The Mighty Thor #3 - The Galactus Seed 3: The Stranger

4

What's the big deal with this Galactus Seed?

Silver Surfer is in to collect the Seed, but Odin is not willing to give it up.

The Good

The art, penciled by Olivier Coipel, inks by Mark Morales, and colors by Laura Martin, are beautiful on this book. The art is a bit cartoony, but it really fits the style of this issue. The colors really pop off the page, and I loved the facial expressions on a lot of the human characters in town. Yes, I loved even the facial expressions of background characters.

I love seeing Silver Surfer go toe-to-toe with the thunder god, only to get his butt handed to him by Odin. He's a cool character to have in a Thor book since there are few characters that can rival Thor's power.

Writer Matt Fraction is probably one of the few writers that could actually get me interested in a Thor book. It flows incredibly well, and I really like the battle over this magic seed. Since Odin won't give it away, you can be sure the next issue is going to be chalk-full of Asgardians vs Galactus and Silver Surfer!

I'm also really digging on the fact that this has nothing to do with Fear Itself and that the events in the book take place before it. Sometimes, a little break from the giant summer even is pretty nice.

One last thing I forgot to mention, I've always been a Loki fan, and kid Loki is the best/most hilarious thing ever. His scene with Sif in this issue is one of my favorite funny-scenes of the week. Funny-scene? Yeah... sure...

The Bad

I'm not a Thor fan, and it's been really hard for me to get into this or any Thor series. I really don't find the character, or his co-stars that interesting.

The Verdict

My biggest problem with the Mighty Thor is that I don't like any of the characters, but that doesn't mean it isn't a great book. This was my first issue of the new series, and even though we're three issues in, I had no problem picking this issue up and understanding what was going on. Even though it's in the middle of a story, it's still a great jumping on point, and that's due in part to the writing of Matt Fraction who keeps it simple and straight-to-the-point. Even a non-Thor fan could enjoy this issue. I recommend The Mighty Thor #3... verily and whatnot.
