Supergirl #17 - Girl vs. Goddess

3

Supergirl faces Wonder Woman in the latest issue of her ongoing series.

The Good

One of the things I have been enjoying about this series has bee writer Mike Johnson's grasp on Supergirl and who she is. This issue exemplifies the fact that Kara is a reckless, young, broken woman who is passionate about one goal: to bring back her home planet. I think Johnson captures that really well in this issue in the way that Kara's actions are so reckless. She is hard-headed and stubborn and she refuses to listen to reason, I think that's important. It also makes sense that Kara would be acting and feeling in this way since she has lost absolutely everything. Johnson has Kara's character down really, really well there is no question about that.

There were a few good segue's where we get to see exactly what is happening outside of Supergirl's battle with Wonder Woman. We catch a glimpse at the "bigger picture," and although it would have been nice to see more of that, it was still good that some of those moments broke up the fight between Supergirl and Diana.

The Bad

I know that this is not a Wonder Woman comic, but the way she was written even on the very first page of the issue is so out of character that it feels really jarring. In most cases something like this really wouldn't matter since this title isn't hers, but I think it's important here because of the role Wonder Woman plays to the plot as a whole. Here she proposes a counter argument to Kara where she explains that Krypton is gone and "nothing can bring it back."

The symbol on H'el's chest is something that is alluded to in this issue but not really explored. It is something Kara notices very briefly and addresses quickly before she seemingly changes her mind out of the blue. This is what was strange: she had been holding on to her convictions throughout the last three issues of her series and then all of a sudden she flips a switch and changes her mind. I almost felt like she should have been asking a series of questions instead. What does the symbol on his chest mean? Did you lie to me? She should have explored the moment in more detail but she didn't, it just sort of happens that she changes her mind.

We also get this short moment with Lois Lane and Jimmy at the Daily Planet where they relive the same moment twice. It is unclear why the destruction of the sun would cause these characters to relive these moments, to be honest, and it would have been nice to see that explored further.

The Verdict

The bulk of this issue was mostly a fight between Diana and Kara, which is fine, but there should have been a bit more conversation and dialogue between the two characters where Diana would explain what exactly is going on and why helping H'el is a big no-no. At it's core, there were some interesting moments in this issue but in the end it did not make a whole lot of sense. It's difficult to determine exactly how Kara was able to come to her sense so quickly. The fight between she and Wonder Woman could have had a little bit more substance, too.

In the end this issue was not the best, but it was not so bad either. I think the writer depicted Kara very appropriately. It makes sense that she is uneasy and a little bit reckless in some scenes. The art in the issue was also very good and the layout of the panels (particularly the action scenes) were really well executed. This is not really the best place to pick up the story. If you have been following the 'H'el On Earth' story arc then you might enjoy it, but I personally felt this to be one of the series' weaker issues.

Look this book is Diana vs Kara and it was fair enough. Second, Diana preaches a lot in her own book, (not to mention pushed out by a host of other Godly players) and I frankly don't think we needed that stuff from her book. I want to see a throw down. We got it.

I liked this, 4 stars for me too.

And about how Kara come to her senses so quickly by the end, I thought it had something to do with the Lasso.

3 stars for me. I agree with a lot of things that you say, but the art wasn't my favorite. This is one of the series' weaker issues.

I seriously hope H'el survives at the end cause Superman needs a villain that can match him in abilities, and wits.

This issue was fine. The art just takes getting used to, and I've seen worse. MUCH worse before.

3 from me. It could have been a 4 but like Babs said, it just kept glossing over what could have been really interesting plot points, this isn't the first time I've picked up on this; I can only hope these things are answered in the conclusion.

What happened to the original art? Did they change it for any specific reason? (Superboy suffered as well with the Annual and last week's issue iirc?)

The only plot point that they glossed over was Jimmy and Lois, which, to be fair, shouldn't have even been there. As for Kara having a change of heart, it was clearly due to the Lasso's effects on her. Diana said Kara always had doubts about H'el, that he was lying to her, and the Lasso further established those.

