National Comics: Eternity #1 - Kid Eternity

5

Christopher Freeman, a coroner, has the ability to talk to the dead. Can he use his ability to solve a murder?

The Good

I love the fact this book exists. Although it's only a one-shot and not a whole mini-series, I'm glad to see some of these lesser known characters get their own mini-spotlight in the New 52. I was extremely impressed with everything in this issue. It's a character I'm not familiar with, yet I felt right at home and not alienated thanks to the writing of Jeff Lemire.

Teaming up with Lemire on this book is the art of Cully Hamner and Derec Donovan with Val Staples on colors. The art is incredibly crisp and stands out. The opening page, alone, will drag you in as we see Christopher laying down in a close up, as a splash page.

I loved how this book flowed and the overall story. It's a great (re)introduction to a character, his world, and his powers, and it will leave you wanting a lot more. It may come off as slow to some, but I feel it's paced incredibly well for this book and story. At it's core, it is a detective story, and it needs to have that point A to point B to point C structure. I would love to see a continuation to this storyline.

The Bad

One small typo. I was surprised it made it past the editor.

The Verdict

This is a great start to National Comics, and although we'll move on to a new character and creative team with the next issue, I hope it stays on this level for the rest of them. I love that this Kid Eternity book exists and I love that DC is bringing back some older characters and making them acceptable to newer readers. The creative team of Lemire, Hamner, Donovan, and Staples is fantastic here, and again, I hope they can do another Eternity book together.

Overall, I highly recommend this book.
