Superior Spider-Man #1 - Hero or Menace?

5

Get ready for a different sort of Spider-Man. It's still Spider-Man but there's a little more going on. Reading this issue may change your thoughts if you've been concerned about all the recent developments.

The Good

It should be obvious that the big change of Otto Octavius now inhabiting Spider-Man's body wasn't done on a whim. Because of the importance of the character to both fans and Marvel Comics, there's no way this big change was done without being thought out. In this issue as well, you can see certain aspects being dealt with that should appease those that have mixed feelings about the change.

I, myself, am a huge Spider-Man fan. I can understand the outrage and frustration over someone like Doc Ock having 'defeated' Spider-Man in this fashion. But because it's a comic book, we know the hero will win out in the end. What we have is an idea here that allows for a different kind of storytelling. After fifty years of essentially the same type of Spider-Man stories, we're now seeing the character a little differently. This isn't just Doc Ock pretending to be Spider-Man. For all intents and purposes, he is Spider-Man. He has all of his memories along with the influence and desire to be a hero. Those memories will also serve as a reminder to him and readers how much of a hero Spider-Man. But at the same time, that reminder is what makes it difficult for long time reader to accept this (temporary) change.

That's where this story turns out to be a little different than the typical villain-turned-hero bit we've seen several times. Otto Octavius isn't necessarily an evil person. He didn't start out in life aiming to become a supervillain. Circumstances lead to that happening. His move to switch bodies with Spider-Man was out of necessity for survival rather than the need to actually become Spider-Man. Now that he's there, he's finding he can't help but want to do some heroic deeds, but on his own terms. This is where he can prove himself to be a better more intelligent person. Something he's wanted his whole life but was never given the opportunity. Ridicule and stereotypes held him back. Now with an intellect greater than Peter Parker's, we are seeing how that could be applied to making Spider-Man a more efficient and effective superhero…at least as Otto envisions it.

Of course because Dan Slott has been planning this for a while, it's not just a simple story of Otto now trying to be Spider-Man. Aside from the struggle of his old ways and the desire to be better, there is another huge development besides Otto adjusting to being in Peter Parker's life. We thought Slott revealed all the secrets behind his trick, it turns out that isn't quite the case.

Ryan Stegman's art ferociously tackles the story. The action between Spider-Man and the Sinister Six is a glorious scene that gives a great introduction to this different Spider-Man. He's not going to be operating in necessarily the same fashion as before. The detail Stegman puts in makes you feel the action as it explodes across the page. Of course it's not just action he needs to deal with. His depiction of Peter Parker with Octavius inside lets you feel the arrogance and short temper that will clearly allow readers to distinguish that this is a slightly different kind of Spider-Man comic. His interaction with co-workers and Mary Jane makes Slott's script come to life.

The ending actually had an emotional impact on me that I wasn't expecting.

The Bad

It's unfortunate that some will immediately dismiss the potential for storytelling here without really giving it a chance. As with most single issues, it's sometimes hard to judge an overall story based on just the first act. You can seen that there is something going on here, something more than the subject of many complaints since AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #700. Hopefully readers will keep an open mind and remember this is a comic book and we've seen crazier stories in the past.

The Verdict

I've said it before, I'm not crazy about the development of this new Spider-Man but Dan Slott and Ryan Stegman are enough to make it work. The change that has occurred is just a small part in this current story. We are going to see a different sort of Spider-Man story with a struggle between good and evil that should reinforce how much of a hero Spider-Man truly is. Readers need to have an open mind to find out how this crazy idea could turn into one of the most interesting Spider-Man stories we've seen in years. Just because Otto is in charge doesn't mean the story is over. This change will allow us to explore what exactly made Spider-Man the hero he was along with Otto trying to make himself, and Spider-Man, a better (or superior) hero. Stegman's art is a spectacular sight and Edgar Delgado's colors enhances the entire package to make this a great read that is also a visual treat for your eyes. Whether you like the idea of change or not, you'll want to see for yourself what Dan Slott has up his sleeve this month. This is a great start to a new chapter of Spider-Man and you're not going to want to miss a second of it.

Going to wait until I hear what the majority of people think before picking this one up. I miss Peter Parker, and don't see the point in having a more aggressive Spider-man book when we have Scarlet Spider and Venom books out already. Need something more 'Parker'-ish

I will admit that someone on tumblr leaked the issue and I read it.....I was going to buy it regardless and after reading it, I flipped out. I am so excited for this series, you have no clue. That last page (1, I so called it. 2, nucakvjvbyfmnzhgic) I am going to pick up every issue and see where this story goes. All those skeptics, PLEASE GIVE THIS A SHOT! YOU WILL FIND SOMETHING TO LOVE.

I didn't like this issue because it completely did away with the "I lived peter's life and know that I have to better myself" plot point from ASM 700, and instead made it so that Ock is being forced to be a good guy. He's not doing this out of his own free will, which makes me wonder: why bother?

People talking horrid about this issue without actually reading it are completely out to lunch. If you're going to complain about something, atleast give it a chance first or your opinion is stupidly biased.

