New Avengers #3 - Infinity

5

Will the Illuminati "lose themselves" in their effort to save the planet from being destroyed?

The Good

There comes a point where a hero might have to ask himself, 'to what lengths will I go in order to save myself and those I love?' This is the underlying theme of this issue. To what lengths will these characters go to save themselves and their planet, and will that mean they'll have to abandon everything they stand for? Will they allow themselves to get to that point? Where do you draw the line?

Writer Jonathan Hickman continues to throw surprise after surprise at us, making this a very interesting read. Not only is he crafting a story that digs deep into the psyche of these different characters, but the scope of the tale he is telling is tremendous. The circumstances seem larger than life and as a result, so does what appears to be the only viable solution to this conflict. The problem is, not everyone agrees. The two page spread where Captain America is giving the rest of the Illuminati his opinion on the solution to their massive problem is where things get really interesting. There is a lot of raw emotion in this scene and it is quite obvious that Steve Rogers does not take the current situation very lightly. The interaction between these characters is fantastic not only because it contains a well written monologue, but also because it forces the hand of certain characters in a really shocking way.Certain individuals might just do the unthinkable, but was it the right move? Only time will tell. Clearly, there are multiple layers to this story that make it a really entertaining read.

I think what most impressed me about this series is the way that Hickman can tell a story that is exciting and shocking without there being any crazy action scenes. The focus of this issue are the implications of ones actions. Every action has a reaction, and the things we see unfold should not be taken lightly. It will be interesting to see if these characters not only come to terms with a solution, but if they will betray their respective moral compass in order to do so.

The Bad

I think the only moment I wasn't really crazy about was the scene where Beast gains Xavier's Infinity Gem and Black Bolt randomly shows up. I understand that the other five gems would lead to the sixth, but I think the entrance was more jarring than anything. Anyway, this was a really minor detail so I can't really complain.

The Verdict

If you are new to this series I definitely do not recommend starting with the third issue. This story is complex and the scope is too big to just dive into the third issue without having at the very least read issue #2. Issue two features a fantastic explanation of what is happening and I truly believe it is worth giving a look. Hickman knocks it out of the park with this issue. Not only is the dialogue well written and interesting, but you can really sense that there is a lot of weight and emphasis being placed on the shoulders of these characters and their actions. What they do is important to the overall scope of the story and I think that is really what makes the reading experience interesting. This doesn't feel like a throw-away story, it feels larger than life. It deals with concepts that are mind boggling and it is presented in a way that is entertaining and really organized. Artist Steve Epting returns to the third issue to deliver truly stunning pencils. There is a lot going on in this issue, and a lot of emotion, and I think Epting did a fine job capturing both those qualities in this comic. Overall this was extremely well done and I find myself anxiously anticipating more.

Fantastic issue. Epting is a terrific artist and the story has a ton of potential. Marvel Now is knocking it out of the park with this, Avengers, Hulk, and Thor.

I read all the issues in the store and found all of them boring. same with Avengers. Guess I'm not a big fan of Hickman's writing style. :(

I'm just wondering if it's going to be brought back up later on in the series.

Specifically for Tony and Strange wiping Steve's mind, though I'm sure everyone had a say in it.

after i read the story... somehow i remember "identity crisis" and probably mixed with "war world hulk"... this issue has potential for a big story, indeed... but (yes there is but)... to blame cap for the decision they already took togather ... its kind of feel silly (or maybe childist) and unresponsible...but oh right, its the iluminati... all mighty and greatest superhero of marvel in secret chamber. its their trendmark.

This book is trash IMO. It's always the same sh*t, the world is in danger! oh no, someones gotta save it. I did myself a favor & stopped getting this series. Frankly I can't stand sitting through another one of Reed Richard's boooooooooooooooring lectures. I tried, I gave it a chance but to me it seems marvel is just ripping us off. Think about it, how many Avengers, X-Men & Spider-Man titles do they have???? How many Justice League books are there? Thought so.

@MikeStark: Damn troll! Superhero comics has been about saving the world, for what 70 YEARS or so. You don't like it, don't buy and read it. But please spare us from the whole attention whore bit where you feel the need to go on a comics site to write a "snarky" comment about how bad a book and it's publisher is, just to get some attention. Begone! Back under the bridge with you!

As far as the issue goes, it keeps getting better and better just as I expected from Hickman. And how they handled Cap, that's probably gonna come back in a big way to bite them in the ass.

P.S. Please spare me the "don't feed the trolls" comment, I did it on purpose.

JL, JLD, JLA, JLA/Vibe... okay, Avengers clearly win (or lose depending on your point of view) this one. However, there's not such a big difference between Marvel and DC milking their cow. DC's also focusing more on Batman, Superman, JL, and GL titles than their other titles. Marvel, of course, wins this race with the A & X titles. Unfortunately it's too easy for them with the success of the movies, to sell these titles.

Try Image, Valiant, Dark Horse, and Dynamite instead.

It works for me.

Nonetheless, New Avengers easily is the best Avengers titles of Marvel Now imho. I like its slow pace and where it's getting to. Can't wait to have this issue.

The covers, especially the variant, are brilliant.

Thor and this, and a little bit of Hulk.

