The Green Team: Teen Trillionaires #1 - Riot Act

5

These teens aren't Titans -- they're Trillionaires. There's a new team in the DCU, and this one's right on the money.

The Good

I have long been of the opinion that Art and Franco are incapable of writing a bad book, and GREEN TEAM #1 absolutely reinforces that notion. The Eisner-winning kings of the all-ages scene show off their versatility in DC's newest ongoing series, and I'm wondering if there's anything they can't do.

GREEN TEAM is clever and fun right out of the gate. There's a lot to communicate right away, so it's a little bit heavy on both dialogue and voiceover, but the scripting is tight and easy to follow. Art and Franco keep things incredibly grounded (especially considering the subject), and fluidly reference tech, pop culture, and the nexus at which they meet. Ironically -- considering that it's a revamp of a one-shot from the 1970s -- this may be one of the most zeitgeist-y books coming out of DC right now. Where else will you find portmanteaus like "poxpo," hashtags used casually in conversation, or pure passion for bleeding-edge tech and entrepreneurship?

And, for a set of characters that could, by all accounts, be completely unrelatable (unless you're a Rich Kid of Instagram), the teen trillionaires are charming and interesting. Sure, they have exotic pets and jet off to France for lunch, but a little bit of imaginative wish-fulfillment is both acceptable for the medium and appropriate to the premise of the book. Plus, they're future-minded and care about innovation; not entirely the worst way to prioritize their investments.

Ig Guara is off to an excellent start with character designs that fit in with the New 52 palette (Commodore's suit is sleek but structured, and has a Green-Lantern-meets-Cyborg feel to it) yet capture the book's own class warfare motif (the aforementioned suit is sophisticated and shiny, in contrast to Riot's homemade costumes).

The Bad

The book's premise (at least the one it's marketed under) begs for criticism, but it's so well executed that fault is hard to find. The threat posed by Riot is perhaps the only weak spot -- even with strength in numbers, a bunch of guys in handmade costumes with handguns aren't much of a match for high-powered tech and a private security team -- but they might be stronger than they appear. I am anxious to see more of the Green Team's superpowered tech; it's such a tease to reveal Commodore's suit and leave the rest of the team unarmed until at least issue #2.

The Verdict

Despite being presented as the less-sympathetic 1% to the underdog 99%ers of THE MOVEMENT, I found GREEN TEAM to be unabashedly fun. The teen trillionaires aren't flawless, but they're likable, and it's hard to hate a team of motivated kids who want to invest in innovation (especially when said innovation is clearly going to morph them into superheroes!). It's refreshingly light, it's culturally relevant, and it doesn't take itself too seriously.

Yeah, I expected to hate this, but I enjoyed it a ton. More than The Movement, honestly. If I had to pick one to follow and one to drop, this would be the keeper.

Of course they're actually nowhere remotely close to similar to one another, so the advertising which suggested they were was a bit misleading.

But yes, what a tease ending. I want the next issue....now.

@akbogert: I agree -- the books were marketed as counterpoints, but aren't connected at all. (And I'm with you on this book trumping THE MOVEMENT...they're both interesting, but this one's more enjoyable.)

@missj: Aye. I still plan to follow both of them, but right now this has the clear edge. I love Simone and I know she has big plans for how she reveals and focuses on her characters, so there's more of a slow burn element there. But this was refreshingly direct.

You're gonna make me end up reading every book that you review favorably. Had this on me 'we'll see how it does because I'm curious but not sold' list, but it appears as if I've been sold on it.

I liked the fun, fairly light tone of the book. The technologies showcased were pretty fun as well (Internet powered car anyone?) and I thought the image of the scientists in the background messing with the new tech was absolutely hilarious. I thought there was going to be a Commodore 64 reference, rather than an inheritance of 64 trillion dollars, that is insane! There's really no limit for these kids. Commodore and Mohammed were the highlight characters for me, the only ones I found to be weak were JP and Cecilia, but you can only cram so much into one comic, so I can't really complain just yet. The colors along with Guara's art were also just fantastic. I'll definitely be back for more.

Honestly, I've been excited for this for a while now, from the covers it looks like a fun book, and that's something comics, and especially DC comics need. Marvel has a couple of lighthearted books like Deadpool and Hawkeye, but DC seems to be nothing but doom and gloom, hopefully this stays on the cheerful side.

@the_tree: I like that they matched 64 to Commodore at all :) This is going to be one of those "look for easter eggs" books, I think.

I am only a little ashamed to admit that I've spent part of the last two hours casually browsing Polyvore and their shoes...lustfully/woefully looking at things entirely out of my price range.

