Superman: American Alien #5 - Eagle

5

The telling of Superman's early days continues. He has a costume now and is about to take on his first super-powered foe.

When Superman: American Alien was first announced, a big question was, did we really need another Superman origin story? Regardless of what the answer might be, thank goodness we're getting this series. Max Landis is taking a fresh approach in introducing Superman to the world, and it's been a blast.

Each issue takes place at a different point in Clark's life and features a different artist. This is another aspect I thought would bother me. I'm not a fan when different artists are brought in. With the way each issue breaks up the overall story, it works out perfectly. We're getting some cool stories with amazing art by several of today's fantastic artists.

At this point in the story, Clark has decided on taking up a superhero guise to help those in need. He understands he has to protect his true identity, and he put together a makeshift costume. What's fascinating is seeing how naive Clark is despite being so incredibly powerful. Landis captures his pure innocence in just wanting to do the right thing. There's a great moment between Superman (who hasn't adopted that name yet since it's not a priority for him to have a superhero name) and Lex Luthor. Lex gets pretty raw on Superman. It's a pure Lex moment.

Francis Manapul does wonders with the art and color. Seeing his art is a huge reminder how much he's missed on a monthly book. Seeing his version of a younger Clark, Lois, Lex, and even Parasite is wonderful. The scenes with simple conversations or the bombastic action is perfect. You'll find yourself almost getting distracted just staring at panels when trying to read the issue.

Superman: American Alien is a fantastic Superman story anyone can read. With each issue, I love this series more and more. Each issue is an excellent example as to how great of a character Superman is. Max Landis is doing a remarkable job and Francis Manapul's art is top notch. Some of the moments in Superman's life told here might not completely jive with everything we know or have seen before, but it's been a joy to read. We need more Superman stories like this.
