Martian Manhunter #4 - Alone

5

Pearl finds herself surrounded by Martians!

The Martian invasion of Earth starts to get crazy and with it, comes confusion and chaos. How many Martians are already living with amongst the human race?

MARTIAN MANHUNTER is a chaotic and frantic book that will keep readers on the edge of their seats. The pace never slows down and each issue feels like a race to the finish. However, that's what makes this particular issue great. We're all in the midst of seeing this grand action come together and as the character's eyes become open to the truth, everything seems to come tumbling down upon them. Pearl is being hunted by white Martians. Mister Biscuits and company are taking on a Martian Man-Eater, and something crazy is going on with Phobos, Mars' moon. Without spoiling anything, the ending of the issue is pretty nuts as it really kicks off just how crazy this invasion is truly going to get.

Writer Rob Williams has really crafted something unique to DC comics, featuring familiar characters. This doesn't feel like a DC book. It's darker and reads more like something from Vertigo rather than a DC book giving it a remarkably original feel

Eddy Barrows (pencils), Eber Ferreira (inks), and Gabe Eltaeb (colors) really come off as the backbone of this series, highlighting the tone set by the story. A lot of the credit has to go to Ferreira's inks here. Darkness really envelops this issue and the ink work looks fantastic, especially while working with Eltaeb and Barrows. The characters in this book look great and show a wide variety of emotions, including terrified, and Barrows pencils really give this book the horror look and feel it deserves.

MARTIAN MANHUNTER is a series fans need to check out. It's highly underrated and doing something very different. It's an alien invasion story that grasps on to the horror elements and doesn't let go. This is one of the best books in the DCYou line-up that takes a lot of huge risks that are seeming to pay off. This was another amazing issue. Don't trade wait. Get on this series, month to month.

Martian Manhunter in the shadows guiding Pearl was the highlight of the issue.

Anyone know how this series is doing sale wise?

Also right on for MMH to be "one of the best books in the DCYou line-up" guess the he's too powerful argument is now officially debunked.

@titanbreaker: why do you need to know how it's doing sales wise? If you like it, then buy it. Also, the too powerful argument is just what lazy writers use to make mediocre stories. I think characters like Superman, still has his best stories untold.

This, every issue of MM has been like this for me and the end comes too damn quickly!

Hopefully it's doing well.

His power was never a hindrance to a successful comic imo, people make that so. All that's needed is a good story crafted around him and boy is this one helluva story so far.

@dondave: Well as a Superman fan I am often told by many people the reason he does not get many stories or is always dumped down is because "he is too powerful." When I became a Martian Manhunter fan thanks to the JL/JLU cartoon and I began looking for comics with him as the focus I found a small selection with mostly J'onn serving on a team.

Same story again it was he is too powerful to have good stories written about him. Now this is of course completely wrong as Superman has some amazing stories where he is written as he should be, look at All Star for a good read when he gets even more power-fuller, any who so yeah. This current arc of MMH sounds amazing and I am hoping to get it when I have some spare money, but my point was a good story is being written and look MMH is at full power.

Emotions, characters, setting and the writing itself do the story telling not the power level is what I am getting at here. I am glad this is proving it wrong and am pleased as punch one of the more obscure heroes books is being so well praised.

Sorry for any confusion.

It sells around 20K. It is really in the line before cancellation.

I fear if it doesn't pick up it will probably get cancelled in the next wave.

Just checked and while you are right after the books that just got cancelled I do not think he is going anywhere. MMH is not the worst DC book in terms of sales so he will probably hit 12 issues before a decision is made.

Ιt was already given one chance by DC probably due to good reception. But It won't last more than 12 issues if it doesn't pick up in sales.

And as Cap13 said, GL which sold more was cancelled because it under-performed considering it is a GL title and it had mediocre reception.

DC seems to have more confidence in Martian Manhunter. In the December solicitation they made it a point to note that Martian Manhunter was one the best reviewed books out of DC in years; giving me hope that they will stick with it even if it doesn't have the best sales.

@captain13: That's because GL: Lost Army was telling a finite story. The only way that premise could work long-term would be if the Lanterns stayed lost in Relic's home universe forever. Even Cullen Bunn said that Lost Army was going to be a temporary thing.

Small correction: GL:LA had a very positive critical reception.

What it didn't have was any marketing. Ironically, books like Cyborg and Martian Manhunter that DC heavily promoted aren't doing very well sales-wise. Makes me wonder what would have happened if GL:LA were actually promoted like the other DCYOU books. It's all up to editorial though.

Anyway, I may check MMH out now, but its sales aren't great in comparison to books that have been cancelled. DCYOU seems to have been a failure all around, unfortunately. With this tied to the $2million DC lost, DC seems to be really mismanaged at the moment.

Buy single issues: physical copies.

That's pretty much the short and skinny of it.

Cap, in comic book round up the series has an average of 7.3. And it didn't generate a lot of hype either.
I wouldn't call that very positive.

But I other than that, I agree with the rest.

I just did a blog about managing your pull-list just to tell people to support good low sales titles.

Maybe being said by a staff member would persuade lots of people.

DC needs to invest heavy in good marketing. More so than a throwaway line in solicitations saying the comic is the best reviewed.

They did market MMH if I remember well. It was one of the poster books for DCY.

Only Prez got more press. Which doesn't do well either, despite its quality and original premise.

Absolutely loving the angle they're taking with this story, and the horror element is brilliant. Hopefully more people start picking it up if indeed it is struggling with sales.

I loved this issue...Seeing all these new characters being connected by J'onn Jonzz it's really good.

Mr.Biscuits is amazing, really, after J'onn, the best characters in the Book!Telekinect fights, creepy Martians and a Manhunter in the shadows...I'm in love with this series!

@titanbreaker: Well technically Superman's depowered at the moment for his new direction and MMH has been dead for the past 2 issues and won't be back until December. But I pretty much agree with what you're saying overall. The story, characters and horror themes are demonstrating just how an MMH series can be well written even with J'onn at full power.

@scouterv said:

Oh hell no don't say that, now I'm worried DC are going to do something stupid (as is the norm these days) and cut Martian Manhunter short before the series even gets past 12-15 issues. If Omega Men can be axed with positive reviews, so can MMH's book I guess.

I love this book, but people need to buy it. So anyone out there who likes the MM character and has flicked through a copy, buy it PPLEEASSSE ! Its only $2.99 and arguable its one of the best DC titles out there right now, alongside Batman. We waited long enough for a MM comic, its great so what is stopping DC fans...
