really well, they're not gonna replace the real Thor with Odinson anytime soon. :)

I would laugh if they replace Thor on films as well, I could just see the look on your face.

Considering how Marvel cure Superheroes deaths every year, I don't see why cancer is an exception. This is not an election, this is simply business so of course they want to make money, Jane is selling really well, they won't replace her because people like Jane as Thor. A few people complain about it online don't change the sale number.

The sales are slightly down, it happens to almost every series as the book accumulated more issues, some may lose interests or pick up some other books. It has nothing to do with people disliking Jane. A few whiners on the internet don't speak for everyone who buys a Thor book.

Some people find in Aaron's current creative decisions on Thor a way to try to provoke Thor/Asgard fan base, most of them don't actually care for the story and everything else, its just the nature of this site and how some users view their preferences and what is perceived as threat to that same preferences, in the end this people can't understand that this comic was designed to bring new audiences to the franchise that also includes other comics like JIM, The Fearless, Loki and more recently Angela, but here was where marvel failed completely their goal, most of Thor/Asgard established readers rejected this creative decisions to a point where all the mentioned spins were cancelled including Angela new comic, comic book sales are a lot more than just a number from one specific comic, and this huge Pr comic never even sold like JMS run and currently is basically on par with TgoT (that was coming from the poor Fraction take on Thor and never had the now popular Loki in the narrative) the people that still read this comic clearly don't have interest in other comics since for example the Avengers (fits Thordis) new comic sales are just bad. This specific comic (changes) had main stream attention/rejection, but marvel pressed the ideology button (and keeps doing it) and for that still has some appeal that is not based on the catastrophic execution or narrative, and that makes it very fragile beyond the Ragnarok movie where all this creative decisions will have to revert back! I think Sam is still is Cap with Steve's return (just in time for his movie) but again with Aaron current execution that will not happen with Jane, because she is just the hammer's host... Without it she is just Jane... And what i said also makes almost impossible to translate to live action, (sentient Mjolnir?) at least with the current Mcu/Marvel Studios credibility/brand...

If marvel comics doesn't want to lose most of the established Thor/Asgard readership definitely and make the franchise grow again with Asgardian content in the spins (Loki for President is not Asgardian at all), they will have to announce something for at least the next November regarding Thor and Aaron will not be able to sell the comic at least by himself... From at least November of 2016 to November of 2017 you will see Marvel pander Thor/Asgard fan base like never before, i will not read any of it but by November 2017 (Ragnarok movie) the vibe has to be completely different, its not a question of if, its just how powerful the movie medium is, and how it needs the comic book fans happy and creating hype in the social media regarding their fav. characters movies...

Wait... You didn't know that the All New All different Marvel is a total flop? With several comics near cancellation and some already canceled? Yet you give the impression you know about comic book sales?

Bad means lose almost half of the readership from the last relaunch! The Justice League numbers are irrelevant... We are speaking of Marvel two last relaunches! Without a total reboot Marvel comics will not be able to appeal again to all this lost readers...

There are so many Avengers titles out nowadays. It's a new relaunch people checking out the changes. There are also many other titles to compete with it. You can't really prove that if they have kept it the same way, they would have higher readership. I don't read Avengers because I hate Sam Wilson and Miss Marvel. I'm not sure why an ensemble book fail has to be because of Thor.

Nope Avengers have the same titles from 2012 (Marvel now) here are some other numbers from the other Avengers titles...

Marvel Now New Avengers 7 $3.99 Marvel 60,138

All New All Different New Avengers 7 $3.99 Marvel 18,520

Marvel Now Uncanny Avengers 5 $3.99 Marvel 84,382

All New All Different Uncanny Avengers 5 $3.99 Marvel 43,618

Weren't you claiming (in past posts) that Thordis potential is huge (even translate for live action and replace Thor, lol), Batman and Spider-Man are the biggest comic book franchises because the readership is so big that can support several titles at the same time, and Thordis appeal is very limited, is that simple ... besides use everything build by other character her appeal is mixed regarding casual readers and terrible regarding Asgardian readers, like i said in the other post every single other Asgardian comic was cancelled since that whisper, she has new readers but is galaxies away from Thor's potential, because the old readers dislike everything about the creative decisions around her, did you ever check JMS/Thor sales? If Thor was relaunched without Aaron and his current creative decisions it would have incredible sales, because The All New All different is just a disguised way for marvel create Hype for the Mcu most popular characters return, diversity was just a pr/excuse, the problem is that Aaron is also Star Wars writer and will not be easy for marvel push him away from Thor's title, and Aaron is naive enough to think he still can appeal to Thor/Asgard fan base, he just can't because he basically destroyed Asgard... Either Way most of the last decisions by marvel editorial have big risks for the future, maybe Image Comics Publisher, Eric Stephenson, can make you understand why in the end, scenarios like the All New All Different stuff is actually hurting the comics industry! link

He went on to explain that this is short-term thinking and won't help the industry, as a whole, down the road. He continues with the idea that everyone is doomed to repeat history unless change happens and soon.