I went into this series expecting to hate it, but came out of it actually impressed and wanting to read the next issue. Say all you want about it, but Dan Slott wrote this great and I'm glad I have it in my pull box.

For me, the really surprising thing in the issue is the fact that Ock's villain side villain side shows this strongly, this early. Plus the ending shows that this change might just be as temporary as most people thought is would be. This is just another opportunity to send Parker back to his old, crappy life.

It was obvious that this was going to get 5 stars, I see this being like Snyder's Batman on this site every issue will get 5 stars and there will be no criticism about anything it will only be about how amazing it is. Sometimes even if an issue is great there should be some criticism.

Anyways I admit hearing what the twist ending is get me excited to read this issue.

I loved it. Stegman's art and that story-telling won me over. Hopefully when Ramos and Camuncoli rotate in, the quality doesn't drop too much. Like the majority, I hated the new suit, but now I want to know more about it. I'm on board, definitely ready for the Age of Ultron!

We can't justify an entire series based on the first issue while the first issue stand alone was good. we will have to see how the story plays out with in the next 3 issues to gauge how well the series will flow.

ITS ONLY THE FIRST ISSUE PEOPLE!

bought this issue today, read it, had a poo, wiped my bum with it, flushed it away. Im not sure it was how cheesy it was or the fact that he's should be remained "the Supeior Pervert-Man" or just the awful ending.

I really enjoyed it. There were some 'creepy' moments. The ending was a bit too soon of a reveal but it was necessary to keep all the haters on board throughout the run of this series.

I am interested.

BTW: Simpsons reference! Hilarious:

Not bad, not bad...

Now that Slott stopped trolling us I think it can be an interesting read. The ending was kinda predictable and it happened a little too soon but in that case it wasn't really a bad thing.

The Good: We get to see a different take on Spider-man. Stegman's art is a step up from Ramos. No offense to Mr. Ramos but his work during Spider-Island just did not do it for me.

The Bad: The plot point that caused this to happen just got flushed down the crapper probably because of fan outrage. Because of the last page there is now a huge plot hole that just does not compute. It would have been nice to see what Otto's invention that impressed Max was.

Fan outrage seems to have had some effect otherwise we probably would not have seen Peter at all until Uatu actually fired up his Ghost Catcher.

Verdict: This does not seem to warrant its own separate series. The last page reveal makes this pretty much Amazing Spider-man #701. 3/5

As someone who's not a huge Spider-Man fan I loved this issue! My biggest problem with Spider-Man is the goofy way he fights. Sure I like his character and his pathos or whatever but I'm just always bored when I see him in battle. At first I was unimpressed with his encounter with the new sinister six. He seemed like he was just fighting the same way Peter did.

This comic really kicked off for me the moment the hidden claws came into the scene. From there the comic was an absolute delight to read as Otto proves without a shadow of a doubt why he is the Superior Spider-Man. I really enjoy watching everyone in Peter's life getting weirded-out by his new persona. The end was pretty touching as well though I fear Slott is tipping his hand a little in how easily Pete could come back into the picture. However things turn out I'm having a blast reading this book and will be kind of sad once Doc Ock moves on for good. There's something strangely exciting about reading this Diabolic version of Marvel's mascot.

This is a perfect example of why you shouldn't jump the gun before you read something. I, like most, enjoyed issue #700's story but was not happy personally with what happened to Peter in the end. I said I would give Superior Spider-Man a chance and thankfully it pays off. My personal interest in the story is renewed and look forward with what comes next! Nice work Slott!

I still support the theory of Otto being the Superior Spider-Man, doing such a great job with it and the life of Peter Parker, he's going to set things right in Peter's life just in time for Pete to regain control of his body. If this is the case, then the great scheme from Spidey's great enemy will be the greatest things that ever happens to Peter Parker. Does that make sense? All just in time for Amazing Spider-Man 2: The Sequel.

I got the end of this issue spoiled on Tumblr. Now I still really dislike the concept of the Doc Ock on the brain thing.... and I find the whole Lets make Spider-man darker unnecessary... but I kinda got a little bit of hope back for the character. Still not a fan of the art, though. I get a 'Mwah' feeling of it... Hopefully this thing gets fixed soon.... and at that moment, please, ditch this version of the costume...

Okay, I have a problem with the Doc Ock comment. I mean, you're right, in the beginning he did not start out as a villain, true. However, every action he has taken in the last decade has pretty much stated that he not only had a chance of mind, but he embraced it. He was a villain to his very core, willing to betray, backstab and kill to get his way. Now suddenly he's a hero cause he sees things from Peter's perspective, I'm sorry but I simply do not buy this as a sufficient motivation for his change of heart. On top of that he got it by taking the cowards way out, he didn't want to die to he made someone else take his place. I simply can not get behind this book, to me this is just as bad as Spider-Man making a deal with the devil for his own selfish reasons. Finally, saying that you're enjoying it cause peter will win in the end, you all are assuming the plan is to switch back, no where has that even been mentioned. If sales are decent, where's the incentive to do so?
