Supergirl #3 - Memento

5

Supergirl has stumbled onto Earth, but will she come to terms with her new planet, or will she embark on a search for Krypton?

The Good

There is so much that is good in this issue! The third issue of SUPERGIRL opens up with Kara talking to Clark, who is trying to help her come to terms with both her powers as well as the fact that she crash landed on an alien planet and has lost her ship. I love the dialogue in this opening scene. The writers really captured Superman's compassion through his dialogue but they leave it open ended. They leave you with the impression that Clark will let her find her own way -- to a certain extent; but that he will also do his utmost to help her. It's a great scene.

This issue introduces us to a brand new villain: Simon Tycho, a trillionaire who has so much money and power that he hangs out on his very own satellite orbiting the Earth. At first I admit, I thought to myself, "great another evil trillionaire adversary. First Luthor, now this guy," but the character really won me over. He's interesting and manipulative and you get that from the dialogue. The writers have yet to reveal what his motives are, although I wouldn't rule out world domination...eventually. Tycho clearly likes power, so it's no wonder that he would be drawn to Kara and her powers.

We've all read this story before: powerful/rich dude finds alien, lures alien to rich dude's base to run tests, realizes what alien powers and weaknesses are and tries to capitalize on them. That's fine, you can have a premise that's already been used in the past; it's what you do with that premise and how you tell that story that matters; and what the creative team is doing in this issue and so far in this series is very interesting and a ton of fun.

The Bad

Theres a certain level of predictability in this issue, but it really doesn't matter. Overall, a really solid, fun, gorgeous book.

The Verdict

Everything from the writing to the pencils and the colors is fantastic. This issue is beautifully executed. The pacing is perfect, the dialogue is interesting and will suck you in. Even though it's a story we have seen before, it's still a ton of fun to see how this particular creative team executes the tale. If you're looking for a straight up super-powered superhero story, this is definitely a book you will want to pick up. Start from the first issue, its been a fantastic series so far.

I have some mixed feelings about this issue and because of that would give it a 3.5/5. First is the art. The first 4-5 pages of this issue are amazing and probably the best depiction of the new kryptonian "armor" that Kal and Kara wear to date. Superman's face was a bit off in close-ups but other than that a great visual. But as the issue went on the action scenes just did not stand-up to the more still shot aspect of the first few pages. Plus Kara's outfit switched from looking more armor-ish (can we just skip ahead in Action Comics to finally figure out what these outfits really are.......just kidding) to the more traditional skin tight spandex. Also agree with Sara on the predictability of the issue but also the whole "you must be lying to me" dialog is getting a bit old.

But what really drags this issue down is the villain. The writers have complete freedom with the new 52 to change things around and they create a Lex Luthor clone. At this point we might as well re-introduce all the Bizarro's. Did they really think we needed another rich guy who thinks he's better than everyone? What a complete waste of what could have been a great first villain.

The last part was the ever so slight new power or explanation of a power that just rushed through. In issue #1 we saw Kara use a sonic scream.....or something similar......and now her body is giving off heat as near solar levels?????? She suddenly Supergirl has the superhuman ability to make herself warm? Just weird and makes me think this is something as throw away as her previous incarnation growing sunstone crystals from her body. Plus, if she's putting off that much heat how is nothing in the station affected? The secretary woman says hull integrity could be compromised yet the little metal butterflies don't explode or anything until Kara crushes them in her palm. So what did the internal body temperature rise really do?

Overall I'm enjoying the fact that this series is keeping a quick pace and keeping the reader off our feet as much as Kara is but I also think they are reusing too many previous ideas that didn't work the first time and a villain that is anything but original. At least they didn't have a third issue with her and Kal just sitting around talking about Krypton though.

I loved this issue. I love the art. I loved the writing, although it IS kind of predictable, but it's just so well written, the transitions and the way the dialogue flows. The villain also, while he does seem a bit generic at first, there's something intriguing about him, his humor, his cynical humor gets to me, here's to hoping they can develop him into something awesome.

Funny, I've heard a lot of mostly positive and mostly negative reviews. Everyone seems to be on one polar end or the other.

I was really torn prelaunch about this book. I felt like we had just gone through a huge multi-year renovation with Kara with Gates and Igle... and especially towards the beginning it was amazingly solid. At the same time the character also began to slowly trickle down my favorites list, which combined for a "roll the eyes and sigh" reaction to her new title...

And then I read the first issue and was intrigued. And the second and was amazed. And the third now has me holding a happy smile, with Kara pushing her way back up the list. The art is really a gorgeous factor... and I agree that the story is a touch predictable... but in this instance there is no real negative arising from that factor.

I love this book. Awesome. Can't wait for the next arc (yeah, I'm jumping ahead of myself, but I already know that the current arc is good, I don't need to worry about that anymore).

Five star review of a comic with a young, strong female character. If this was a Marvel title, it would be cancelled.

I really liked it. My only concerns is that they're perhaps making her a bit too oblivious. I understand she's supposed to be confused by her new surroundings, and it makes perfect sense that she should be disoriented, but I still can't help but find it a bit ridiculous how she just blindly followed the bait into a trap.

I can't believe that Clark would let her get into that level of trouble without following her, that didn't make any sense at all which made reading the remainder of the issue hard for me. 2/5

I can't remember why I added this title to my pull list, but I'm glad I did!
