Justice League: Darkseid War Special #1 - Darkseid War: The Darkness Within

4

Grail's history is revealed and Jessica Cruz's future is not set in stone!

Jessica Cruz finds herself in an unfamiliar place and learns some chilling news about Power Ring and its past wearers. Meanwhile, Grail's origin is explored, and just what does she want with Steve Trevor.

While this special issue isn't a completely necessary read for those enjoying the Darkseid War storyline, it does put a lot into perspective, mainly everything and anything involving Grail. Her entire history is highlighted in this issue. Writer Geoff Johns paces out this story exceptionally well. It's really easy to get completely immersed in the story. The Grail story has a lot of room to breathe, even though the Cruz story bookends the entire issue. We get a full, uninterrupted story (ignoring ads, obviously) that has a great flow to it.

As for Jessica Cruz, this issue really grows her as a character, and it's easy to see how she's going to eventually become a member of the Green Lantern Corps, which was announced with DC Rebirth. Her story will generate a lot of excitement, and in addition, it provides a bit more depth to what Power Ring is and how it operates.

There are multiple artists on this issue: Ivan Reis & Joe Prado, Oscar Jimenez, Paul Pelletier and Tony Kordos. The art is solid, and there are not a lot of big differences in styles which can take the reader out of the story. The glue that holds this whole issue, artistically, together is the colorwork of Alex Sinclair. He knows what he's doing and conveys tone through his colors. From front to back, Sinclair is the most consistent thing about this issue, without taking anything away from the other artists.

The Darkseid War Special was fun and gave a lot more depth to both Jessica Cruz and Grail. You don't have to read this if you're following the main storyline, but it's highly recommended, as it fleshes out Grail and Cruz as characters, while building a little bit on the plot. The art is great but Sinclair's colorwork is the shining star here. If you've been loving Darkseid War, check this issue out.

Can't wait, just caught up with Darkseid War last night after tracking down the issue I was missing (nearly drove me insane) and I just picked this up from the store. Flipped through the pages a bit and it looks really good, can't wait to get the chance to read it.

I really enjoyed this.

I do want to say, the Cruz stuff made me really want to read more of her as Power Ring, not quite so much her as a Green Lantern; although I will certainly give it a shot when it is released. Not sure if it's a spoiler, but the stuff inside the ring is what really intrigued me. I want to see more with the past Power Rings and the world inside the ring. I'm guessing that is the closest Earth 3 had to Oa?

Grail wasn't quite as interesting. She is good at being a creepy, but still somewhat attractive villain.

Good character development. Just a few questions left unanswered. How did Grail and her mother live for so long and not age? How did Grail's mother get impregnated by Darkseid and not be loyal to him, or get found out by any other amazons? Why is cyborg in the ring? Who is the true mastermind behind this? I doubt Grail really planed all of this.

This is a good issue. I hope Grail becomes a recurring character in the DCU because she is very interesting.

Finally got to read it, liked it more than I thought I would, Grail and her mother's backstory was very very compelling, and quite unexpected. Actually makes them seem much more sympathetic and three dimensional. Also liked seeing Jessica get some spotlight.

Best part though had to be that last page reveal.

Think the point is more that it's simply Johns doing his usual, 'I ignore what other people have done so I serve my story best'. Plus he appears to have added some weird time-trick on top of this since Grail and Diana were born on the same day, yet we know from Azzarello's run Diana is only 23 while Grail has been around since the Roman Empire.

Isn't this kinda the point where he just hands that task out to someone else... the First Born pops out of a hole in the ground and then falls back down again with her?

The issue actually left us with more doubt than resolving any.

Like, Steve is not the first man to step foot on the Amazon island, than who is? Why does power ring has a central battery within? As Grail clearly miscalculated something, she is probably not behind all these, than who is? What does superwoman's daughter has to do with all these? What did Myrina see the night she escaped the island? And why the hell Joker is also involved?

I forgot that current Diana is as old as she looks, lol Johns doesn't do as much research as he wants fans to believe.

I think Grail is just terrible, she's the new Grayven.

I think the DCYou announcement of a laxer editoral grip was primarily meant to be to Johns' advantage so he can do stuff like this without any of the editors getting their knickers in a twist. Which is why I kinda think when he is done with JL his run will fit into the New 52-era of continuity like a round peg in a square hole, since this isn't the first time he's done something like this... and considering no other title has any involvement in a story featuring 2 villains that brought out massive events on their own.

I agree with that, and when this is over I do expect her to quietly vanish, assuming she survives that is.

I was under the impression that amazons dont age unless they leave the island. Diana and Grail make sense since they are demigods.

I don't see a problem with Grail she hasn't done much to gain hate or like.

So Grail just hates Amazons and Diana for no reason other than '' Oh they gave up the world of man'' all the while Diana is actually trying to bring Amazons back and for some reason Grail hates her...because PLOT !

Not to mention '' Oh I lose control and go full Darkseid but I am gonna save the world '' angle that is just ...stupid. Especially when you have the Anti-life Equation and you USE IT on someone... Some savior you are Grail.

This still gets me,the architects of the first and last Crisis are reduced to this, sheesh. I'm just glad Johns wont be writing anything for a while, though that makes me fearful for DCEU.

She could have been interesting if she were actually unique, but she was just girl Darkseid and after this issue she became a girl Orion who's evil.

It's the lot of all villains, there will always be someone either bigger than you, or you get reduced to silly stories like this... and Darkseid doesn't even get a chair in someone's livingroom...

Or as someone noted: 'Fourth World Raven'

I have had a blast trying to piece this story together. I started back to the comic shop about 1 and a half months ago I only have Justice League 48 and this special. I really am enjoying this book. My questions are why is the Flash a grim reaper, and who is the pregnate chic? Also what tittle is Johns going to be writing in the Rebirth?

@kalai1997: I'm thinking maybe Diana has a male twin and that is what Myrina saw. Which also would explain Steve not being the first man.

Nothing happens in this issue, and either the reviewer doesn't understand what character development is or has a real low bar for it. Jessica Cruz is a great idea for a new Green Lantern and in standard new 52 universe fashion continues to show nothing subtle or intriguing in her actual character while she's sidled with a ridiculously grim-dark backstory. Grail is a non entity and no one should care about what happens to this Steve Trevor anyway because again, he's been underdeveloped and boring throughout the last three years.

I loved the first issue and look forward to the rest. Geoff Johns has created another great story