You're an enabler and I'm okay with it.

@missj: I hope it is, it's fun to find these little hints, clues, and images of other stuff. I was hoping to see some previously seen DCU tech on display, but the closest thing that I saw, so far, looked like a version of Lex's warsuit.

MUCH better than The Movement. I didn't think this issue was amazing, but it's good enough for me to stick around for at least 3-4 more issue to see where it goes.

I'm sold. This was a very fun issue with solid art, interesting characters and a premise I've drawn to ever since I started paying attention to this series' solicits. And yeah, I thought this was way better than The Movement as well. Looks like I've found my new niche book that won't last more than 8 issues.

I wasn't expecting to like either Green Team or the Movement. It's the Movements case it was worse than I thought but I was surprised to find that I like the Green Team. I was a bit put out by the "Trillions" thing but that's something that can be overlooked. I don't see this as a counterpoint to the Movement as was suggested either but this is just the first issue.

Anyone else think that depending on how you look at it that Commodore Murphy could end up a villain or hero?

The Movement is a steaming hot pile of dog poo compared to the Green Team. Remember when you bought a book if the name Gail Simone was on it? Not anymore. Green Team good stuff, it's sad counterpart, The Movement, pure crapola.

I read this thinking I'd hate it but to me it was vastly superior to the movement. I can't wait to read the second issue! The art was fantastic and while some of the characters are annoying, I want to see how they'll go about with their plans.

I do plan to check this out, my concern however is, no one seems to truely understand exactly how much a trillion dollars really is. A group of them together actually have more money than is available. Still, want to check this out and see where it goes.

@millennium: I heard that Red She-Hulk got cancelled as well. I'm fine with JIM & Captain Marvel continuing with low sales. It just boggles my mind how we have 8 individual X-Men/Avengers/Spider-Man titles, but we can't keep a Gambit book afloat. It was hands down my favorite Marvel book and between it being cancelled and X-Factor ending, I'm not pulling any more Marvel.

Although I have JIM, UXM, Captain Marvel, Hawkeye (and now Thor) on my trade wait list.

@billy_batson: Because I'm intentionally transitioning to trades ;) It's how I started and for a while I switched back to reading as they came out, but I'm kind of done with that (save for a few books) for a couple reasons.

@mercy_: will the x-factor thing i some what under stand that one it was the writers decision to cancel the book but gambit and winter soldier how ever i dont get it if its because of low sales then maybe but both book sale over 20k a month so yeah i guess if your not a cash cow avenger, x-man or a different colored spiderman then you dont get a long running solo book

on a side note i find my list of marvel books shrieking every couple of months and i find my self picking up more dc and independent books go figure

REALLY?! You think this book was better than The Movement? I wasn't expecting to like either. I thought Movement would be 1/5 and I ended up not liking the demon villain thing, but I thought it was about a 2/5. Green Team I figured would be a little better, anticipating a 2/5 or 2.5/5, but I'd give this book a 1/5. I struggled to keep my attention, and not just between pages, or panels, but between lines in a speech bubble. I didn't realize I was letting out audible sighs and groans as I read. If rolling eyes could make a sound, I would've been doing that too.

hate to say it but the man wins again. im down with the movement but this is a far superior book. what really got me is that the characters are likable so you care about the things that happen to them and the mistakes they make (mohamed im looking at you). also to have mohamed do the narration was also a nice touch to have someone as clueless as us lead us on this journey into the world of the green team. and i thought this would be another whitewashed book but no, we have a middle eastern brother and two (at least half) latinos on the team. the art was light, fun and beautiful and the writing...let me put it this way, i read so many books i have to speed read most of them or not read them at all. this is one of the ones i read every word from begining to end (up there with journey into mystery, avengers, uncanny x-men and young avengers)

@akbogert: i disagree i can see how they are counterpoints to each other and lets remember the green team is still in the early stages of forming their team where the movement is already organized and in action. commodore even mentioned being concerned about a "certain movement" so i think its going to be a more subtle connection and we will see it build over time

@perfect_10: They may connect in the future (Simone has said as much) but they are not currently related to each other in any significant way (Simone has also said as much). This took place in New York. The Movement created a new location for its action to take place in.

Yet the way these books were marketed actually suggested these two teams would be fighting each other -- that the other team would play a role within the central conflict of each book. That is what I'm saying was quite misleading.

I really can't believe people like this, I thought it was awful. I found all the characters were just different degrees of unlikable and after the first few pages I was barely reading it just so that I could get to the end quicker. The use of a word like "poxpo" would also go squarely in "the bad" part of a review I was writing.