I don't think this was a bad issue for Wonder Woman. In a way it seemed far more in keeping with the Wonder Woman we've always known than the one we've gotten so far in the new 52. The art I think detracted a lot from her though as she was drawn as being extremely haughty yet her dialog did have that tone.

Is anyone else getting annoyed by the fake news casts in the back of the recent issues? Maybe its just because we're bombarded by news 24/7 these days but I find them extremely unnecessary and, for lack of a better word, dumb.

Honestly it was the weakest in the cross over. The main story progressed very little. No sign of Superboy or Oracle!..At this point of stage, readers want a more mature plot. The fight between Supergirl and WW felt kind of unnecessary. The art is good, but Mahmud Asrar's Superman is way skinnier than other's versions.

Sara, the reason Jimmy and Lois repeat their conversation is because the Oracle is affecting the fabric of space-time. Same reason why Cyborg's chronometer gets messed up on the next page.

The art is a bitter pill but it has improvrd. Its still kind of cartoon but it has its plus also. Kind of like cliff changs wondrrwoman. I actually liked the art in the last comic as supergorl went against flash. The color schemes were the star of that comic. The fight betweem the two stunk though. Hope the Ww Sgirl fight is beter. But it doesnt sound like it according to the reveiw.

@The Stegman: It didn't handle the fact that he's been hiding the House of El crest on his chest from her very well, granted, they might be saving that for later, but she went from doubting it to forgetting it immediately.

When she was being affected by the Lasso, so much more could have been said, or shown. She didn't seem to care that she was betraying Kal or her Earth; nobody has touched on why it's such an easy decision for her to turn her back on it so fast.

It didn't handle the time shifting, which has the potential to prove H'el right for trying to save Krypton, so glossing over it was really frustrating.

Furthermore to that, when H'el claimed his case, it was totally ignored without reason by everyone. Nobody said why he was wrong, just that he was wrong.

It glossed over the entire Oracle element of the story. He's one of the big reveals and should have been a huge part of this issue now that he's active.

I just felt like it touched a lot of parts of the story that could have been really interesting. It's frustrating to see good topics get picked up and then dropped immediately.

Yes! In some of the darker books it comes off as completely ridiculous.

I would think the moment where time repeats itself is due not to the sun collapsing, but the unstable TIME MACHINE that H'el is using.

And Supergirl DID flip a switch inside her head. She's had these doubts all along, but she buried them because she had such a strong emotional connection to Krypton that she NEEDED to cling to hope. But when Wonder Woman got her in the Lasso of Truth, it forced her to stop lying to herself and face all these doubts she buried. It made perfect sense for her to turn on him so quickly like that.

And I'm kind of baffled at how you think Wonder Woman wasn't written well, she seemed very in character this whole issue.

I was just glad to see someone smack some sense into Kara, it's been overdue for about 17 issues. Both her and Powergirl have so much potential and none of it is being used. It's a sad time for Kara fans.

@toptom: Just finished reading the issue. Are you referring to Superman all of a sudden looking pre-New 52 while wearing his underwear outside of his pants? Yet the previous panel he is not...that is distracting, but not as distracting as this mysterious symbol H'el has on his chest that just disappears and reappears at random throughout the 3 "super" books. Ugh.

ahahah yes! it is strange no one has talked about that...it was even an huge panel!

however i think that they will explain us why h'el 's simbol is appeared. i think that he has hide it with his mental powers all the time in order to obtain kara's trust..but at the end that was not more relevant to him.

still the red underpant are hard to cancel from everyone memories...at the beginning i almost didn't notice them!

@toptom: LOL I have heard of someone being hit so hard that you knock the pants off of them. In this case H'el hit Superman so hard to the point of actually adding additional clothing to him!!! Wow!! Now that's a punch! LOL :)

Just read Supergirl 17 & Superman 17 and man how I wish Rocafort could be on both titles. How he draws Supergirl (in superman) is wayyyyyy better than how Supergirl is drawn in her ongoing (by Asrar? I think)

Sadly, I don't make the rules, but if I did....