Hickman is a long term arc writer....some of his issues come across as slow but he throws a LOT of plot points at you in almost every issue without you really even knowing it until ten issues down the line you realize that something is happening because of something little in issue 2....this and Avengers will be much better to read once the he's done with however many issues he plans on doing

I really liked the issue. But I don't see what the big deal is.

Why do these heroes think they need to become villains? They could you know, just tell Doom or Thanos about the problem, then not be a hero for a day - let either villain destroy a universe without interfering and problem solved, on to the next arc.

It's that that simple. It's continuous, so destroying one, doesn't stop the next one from coming.

Don't care for Epting's Beast with the glowing eyes and all. But other than that I can safely say New Avengers is my favorite of the relaunched Avengers titles. Loving the cast and the dire story.

Outstanding issue. Almost perfect.

The one thing holding it back for me (and it's possible I'm just not understanding what he's saying)...

...but what is with Beast disagreeing with Steve? Hank's heart has always been as big as his brain. It seems out of character to me to disagree.

Saying "Are you seriously asking a mutant what he's prepared to do to stave off extinction" sounds too... Cyclops like to me. Doesn't feel true to Beast's character.

Am I misunderstanding, or just plain wrong, or am I right?

I liked Beast's little bit about "are you really asking a mutant how far I'm willing to go to protect my people?" especially considering he's got some experience with the whole "destroying a planet/universe to save my own" thing...remember Ghost Boxes? yeah, Beast has his girlfriend Agent Brand fire a massive S.W.O.R.D. laser through a ghost box, destroying the reality on the other side...... the blood of billions is on his hands, and he's mad at Scott? Ugh, Beast's hypocrisy is staggering.

Did anyone think Namor was...100% right? He has Skylar White syndrome. He's 100% correct in everything he says, but people just hate him because he's saying it to someone they love.

Why SHOULD Steve's soul be continually spared at the cost of so many? He ought to know better than to believe this decision would be arrived at lightly. I am all for trying your damndest to find a way that has little to no bloodshed, but he just comes across as MASSIVELY naive here. "What if an incursion occured in 10 mins?" "We'd stop it."

No, you'd WANT to. What if you can't? Steve doesn't get that and he came across as annoyingly ignorant here. Maybe it was fear setting in that he knew they were right. I dunno.

This is what I was thinking. Beats gets all mad at Scott for being willing to do what it takes, for being willing to mess with universal powers like the Phoenix to help people, but then Beast decides to use the infinity gems, which have been shown to cause madness and instability in other characters in the past, and is willing to possibly destroy another universe to save ours? Super annoying and hypocritical. I had assumed Beast was going to join Cap in the moral resistance.

Very well enjoyed issue and has really got me excited. I was equally excited during his Fantastic Four run however the ending of that run was bad in my opinion. (Nathan from the future using Galactus as his herald to destroy the mad celestials??). I didnt care for it because no original elements we created just a mash up of current status quo characters and science fiction elements. So yes, so far its just as fantastic as his lead up to his FF run however I am skeptical if he can create an enjoyable ending which isnt a cop out seeing as though the story is so high concept. Need i remind people of Matt Fraction's Defenders ending. (And yes i realise it was cut short due to cancellation however a crap ending is a crap ending.) That being said - It is easier to build a story up than it is to build a story up and then tie the final knot.

Just some points about this issue:

I love Cap, but I'm glad they got rid of him. He doesn't fit the rest of them - he's a soldier and a battlefield leader, not a ruler like the rest of them. That being said, it was quite painful to see everyone turn on Cap. I'm guessing that this is gonna come back to haunt them later...Marvel Brother Eye anyone?

Someone on the CBR forums had a theory that since Cap had the Time Gem, he might have foreseen what the others had planned for him. Maybe that's why the Time Gem was the only one that vanished? Pure speculation...but one never knows.

I think Hickman really wrote what he said. He stated that NA would be 'dark' while Avengers would be 'light', and so far it's proving to be very true. I think this issue really starts the snowball that the NA will keep going to darker and darker solutions. This book feels hopeless and desperate in comparison to Avengers.

Unlike Bendis' Illuminati, Hickman's really feels like a group of men who rule the world in secret. The situation that they're faced with is a universe-shattering thing that only they can handle.

I like the intertwining parts between NA and Avengers. They read like companion pieces almost.

The fact that your in a position where you feel you need to 'fight back' and need to mind your language so moderators don't ban you should be telling you something about the way you've been handling things thus far. Seems to be sinking in a bit at last then? The forums should be about friendly, reasoned debate, not a warzone. I may have been a bit sarcastic in my last post and @sleepbutnodream may have been rude, but you got to ask yourself why that's happening. Not sinking at all. I keep myself positive with my head held high so no one can drag me down to their level. We'll it's not my fault it's a warzone. It's also not my fault these kids are allowed internet access, having my own opinion that differs from others? Definitely not my fault & is something I will NEVER apologize for. Why is that happening? I already told you, people can't handle a differing opinion. Because it breaks their bubble. Get used to it I say! This is the internet where every one can have their own opinion & this is life, you don't like it, then you can ignore it among other things they can do. It's a free world where anyone can post whatever they want. I am a reasonable individual. I don't care if you don't respond back. Why that's happening? Again, it seems very likely they can't handle a differing opinion so they have to attack me verbally because that's the only thing they know how to do.

The ending of this issue made me sad.

Also interesting how the time gem vanished.
