The Good
When Dynamite Entertainment offered an update to the Bionic Man, it was good. It made sense and we saw some cool stories. This series is going back to the original feel of the television series. Geared as “Season Six,” Jim Kuhoric picks up where the TV show ended. That means that Steve Austin has been the Six Million Dollar Man for some time now. With the world changing around them, we see Steve and Oscar are about to face a different sort threat—one that involves bureaucracy.
With the changing world, there is the advancement of other technology. It’s a great twist on the series and we also see the debut of a new nemesis that was previously only seen in merchandise for the show. This will offer the perfect opponent for Steve.
Juan Antonio Ramirez captures the feel of the show. There’s definitely a 70s feel which is fantastic. It’d be too easy to try to modernize the characters but if they are truly determined to grasp the feel of the show and continue where it left off, this is a crucial bit to maintain.
The Bad
Parts of the story moves quickly. While it is cool for a situation to come about where Steve has to face a shark, it felt like the situation requiring him to be in this location happened quickly. At the same time, other things are happening quickly in Washington. It’s a little convenient that Steve isn’t around as this new development takes place.
Some of today's readers, not overly familiar with the show, might find the 70s feel a little dated.
The Verdict
We’re off to a nice start in this series continuing where the TV show left off. Jim Kuhoric captures the feel of the 70s time period and Juan Antonio Ramirez’s art ors it justice as well. We have a couple of big problems that the Bionic Man will have to deal with. It threatens everything he’s used to and it will be fun to see how things develop from here. Fans of the show should not miss out on this. Even if you haven't watched the show, you could jump in and catch up.
