The Amazing Spider-Man #9 - Spider-Verse Part 1: The Gathering; The Feast

4

Spider-Verse is here. So are a whole bunch of Spider-People. Get ready for some craziness.

The Good

We've been seeing events leading up to this and it's finally here. Dan Slott and company are delivering more Spider-People than you could imagine. As we the issue starts off, we catch a strange glimpse at Peter Parker. Soon we see the hunt begin along with more information. It's been known that Morlun would be involved as one of the hunters, but we've been seeing, in EDGE OF SPIDER-VERSE, that Morlun has some family that's going to partake in the fun. As if Morlun wasn't bad enough, now there's going to be his siblings to deal with as well.

With the way this story has been building up the last couple months, Slott doesn't waste any time here. Once we have Peter and Silk together, they are soon joined by other Spider-Folk from their universe along with the appearance from some other familiar versions. You'll want to pause and savor each meeting as you ponder the implications of it all. Because Morlun and family are deadly vampiric killers, you'll also have that queasy feeling not knowing who will survive and who might be in danger.

Since this is just the beginning, of course we're still seeing the gathering of Spider-Men. That means we get to see Olivier Coipel's take on all these different versions of Spider-Man. As I mentioned before, you'll want to pause again to admire how fantastic the art is.

Some may have noticed the price but this is an oversized issue. The main story, with Coipel art, is 24 pages. There is also a 10-page back-up by Slott and Giuseppe Camuncoli. Camuncoli gives us glimpses at even more Spider-People. It's almost like playing a game to see if you can identify each of them.

The Bad

My biggest problem is more of a personal one with the issue. I'm simply not a Morlun fan. I can appreciate the deadly factor he adds to the story. The big threat of him and his family is evident but I just don't care for him as a villain or character. The interactions between Morlun and his family are just the weak parts for me. I don't need to see so much of their bickering with each other.

I'm not sure how I feel about 616 Peter being the "greatest" of all the Spider-People. Seems too convenient.

This is a great first part of it all. Even though we're getting into the overall story, it's still just the first part. Things are being set up (in big ways). It's clear that action is going to heat up in big ways after this issue. Definitely something to look forward to. Hopefully the other versions won't be here just to be cannon fodder.

The Verdict

Spider-Verse is here! Dan Slott has already shown that this is not going to be a walk in the park for Spider-Man or the other versions. Dan Slott is cooking up quite the story and Olivier Coipel's art is amazing in the extended first part of the issue. We also get a back-up with art by Giuseppe Camuncoli. That gives a total of thirty-four pages for just a dollar more than the regular price. If you're a Spider-Man fan, you owe it to yourself to check out what all the excitement is about. Even if you don't like Spider-Man that much, chances are you'll find a version within that you do. Spider-Verse is definitely going to shake things up for Spider-Man's world.

I agree when you said "I'm not sure how I feel about 616 Peter being the "greatest" of all the Spider-People. Seems too convenient." as it reminds me of enduring Slott's writing but bought the issue cause Coipel's work is just WOW!!

I was thinking about dropping this series for this arc. Can someome explain to me what spider verse is exactly? Is it just every spider-man ever teaming up to fight morlun?

The art by Oliver Coipel alone was worth the price of admission for this book.

Morlun, his father, his brothers, his sisters, the entire small race - or breed? - of Morluns.

I fairly sure that 616 spider-man being the greatest is due to him fighting morlun alone twice and (sort of) winning when none of the others could pull that off. He's the trump card because he's been through this before.

I'm not surprised that they hold him in such high regard. From what I gather he is only one out of all of them who has ever actually defeated an Inheritor (Morlun) not once but twice without the Enigma Force. Just good old fashioned Spider-Sense and reflexes, a dash of quick thinking, a spritz of prep, and a hint of Parker Luck. Pretty impressive resume for the war if you ask me.

JUst read up on who Morlun was on his page here, kinda a dumb character. Would have prefered if he were an evil Spider-man. Other than Dopleganger, is there an evil version of Spidey? & NO, the symbiotes do not count.

I know right? Come on G-Man! This book was absolutely fantastic, I enjoyed every second of it. The art and the writing both were firing on all cylinders. This is how you do the first issue of an event. Now I can't wait for SpOck (and his team of bad boys/girl) to appear next issue!

@escgamer: Morlun did kill Spider-Man before. That's what was said when this was announced, Morlun has a better average against Spider-Man compared to his other villains. He hasn't fought him often but when he did...

@jayc1324:

I'm going to assume you haven't been reading the Edge of Spider verse issues. Here's the plot rundown as we know it:

SPOILERS!!!!

Morlun(or a alternate version of him, it's not too clear) apparently has a family that way back when, was able to capture the Master Weaver(basically a Spider-Man that has near Godlike powers.) Using his power, they've been traveling the hundreds of multiverses, killing every "Spider Totem" they find. (The version of Spiderman for that reality.)

Now's where it gets a bit complicated. Sometime back in Superior Spider Man, (the story arc where Horizen Labs was destroyed) SpOck was teleported somewhere for a unknown period of time, and he had no account of what he had been doing, wherever he had been. Apparently he was accidentaly teleported to 2099, and, trying to find his way back to his time, he built a teleporter(because apparently ex-evil geniuses can build those on the fly) and went back to the time he thought was his. However, he ended up in many different realities, coming across Spider-Men that had been slaughtered by apparently the same creature. On one of these visits, he was able to save the Spider-Man from that universe(the Indian SM I think), and added him to his "Spider Army". He then went around the multiverse, recruiting diff. S-M, like SM Noir, What If? SM, etc. Now he's trying to destroy the Morlun family with his Spider-Army.

