Moon Knight #4 - Sleep

5

Moon Knight continues to be a man of action and takes on another bizarre case.

The Good

How much am I digging this series? I've long loved Moon Knight and felt he's always been a bit of an underdog. It's been great seeing him rise in popularity with this current series. Warren Ellis has been taking an interesting approach to the character. IN a series of self-contained stories, we're seeing Moon Knight take on a variety of different cases. It's a cool feeling not knowing exactly what to expect with each issue. Ellis may be giving us small doses of the character in this format but you can tell he has a firm grasp on who Moon Knight is. Seeing mention of past characters is absolutely wonderful. I have to admit, I didn't think I'd see a reference to Robert Markham.

Declan Shalvey gets to wow us once again as this mission gets a little trippy. The simple matter is, you most likely won't be prepared for the type of battle Moon Knight faces here. Jordie Bellaire's colors takes the story to a new level and supercharges the entire atmosphere. There are some extremely gorgeous pages to be found in this issue.

The Bad

Yes, we know this creative team's days are numbered. Issue six will be the last for Ellis and Shalvey but thankfully Bellaire is staying on.

As for this issue itself, there is that sudden ending feeling we've seen in some past issues. Twenty pages sometimes just doesn't feel like enough. We know the story is going to be resolved but in some cases, like this, it almost feels like it isn't completely. What happens next? Does Moon Knight beat the wrong-doer to a pulp? Does he tie him up for the police? Do the Avengers know he's in town?

The Verdict

Ellis, Shalvey, and Bellaire have done it again. Each issue gives us a new and separate adventure for Moon Knight. Ellis' stories are taking the character, and us, to different and strange places. Shalvey's art along with Bellaire's colors are making this an unforgettable run. As with some of the previous issues, there is a slight feeling of a sudden ending but that's part of the charm of Ellis' storytelling in this series. It almost leaves a little to the imagination and makes you think about the possibilities in what happens next. It might be a different approach to what comic readers are used to but we're getting some trippy stories along with gorgeous art.

Love the new Moon Knight. The stories are very Film Noir and it fits well with the character. This was another great story and very creepy too.

It's very neon noir like it's directed by Michael Mann or Nicolas Winding Refn

I liked this issue better than any of the previous 3. Besides being gorgeous, it was trippy and creepy as hell. I really think this book suffers from it's done-in-one format and 20 page count. I just wanted a little more.

Damn this is good. I'm pissed that the creative team is going to be done with the series but I am so thankful we at least are getting these 6 issues.

Loved the issue, thought the mention of Morpheus was neat. Favorite issue so far, that ending was absolutley perfect.

I agree. Great issue! The villain as a researcher was my only complaint-somewhat overdone in comics

So good. Artwork is amazing, and seriously, what more can you say about Bellaire's colors, just wow.

Also, the first time through I didn't even realize the one page in the middle was an upside down skull exploding with the fungal spores. Caught it my second time through and was blown away again.

Wow....an issue of Sandman starring Moon Knight. Totally crazy in all the best ways. I'm very sad Ellis is leaving so soon to focus on his Tree invasion (snore).

This is such an awesome run. A shame the creative team has to change so soon. Mr. Knight has gotten a lot of play already so I hope we get to see more of the other aspects of Khonshu. Seems like he's got somehwat better people skills than the other ones. It was especially cool when he is able to switch to his aerial specialist in the dream state. Clearly he's crazy enough to pull that off with gusto. Oh you mean queen of colors Joardie Bellaire. A well earned title indeed. Those dreamscapes were tripping me out big time. Crazy how much she shines on a book about a dude with no color on his costume.

I really enjoyed this, but the doctor's actions seemed odd. How could this guy bury someone under his office, but then go out and hire Moon Knight entirely of his own volition and not expect that he might find out? It seemed implausible, like he wanted to get caught, but I didn't get that from the character himself.

@eamon542000: Yea I'm not sure if I invented that term or not lol but I've started using it as a genre for films like Collateral, Drive, Only God Forgives and games like Wolf Among Us and Hotline Miami. So I think Moon Knight falls in to this category.

@owie: I had the same reaction at the end of the book. I enjoyed in how the story unfolded and the surprising way MK reacted to the truth (which we got to find out afterwards), but in hindsight, not the brightest idea the doctor could have had.

As for the new creative team coming in, I am a little worried with Bellaire gone and Smallwood in. Wood I think will do great.

Loved this issue, a very close favourite behind the punk rocker ghosts.

@hislolita: Bellaire is sticking around doing the colours. The artist is leaving with Ellis.
