Steed and Mrs. Peel #1 - London Falling

3

The original Avengers are back and their world is about to get completely turned upside down.

The Good

To say this issue starts off with a bang would be an understatement. Let's just say that a war has been declared and it doesn't look like the 'bad guys' are playing around. What we start off with is a major incident that you can't just walk away from. It's a pretty bold move and a great hook to get you invested in this series.

Even if you're unfamiliar with the characters in the original Avengers TV show, you should be able to quickly get a feel for what's going on. We're immediately thrown into a dire situation. The scenes contained in a small area give a frantic feeling which leads to a pretty big set up. I'm not sure where the story is going to go but there definitely is something to see here.

Will Sliney's art captures the feel of the old television series. The characters are recognizable. The story calls for a....interesting look in terms of the location. The way the issue ends will have you wondering what the heck is going on.

The Bad

For readers not familiar with the characters, this is a pretty big leap in terms of a first issue. There was a previous series but as a number 1, you'd expect to be able to know what's going on. The story starts out running and you barely have a chance to know who is involved before seeing what is going on. With minimal experience myself, the angle of the story does seem like a bit of a departure. Unless everything is not as it seems, this issue is being pretty bold in what happens.

The Verdict

If you aren't familiar with the characters in The Avengers TV show, it's possible you won't be reading this comic. With Mark Waid and Boom! Studios involved plus the fact that this is a first issue, you might be willing to take a chance and try something different. The problem is, this issue begins with a crazy opening. There isn't much of a chance to introduce the characters and new readers will quickly feel lost trying to catch up with all the chaotic elements of the story. This definitely is a game-changer in the world of Steed and Mrs. Peel. There is a big enough of a hook in wondering how the series will continue from here to make you come back. Throw in the appearance of certain characters and the insane development at the end, fans will be sure to return for the next issue.
