Red Hood and the Outlaws #1 - I Fought the Law and Kicked its Butt

4

Following true to the idea of 'The New 52,' this is a new beginning for our characters with some ties to past events. The characters might not be the same but this is a really fun book.

It's a new beginning with characters we are familiar with. Get ready for a tiny bit of controversy as older fans might have some concerns. Reading with an open mind is the key to understanding this issue.

The Good

In some of 'The New 52' books, we've been thrown in the middle of the action without really knowing what's been going on or what history still holds. Other books make it clear where a long-time reader stands in terms of continuity of the book. The idea of 'The New 52' is to be accessible to new readers and to make the characters fresh. Red Hood and the Outlaws focuses on three characters we know, Jason Todd, Roy Harper and Starfire. The core of the characters is still there but they are tweaked in a way that adds some spice to them.

This is where you must decide what your stance on the book will be. Yes, the characters are undergoing some changes. That's over and done with. Now is the time to read the book and see how it comes across to you. As a fan myself of all three characters, some of the changes did make me cringe a little. But the feeling of fun in this book. That's what comics are about. Jason and Roy's interaction comes across as a high octane buddy/cop blockbuster movie. The action is intense and it's over the top. Jason Todd has a strong following and some might have concerns but reading him here worked for me.

What about Starfire? Let's come back to her.

Lobdell has the team dynamic down. He has the witty conversations needed to make this capture the mood the book is going for. Rocafort's art is a sight to be seen. Ever since I first saw him on Top Cow's Madame Mirage, I've been keeping an eye on his work. He gives the characters a certain level of...sexiness. We know Jason has shown signs of his viewpoint on things. And now Starfire is expressing herself as well.

The Bad

With that all said, I still have to address the changes, especially with Starfire. I first started Reading Teen Titans during Marv Wolfman and George Perez's run. Of course my memory and the nostalgia will have an influence on my thoughts. Surprising, I can look past the minor tweaks to Jason Todd. The more I think about Starfire's changes, the more I'm willing to see how things play out. Am I completely happy with the changes? No. But at some levels, it makes a little sense. I've enjoyed Lobdell's writing in the past so I will see where things go. There is a lot that isn't said in this issue. We can't just jump to conclusions.

The Verdict

I had to give this some thought after reading. There are some changes made to the characters but there comes a time when we need to let go and just read the stories. That's what they are. Comics are meant to be fun and I did have some fun while reading this issue. Lobdell is making some bold decisions that are bound to get people talking. The important thing is to read and form your own decision. I can accept the changes and I'm curious to see where this book will go. There is some interesting hints/set up given here. Jason is proving to be his interesting old self. We don't know the full story prior to this issue. That's also part of the fun, seeing how they all got here. Rocafort's art is amazing and captures the essence of the characters. Starfire's changes are interesting but part of 'The New 52' is about change. I read the issue a couple times before deciding on my rating. It was fun, it was over the top, a good fresh start with some interesting changes that I will need to see how they play out.

I forgot that Rocafort did the art for Madame Mirage, the art in that book was amazing. This just got placed firmly on my radar. I think I'll read it in trade though.

I am so excited to get my hands on this and the rest of the 52! Thanks for the review, you definitely made up my mind that this will have to be read with the others already on my list. Especially, if Rocafort gave them a level of sexiness! Hip-Hip-Hooray for Sexiness! Ha ha.

One more time, thanks for the read. I loved it and I am ten times more excited for the series than before!

I read this somewhere and thought it had an excellent point on Starfire.

I am sorry, but can someone explain to me how this is so radically different from her old characterization?
Because she is being portrayed as eye candy? In the first issue of Judas Contract (Tales of the Teen Titans 42) she is posing in a tiny bikini for a film festival photo while everyone drools over her. She learns languages by kissing people. Her old costume is marginally more covering than her new one. She came from a clothing optional society and would randomly unknowingly flash people much to Dick's shock. So Jason is bragging about banging her is horrible, but Beast Boy's endless sexual harassment was all fun and pure? She has always been fan service for comic fan boys. The only difference now is she is forward with wanting sex. Heaven forbid the sexy woman actually want and get sex. And yes I know there is more to her character than fan service, but the fan service has been there since day one.
Because she is violent? In New Teen Titans she was always struggling with her warrior nature and the desires of her friends for her not to kill. Now that she is surrounded by people who do kill, and in Jason's case encourages it, it makes sense she would be more violent.
Because she does not remember her old friends? Now that I can see as being annoying. Loosing all those old friendships due to memory loss is annoying, but I would not call it character assassination.

The new Starfire is degrading and insulting, period. It's one thing to be one with your sexuality and be comfortable with it, it's another thing to pretty much be a whore. And that's how she's written. Fanservice is one thing, but Starfire is currently depicted as an unappealing whore.

Sex appeal was done right in Catwoman. Here, it's just trashy. Porn trashy. Even if it did elect a chuckle from me, I can't escape the truth.