That clear it up? : )

Good beginning.
Problems: What happened with New Warriors. And peter being the greatest. I mean i get it, he's the best... but wouldnt it be better if that was ambiguous. Like in the end of this the reader goes, "yup! thats the greatest spider man!"

I guess the reason 616-Peter is the most important Spider of them all is because he's the only one who has faced Morlun and beaten him. But then that brings the question, what's so menacing about Morlun and his family anyway? If I remember correctly, Peter beat him the first time because the radiation in his blood made him uneatable for the villain. I guess not every single Spider-Totem was bitten by a radioactive Spider but can't they just grab the few that actually were bitten by one and go kick the asses of Morlun's clan?

The big threat of him and his family is evident but I just don't care for him as a villain or character.

I dont think you're supposed to.
The story's about the Spider-Men running around.Morlun is not an Osborn or a Joker, that you read a story for him,or because of him, too.

I'm not sure how I feel about 616 Peter being the "greatest" of all the Spider-People. Seems too convenient.

He is greatest becouse he is in the middle of the Web of destiny (thats what was old Madame Web talking about in Grim Hunt over and over), He's never chosen wrong path or path he wasn't supposed to go along. He is mainstream. Creators favourite. He can not die (not really, blah blah superior, it's over, right?). He can not be killed. Morlun knows. He tried hard.

I did a few a while back, but I fell off of it. I'll try to be better about it in the future. It seems like a lot of the people that do write those reviews are people with an axe to grind with certain writers (Slott chief among them), so I should do some to balance that out.

@g_man: I understand that but I feel in the comments section you can express succinct opinions. I like the review, just felt it should have been 5 stars imo. I wish I had both the time (work, school) to delve deep into a review and the credibility/renown you guys have with your reviews (aka they're actually read by quite a few people).

I thought it was an alright issue. It could've been a lot better imo. I don't like how silk and 616 Spidey have to reiterate everything that has been going own in the past few issues. We get it, they have the hot's for each other, you don't have to spell it out all the time. I agree with the review that all these Spider-Men coming together was too fast. I almost wish they would focus on a solid team of like 5-10 spiders instead of over 20. It's a little too much even with the tie-ins. I want to sit down and learn more about these characters but instead they just feel like place holders for a future conflict. Same thing with Morluns family. Couldn't he just have one brother, sister, and a father and that would suffice? Besides my qualms I thought it was beautifully drawn and the action was pretty cool.

This was a great issue and I loved how they talked about the other since I always thought that was a really interesting thing. I wasn't expecting this to be so good because so far all the Spider-verse stuff has been not very good, but this was great. Can't wait for the rest.

It maybe a bit obvious making 616 the greatest and stating it early, but for plot reasons it will add pressure(responsibility) on him as the others (Except Superior) will be looking to him for answers or to lead the way; he will but heads with Superior who will want to be the centre of attention and they will probably come to some kind of understanding near the end, leading to the ultimate victory.

I thought it was a pretty strong issue and aside from maybe introducing too many characters too soon, left me wanting more.

@cobramorph: Edge of Spiderverse showed one of the spider totems as being rather evil. He turned into an actual spider and was killing people.

@wafflesock50: He didn't really make it on the fly. The technology to travel through time already existed in 2099, but was illegal. Remember, Miguel O'Hara was able to use it to get to the 616 modern time. He just modified that technology with some stuff he took from Stark-Fujikawa and more stuff from Alchemax.

@webheadcomics: They did focus a lot on a lot of these characters in the back of Superior Spider-man and Amazing Spider-man, as well as the Edge of Spiderverse stories. Some of them don't need background info as they've already existed (for example the one with the enigma force was in an issue of What If?) and have info about them available. Also there are going to be a few miniseries consisting of teams (Scarlet Spiders, Spiderverse Team-up, Spider Women).

@idontlikebirds I realize they focus on these character in other issues and most spidey characters already have a back-up story. My problem is that in ASM issue 9 they throw all these characters together in a too convenient fashion and after that there is not time to settle down for these spider-men to get to know each other. They all have their own agenda's and it would be great to see some of that in ASM 9.

That's also why i feel there are too many spider-men. It's hard to have a footing when you have to remind yourself which spider-man this is. There should be a solid 10 maybe 12 different characters. More than that and it feels al over the place

@tximinoman:

There are a couple reasons why they probably can't do this. One, for simple story reasons, the Morlun they had Spider-Man beat with his blood is probably not the Morlun they wanted for Spider-Verse. However, since he's already appeared in the series, they decided to use him I guess, and just ignore the way Spiderman beat him. Two, as for why the Morlun family is dangerous, it appears that only three Spidermen in the entire multiverse can hurt them(The Other, The Bride, and the Scion. The Other being Ben Reilly, who's already had a tussle with Deamos and has been shown to have hurt him.) Why, I have no idea, but it's clear that NOTHING else can hurt them. SpOck used his weapon on full power and it didn't faze them, they got stabbed with their own weapons and they just shrugged it off, and I'm pretty sure in one of the EoPV issues they were facing a god of some kind and didn't get hurt. (Of course, this begs the question of how Cosmic Spiderman is somehow unbeatable and thus the reason they don't come near his universe, but whatever.)

Thirdly, Peter beat Morlun that time by pumping MORE radioactive blood into him, along with his regular blood. And that left him pretty sick. Not only is it very risky, but Morlun would probably remember to watch out for it(assuming it's the same one.)

So I just read the issue, I'm a couple weeks behind on my reading. Did anyone notice during Miles' scene they got the universe number wrong? It was Universe 610, not 1610. Makes me think that we might be getting Miles Morales and Jessica Drew Clone in this event but it WON'T be the Ultimate Universe versions, just near exact copies.

The feast scene was very gruesome, I feel that Morlun and his family seem like legit and grave threat.

Of course 616 Peter Parker is the greatest Spider of them all, his the greatest hero ever.
