Defenders #1 - Breaker of Worlds Part 1: I Hate Myself And Want To Die

5

It's a classic underdog situation: a couple Marvel characters who've fallen by the wayside have banded together to face a threat of cosmic proportions. Will solid storytelling and great art keep this book from the chopping block?

The Good

This book does wonders for the characterization of the team without sacrificing its pages to long, drawn-out, bore-inducing dialog. There's just enough going on that it keeps it from becoming a chore to read, and that's great for a set-up phase.

Each character gets a bit of description, and it brings the reader up to speed with events they may not know about. Some characters, like Doctor Strange, haven't had their own series in awhile; the opening pages of this book do a great job of setting the person's tone for the reader.

This is important because a lot of these heroes have gotten a bum rap for being incapable of carrying their own books on their back (well, except for the Hulk, arguably). Putting them together seems like a good idea, as long as they can keep the challenges threatening and the writing solid.

This book has a very light-hearted tone to it despite not having an overly-comical premise. The goal the Defenders are looking to achieve is right there and set out, and now the team has to hit a number of steps along the way. It's simple outlining, but it fast-forwards through the long start-up that a lot of Marvel books have had problems with (crossovers especially) and gets us right to the meat of things.

Issue one sets up number two quite well without resorting to hokey cliffhangers or full-page reveals; in short, it looks to be a wild ride that is rife with good storytelling. That's something we need more of.

The Bad

I think the Silver Surfer's introduction was a bit short-sighted, as there's been some changes to his characters that weren't quite explained. Norrin's transformation in the pages of MIGHTY THOR don't seem to line up quite nicely with the personality that's displayed in this book, which is weird, as Matt Fraction writes both of them.

The Verdict

However, I'm willing to forgive that one little foible because this issue had me smiling from beginning to end. Like I mentioned above, the threat of the book doesn't leave your head scratching in confusion, the characters are well laid-out, and the consequences are apparent without having to rely on cheap stunts for shock and awe.

In short, DEFENDERS feels like a classic in the making from issue one, as the story, characters and purpose seems thought out and properly scouted. This book deserves your attention and dollars, if only to keep it from falling under the waves of drudgery and higher-selling books.

I really hope this will be the fraction book i like. I have not loved any of his marvel stuff since Iron Fist, which was great. Iron man has been solid, but UXM and Thor until recently have been average at best.

I really want to pick up this book, but Fraction is either fantastic or horrible - he is never at a middle-ground. I mean, look at Fear Itself, it was a pile of bollocks. Then you look at Invincible Iron Man and that is genius. Gah! To pull or not to pull, that is the question.

fraction isn't the best. giving the book a read more for the silly cast of b-siders, and the dodson's. fear itself was bad,and i stopped reading thor/iron man because both series are subpar writing. still after re-reading my last sentence, I'll give fraction one more chance with a new book.

Not a fan of Dodson by any means. That paired with Fraction is keeping me from pulling this. That and none of the characters are favorites of mine.

I'm over with Fraction's Marvel books. I'll pick up Iron Man back issues during a sale. I'll pick up Casanova in trade. He has reached Bendis status where his writing is just avg. to bad now. I miss the good old Marvel days like his Iron Man Most Wanted Arc, Disassembled, Immortal Iron Fist, War Journal. Guess we'll never get those days back.

yeah I dropped Iron Man. Really gave it a chance but it just continued to go downhill..this last issue was Ok...but not enough to make me stick it through.

@Kallarkz:

Understandable, I really wanted to try out the Mandarin arc which I have been waiting for so long. But I just couldn't spending 4 bucks on a book I'm not enjoying anymore and I could get it cheap later on. Planning to bind my entire Fraction Iron Man collection one day. So I'll just wait till I find these for a dollar each.

Maybe I am easy to please, but I liked it. I think others will too.

I wrote my own Review, if anyone is interested: The Impossible Is Here!

I also added some wiki information in the issue details (contains spoilers for the issue). It should give you an idea of the flow, art and writing execution within the book...

I am really looking forward to this comic. I've been speaking out on how I hate that Marvel doesn't try to revive other team books outside of the Avengers and Xmen. I always felt that the New Avengers current team was just the Defenders anyway. My only issue is once again Marvel keeps using the same character in different books. With Red She-Hulk and the Silver Surfer, what is the point of having Namor? Let him do is thing with the Xmen for now. Marvel has too many great unused characters to be showing us the same person in different books.

I might pick this up depending on how heavy the list is for me today at the shop. I'm not currently reading any marvel books. The last one I read was Captain America, but I quit sometime after they brought Steve Rogers back to life. I think there were starting to be a lot of event tie-ins or something, i remember having a hard time keeping up and I just quit it. I'm curious about this though.