I completely agree with Outside_85 and ThanosIsMad. I was seriously disappointed in how Starfire was depicted in this issue. It's true that Starfire has always been a source of fanservice, but having her sleep around with any nearby male is something else entirely. I was already ticked that she was made to sleep with Captain Comet out of boredom in R.E.B.E.L.S. What's worse is that now she has a hard time even distinguishing the men she's slept with. I especially did not like that Starfire did not remember her past with the Titans. Other than Starfire's new character, I thought the issue was pretty cool.

Even if Starfire isn't my favorite character, probably never will be, she has been degraded to a slut. Sleeping with every man she see, forgetting her time with the Titans?

This new Starfire is obviously just for fanservice.

Oh no!!! She randomly sleeps with people and throws them away afterwards without emotional connections. It's like she's a guy or something. Puh-lease she is basically Bruce Wayne's public playboy persona or Olliver Queen. Don't hear anoyone complaining about the way they act. Double Standards.

@Godlike130: Just had a thought...what if the tables are turned gender-wise and either Jason or Roy start having feelings towards Starfire but she doesn't return them? That'd make an interesting dynamic, guys ending up not acting like stereotypical guys. This has potential.

I was really hoping Sara would review this issue, so I guess I'm waiting for the podcast to hear her talk about this one, which I'm looking forward to. I thought this was a fun book overall, but just going by the first issue, if they took Roy and Kori out of this book, it would be just as, if not more enjoyable. I won't dwell on what they did to Kori, I'm not a fan of, that is all. The biggest winner of this book is the art, it's gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous, I can't get over it, yet it's on this book. I'm not sure I'll follow this one, but right now, thought it's still too early to tell, Roy seems useless and Kori seems like a deus ex machina who's just there incase or to sleep with Jason and Roy to fill pages, like I said though, could all change. Really torn on this.

Starfire has always been risque, that's what she's remembered for. Still applies it seems. Is Essence the "Asian" character that he Scott Lobdell referred to in his question/answer tidbit here on ComicVine?

Except I don't remember Bruce Wayne actually doing the deed most of the time. And if he does, a majority of the time he's involved with the woman. I don't read enough Oliver Queen to know what he does, but what I have read of him he wasn't even involved. Also, when they put up a womanizing front, it's exactly that, a front.

At any rate, a male behaving the same way would be the same thing people are calling her now. /shrug

I was looking forward to this issue and it let me down with Starfire alone. I liked how it started out, I enjoyed the way it was, I wouldn't have minded a thing between Starfire and Jason or even with Roy, but her behavior is so contrary to the character she was. And to add icing to the cake the worst part is that she doesn't remember nor does she seem to care about her past relationships which defined her pre-Flashpoint.

It's less about what she does and more about how she was depicted doing it. The whole issue made Starfire seem like an object, not a person. In every Starfire portrayal I've read, regardless of her being forward with her sexuality or not, she had a personality, like Catwoman crossed with Wonder Woman.

Here, her characterization would be better suited for a porn. And if I wanted porn characterization, I'd watch porn.

I think you're grossly misunderstanding what's being debated here. Mostly canon.

Lobdell and almost every other creator at DC stated that this event was not a complete reboot and that several things would still remain in continuity.  Lobdell said it himself that the original Titans and the NTT era are still canon, that Kori's relationship was Dick still happened.

But this is almost a writer having his cheesecake and eating it too--or wearing it as a hat--because there is no way that this current depiction of Kori in this issue is a natural evolution off of the very close knit family that was NTT.   Lobdell may just be writing the incarnation of Koriand'r that he wants for the book, while indulging fans that her past remains "intact".

Still, you would have to crudely hack away at the very core qualities of her person to get those two histories to fit, as well as erase or diminish other types of relationships she had with her previous team.  I mean, Dick aside, her and Donna were like sisters.

Unless this is an actual plot point and the story reveals she has selective AMNESIIIIIAAAAAAAA, then I'll be very disappointed with her role in this book.

And I say this as a fan of many former Wildstorm female characters who take casual sex with the freedom and blunt honesty that companies like DC only entitle the male heroes with.  However, for them, its done within context and complete characterization.

Even before the relaunch, Kori was a character that always owned her sexuality no matter how some outlooks wanted to punish her for that.  However, Kori was also a heroine who owned her own emotions and was always willing to take risks and make connections with people despite a cruel upbringing. I sincerely hope the writing is not removing the latter just so that they can show how "liberated" she is.  To me, that's a very strawman approach to modern sexuality and feminism.

@Nwing77:

I'm all for canon and the continuity thing, but at the same time I feel that is what DC is trying to do: prune away the overgrown hedges that their mythology and stories have become. I'm only familiar with the Titans from the cartoon (which I know isn't anywhere near canon), so I'm not familiar with who Starfire WAS, but as to who she IS, she reminds me of characters like Vampirella and Lady Death, who were meant to be eye candy. Perhaps she'll develop into a new kind of character, but I do agree with you the whole "mind wipe" thing was a little TOO convenient (kinda like the "Turns out that the hero who died was a clone" or "It was all a dream" cop-outs that comics resort to sometimes).

