Fearless Defenders #1

5

The first issue in this all-new series serves as a fantastic introduction to both Valkyrie and Misty Knight.

The Good

Writer Cullen Bunn opens the first issue of this series by introducing us to Valkyrie first, and the scene is in which he does so is really beautifully written. The set-up and the panel layout is perfect; taking the character back to her youth. It's this really great scene that offers readers a look at Valkyrie's introspective thoughts which I felt was a very different way to start. The pacing changes almost immediately when we meet Misty Knight. One of the things I most liked about the start of this series is the way that Bunn immediately establishes Misty as this force to be reckoned with. She's a kick-ass chick who puts her foot down immediately. The panel layout really flows with the story, too, and it's great seeing Misty portrayed not only as this "no nonsense" chick and super spy. She's smart and can think really quickly on her feet, and that's a great way to introduce her to new readers. You get the sense that if something has happened, it is probably because she planned it. The dialogue is great and I just loved the way she was written here.

There are other characters we meet in this first issue, as well. For example, Misty shares a great scene with Dr. Annabelle Riggs. Riggs, who hires Misty for a job, has a really fun and light-hearted interaction with Misty before things get really serious. The pacing I think is what really blew me away; in these first few scenes there is so much going on, but it's perfectly paced. One scene transitions into the next really seamlessly and that was a huge strength here.

The issue has everything you could want: suspense, great dialogue, really perfect story layout and also a wonderful cast of characters whose interactions on panel are really exciting and complimentary to one another. The story is paired up with some really beautiful art by Will Sliney which really blew me away. Sexy, smart and strong: if this series is anything like this first issue, then it might just be my new 'must-read.'

The Bad

Honestly, there is really nothing bad about this issue. I was very pleasantly surprised.

The Verdict

I have to admit, when I first found out about this series I was a little bit surprised. Sure I was glad to see Marvel take a chance on a very female-centric ongoing series by putting together a team of strong female characters in one book, but I had my hesitations. I have never been a huge fan of either Misty Knight or Valkyrie and I thought they would make such an odd couple when this series was first announced. I am happy to report that not only was I pleasantly surprised by the fact that these two ladies can get along just fine, but I was also shocked to see such a solid first issue for this series. Bunn does an amazing job laying out the story, setting everything up in a way that is easy to understand as well as entertaining. You have these two really different characters headlining a series, and Bunn makes it work to his advantage. The result is this very quirky dialogue and really clever interaction between two very different individuals. You also have the basis for a very interesting story and a very brief introduction to the villain in this ongoing. Great pacing and pretty art made this book a fun read. I loved what I saw here and I am definitely excited to read more.

She should have long been an Avenger. Awesome powers, and an incredible amount of depth. All around great character that doesn't get the attention she has earned "maybe she will show up here at some point"

And here I was hoping that this would get a bad review.

Not for any particular malicious reasons; but the amount of books I'm picking up on the side, (entirely separate from my pull list) is getting ridiculous. Like small fortune ridiculous.

I'm starting to really dislike good reviews, simply because I'm spending too much money. And I feel like I need to support these books.

Get it on TPB from Amazon. If you buy it of the shelf you spend $48 for 12 issues. From amazon, you can buy the trade for $18 for 1. Trade of 6 issues and you dont have to wait month after month for issues to release.

You can put trades on que and order them when ever you will have free time. As you order one, you add anothrr to the que. I have like catwoman and the flash on my que because I dont want subscriptions to them like i do the titles i must have every month and just read them when ever I am in th we mood.I

Thing is, a book this minor needs all the support it can get.

I say buy the trades of Avengers, X-Men, or whatever book you know will sell a lot on its own and is a $4 book, and instead pick this up in its place. That way, you can buy the $4 book trade a lot cheaper and keep books like this one afloat.

Valid point. However there is certain comics that I like to pickup month after month like the high seller titles. Good talk though. I will keep your strategy in mind for the middle shelf titles.

@Babs: Can't believe you weren't a big fan of Val, don't dissappoint me again. She's a strong character, all around, possibly the first female character I liked in comics. Especially the old school Defenders days.

That's...exactly what I meant.

Drop a title like Avengers, Wolverine and the X-Men, or anything that is $4 that you know will sell and just buy it in trade form when it comes out. Support the books that need the support. Buy the bigger name books like Avengers in trade form.

Was I not clear?

i had the almost totally opposite experience as babs. i went in with great expectations and high hopes for this series because i love both misty and valkyrie so much and its awesome to see two characters who i thought would never even meet let alone work together have their own book but it was just....it just was. i didnt hate it, but i didnt love it. i didnt get me excited, the jokes werent funny, and the art...marvel really needs to get on the dc bandwagon and stop this false advertising. you dont give me teaser after teaser of mark brooks' gorgeous art then give me will sliney. sliney's art and the sub par dialogue gives the book a cartoonist feel and not in a good way. i get this feeling that they arent really invested in these characters. i mean misty talks totally out of character. read the last heroes for hire series or the daughters of the dragon mini, THAT is misty knight. the book wasnt all bad. asgard, magic relics, and aragon (valkyrie's pegasus) are all five by five for me, and the first 10 pages or so i did enjoy, it was a nice introduction of misty and valkyrie. it wasnt until after that that everything went downhill. i hope everything picks up next issue cause i really want to enjoy this journey. hopefully they get Moonstar right and she brings something special to the book

Well yea, I think it does, these characters have never set eyes on each other before and within seconds after a grand total of 16 words of dialogue spoken they are kissing each other with absolutely no context other than a word balloon that says "Dr Riggs likes girls" not to mention that Viking zombies are currently attacking everybody around them, now I'm all for LGTB relationships but this just looks like straight up fan service for creepy pepole.

I agree with this pretty much exactly.  I was looking forward to it.  I love the old Defenders and Val was a big part of them.  I am all on board with an all-female team and look forward to Dani.  But the story and pacing and dialog just didn't do it for me. And the art was mediocre at best.  He did some good facial expressions.  I have to say, cheesy as this may sound, that kiss was really sexy.  It was probably the best-drawn part in the book; the Misty sections were really sub-par in the art department. The first page with Val thinking/dreaming/whatever was nicely done.  I'll keep getting this for at least a few more months just to support Val; hopefully things pick up.  Honestly if the art was better, it would change my whole impression of the book.