We've gone back to gimmicks, to variant covers and relaunches and reboots and more of the same old stunts disguised as events, when really all our readers want are good stories.

We're giving them great jumping on points over and over again, but it's becoming so commonplace our audience instead sees them as opportunities to cut and run. We are misinterpreting sales spikes for long-term success, and worst of all, we are spending so much time looking at how to keep going that we've lost sight of where we were heading in the first place.

Where did I claim Thor's potential is huge? I said it would be funny if she replaced Odinson and see how many people cry over it. At the moment, Marvel is trying to reach out to new readers because the white male readers may already reach the plateau point, and it may just stagnate or go down from here, by reaching out to different audience, it may increase sales and bring in new demographic into comics, the same way video games have more female gamers now than ever due to video games industry catering more to them. It's a self fulfilling prophecy to cater to the same group because they believe they're the only ones buying, but then, they're the only ones buying because they're the only ones being catered to.

You keep saying that this creative decisions will never revert back in any scenario, but what will you think if Jane dies in the comics and right in the beginning of the Ragnarok movie (without Marvel Studios even need of Natalie Portman)? Better what do you think the people that will potentially cry will think/act in my described scenario?

At the moment, Marvel is trying to reach out to new readers because the white male readers may already reach the plateau point, and it may just stagnate or go down from here, by reaching out to different audience, it may increase sales and bring in new demographic into comics, the same way video games have more female gamers now than ever due to video games industry catering more to them. It's a self fulfilling prophecy to cater to the same group because they believe they're the only ones buying, but then, they're the only ones buying because they're the only ones being catered to.

That is what marvel comics editorial want people think about the All New All ... But in the end they are only reinforcing some brands and in Thor's case sacrificing Jane for it, if what you said was really their goal they would press different buttons once they acknowledged all the negative feed back, (that has to do with the creative decisions/execution not genders, i am a huge Sif fan) people that like this comic can spin it in many ways, but in the end they dislike that so many people hate this creative decisions/execution, marvel should explore a pacific appeal regarding new and established readers but no... They actually want all this .... around this comic because keeps some new (ideology) readers and has potential for other/new antagonized readers by some current plots for Thor's return, after we explore all the variables regarding this comic the conclusion is that this is not how you should expand your brand because the appeal range was not well build, its just exploring extremes, with the current creative decisions has this readers and when they revert back will have those readers! And some of the new readers could actually identify/like of Sif, Val or Angela but its everything about Thor and a sacrificed character for his own brand...

I just want them to return Odinson to his rightful place as Thor. Having Jane as Thor goes against so much previously established Thor canon. When Mjolnir was broken it was bonded to Thor's life force so it would only obey him. What happened to that?

Aaron didn't read that issue.

@the_titan_lord: @katanalauncher: Guys i'm telling you there is going to be TWO Thor's.

So? Thors are awesome.

Why you so defensive "So?" sheesh lol was only saying what's going to happen.

I don't mind it although it could get annoying after while not knowing which on I should call Thor in all, but it's an interesting concept.

If this comic's existence riles up the white male population this badly, I hope Jane Foster's cancer gets cured and she remains Thor forever. These comments are fantastic.

Good issue, I like anytime Loki gets the spotlight and I love tales of "Young Thor". The art was interesting and added to the old time feel.

1. Loki is ruined. They made Loki look like Tom.

2. Why Odin is such a d@ck? Odin is not behaving himself lately. Odin being a-hole has no reason being here.

3. This series panders to feminists. It's not about telling a good story.

I'm tired of diversity in comics. We have Doctor Vodoo,Blade,Blue Marvel,Black Panther, and tons of female characters.Which Marvel never uses. How about create new characters.

I have an idea. Why not make Nighthawk black? I really enjoyed him in Max series.

I would like to say that art in this and next issue is utterly disgusting. Looks like someone came out of the cave, proud of his skill in cave drawings, and now wanting to show it to the whole world.

The coloring looks like someone took the brush and united all the colors in one mass of mud. All the faces like a love child of Quasimodo and creepiest shouting Yōkai. One panel with Thor`s face could even creep out a Void to leave Reynold`s body and mind forever.