So from the sounds of the review there are a lot changes, some good some bad, that previous fans will react to. As someone who is brand new however would this be considered one of the more accessible new 52?

It isn't the fact that Starfire slept with both Jason and Roy in the first issue that is the main problem, I think. It is the complete abandonment of her character's previous morals and deep personal relationships (like Dick and Donna) to the point where she doesn't care about anyone or anything and really seems to just want to have sex and be entertained that I feel is the larger problem. You would expect more understanding from someone who has already been on Earth for 3-4 years probably. Those along with her retconned memory are some very drastic changes that do sully her previous characterizations as someone who cared deeply for her friends and loved ones. It is disappointing to see, since I always hate seeing women objectified, and I say that as someone who isn't even a fan of her character.

I like the book a lot, except then where starfire was like "lets go have sex lolol" Being a slave, was she simply saying that because she was treated as a sex object back then? BUUUT! I think the explanation for that is because she has lost her memories..so uh, if not, I dont think she'd even say that lol.

I enjoyed the issue. Jason and Roy's interactions were amusing and I want see what connection Jason has with this All Chaste group. Obviously he was part of it at some point. The art was great and I'm definitely interested in seeing what happens next.

As for Starfire, I have a feeling they'll touch on her lack of memory. Seems like it'd be a plot point since, as people mentioned, Roy would have known about Kory's tendency to forget about humans she's interacted with. There is definitely going to be plot involving her with the comment from that guy who was sent the picture of her. If it ends up this isn't a plot point that will be expanded on, and is indeed just a complete change, then that kinda sucks, but I'd like to believe there's more to it than that.

I liked the book could be a lot of fun dug the A-Teams vibe. Yes Starfire is a bit of a whore but really was she that different prior to the New 52? Not really maybe she wasn't as up front about hey come sleep with me but for her NEW character it makes sense. They basically say her species dosen't understand humans or emotions so why should she care if she sleeps with Roy Todd Steve or Jerry?

Love the art in this book. I haven't followed the Red Hood character since Jason came back from the dead but I thought he was more of a sociopath. Though the line about how Gotham makes you crazy was a good enough explanation for him to suddenly be a goofy buddy movie type of character.

Hopefully Starfire's memory loss turns into a main plot. I didn't mind her that much, the only thing I didn't like about this book was whatever the Red Hood was doing while Kori was with Roy. It seemed like some supernatural stuff whereas I was hoping for more of an espionage type of story especially after the first scene. I couldn't really follow what was going on with him and wasn't interested enough to re-read. I guess it wasn't supposed to make sense since this issue ended with "to be explained..." instead of "to be continued..."

This could be a great book since the art is fantastic and the banter is well done. It's just a bad-ass version of the Teen Titans I guess.

Bruce Wayne and Queen are'nt motivated by sex she is 100% that's why she was there and it was made clear ,think about what you're talking dude.

The book was going fine with Roy and Jason,i was loving it until Kory showed up,completly pointless. It's a good thing i'm not a huge Kory fan or i'd be throwing a tanturm.Art was awesome,Starfire's character has suffered a LOT,kick her out she's not needed anyway.

This issue was disgusting, I don't care if starfire was eye candy before. With the relaunch they could have changed that and made her a less degrading character. Instead they decided to make her costume even more revealing, and make the relationship between her and dick mean nothing (because all humans smell the same or something). A woman can want sex and be sexy, but to just make her a sexual object is just stupid. I am not picking this book up next week.

Oh no!!! She randomly sleeps with people and throws them away afterwards without emotional connections. It's like she's a guy or something. Puh-lease she is basically Bruce Wayne's public playboy persona or Olliver Queen. Don't hear anoyone complaining about the way they act. Double Standards.

Exactly!

I'm hating this new Starfire...

What I find disgusting is everyone calling Starfire a whore, showcasing the very slut-shaming misogyny that tends to be rampant in fanboyium. Really people? Yes the art was a little cheesecakey...yes maybe it would have been more fair if Roy and Jason were equally objectified, but Starfire in this issue came across to me as a woman who knew what she want and went after it. You notice she was the one who propositioned Roy, not the other way around. I mean gee, God forbid a woman should be sexual and sleep around if she wants. Why do I get the feeling that if she were a male character like Oliver or Bruce this would be a nonissue? As for her memory loss...did you people stop to think that might be a plot point later on in a few issues, that some outside force might be messing with her memories, or that the whole "alien weird memory thing" might be an excuse because her past with the Titans and with Dick is too painful so she's faking it to avoid talking about it?

Hah, it was an oddly offensive thing to say, huh? He probably didn't mean for it to be insulting, but rather, wanted Babs to review it as she reviewed The Lost Days and so was highly familiar with Jason.
I thought you did a great job, if it's any consolation!
