Justice League: Rebirth #1 - Fear the Reaper

3

A new Justice League comes together to take on an alien threat.

The Justice League is joined by three new members: Simon Baz, Jessica Cruz, and Superman (the one from the previous Earth). There's a new threat, and it's going to take everyone to bring it down, even if they don't think they're worthy of the role.

This issue of Justice League is all about bringing them together. Writer and artist Bryan Hitch gives these heroes a reason to fight. While the idea that something so large it could take out the planet feels a bit done to death, this is a necessary evil for this issue. The overall story and concept works well, especially for the Rebirth brand. It's very new reader friendly and is a great introduction to these characters. Hitch does a stellar job when it comes to defining this version of Superman though. His scenes with his wife, Lois, were some of the highlights of the issue.

The problem lies in the fact that the issue is a bit dull for the older readers. It feels like a typical Justice League story featuring good battling evil with little to nothing else to offer. Three new members come to the team, and they defeat a threat which will probably return in the future. It's one of the weaker titles for Rebirth as a whole, thus far, especially when it comes to delivering a comic for longtime DC fans. This is a story that would have been great as its own arc, rather rushed out for a single issue, in order to really delve into what makes this team great.

When it comes to Bryan Hitch's art. At times, he's doing some spectacular things, like the two pages after the intro page, where this monstrous beast looms over the city. It has great perspective and shows the reader how big (figuratively and physically) a threat this creature truly is. However, there are numerous times, in battle, where everything feels very stiff and the art looks a tad rushed. There's a bit of inconsistency here, which can take the reader out of the story.

Overall, Justice League Rebirth offers a pretty good starter issue for those who have been out of the DC loops for the past few years. However, longtime readers will find this issue to be "more of the same," with very little pushing the new series forward, aside from new members joining the team. It tells a story that feels a bit too large for one issue. It's a down the middle of the road book. It's not bad. It's not great, but it does make us very curious as to where Hitch is going to go from here, and that's a good thing.

Hitch is eh to me. I'll check this out, but man, I wish he wasn't on the main JL title.

I wasn't expecting much since I usually don't like Hitch but this was still an underwhelming issue to me. Hopefully JLA turns out to be something really cool.

It was a pretty standard "forming the team" type of issue and a nice one at that. There were quite a few good characterization moments. I can't wait to see the actual first arc begin in 2 weeks, even though I'll miss Geoff Johns on the book. Also at first I was a little skeptical about this title since I enjoyed Justice League better than Justice League of America during the past year but not that much anymore.

I was all about the Kelly, Casey, Robinson style JLA the proceeded Grant Morrison's seminal run.

As a result, I was never impressed with Johns take on the Trinity when compared to Morrison, Robinson, Rucka, or Alan Moore.

It seems a little unfair now that the second tier are at bat.

I really wish they would put Fabok back on a book. Guy took a while but his art was absolutely epic!

Very underwhelming issue. I didn't like this issue very much , which is unfortunate because it's practically a flagship title . Issue was very bland, especially after the conclusion of darkseid war. I'll give it 2 more issues and drop if it's not to my liking . The rest of this week's rebirth titles were great though

@epyon007: Jason Fabok has confirmed that he is working on something, we just don't know what yet.

@michiel1976: Bryan Hitch will not be the regular artist of the series.

@funrush: Probably in a couple of weeks, either in San Diego Comic Con or during July's solicitations for October books. I can't wait to know more about that myself.

I have decided that I really don't like hitch's writing, at all. I was massively dissapointed by his recent JLA run, and amused that it took him longer than most to create pretty abysmal work. I'll try this for a few months because of Tony daniel

@apokos7: Snyder and Capullo/Fabok? The latter two are notably absent from Rebirth. Assuming Johns is busy doing movie things, but it could be him too.

Yeah, I'm going to cut this some slack because, other than Supes', the Rebirth one shots didn't really impress me beyond peaking my interest. I'm hoping the #1 that really kicks JL off is above average.

And Hitch did bite Mass Effect hard, but there's worse things they can take from. Thing is if he takes this in a Lovecraftian direction don't use the "we kill organics because organics will eventually build machines that will kill organics" excuse. That third game ruined the series.

Just finished reading it and it wasn't too bad. I'm not going to say it was great, but overall of all the Rebirth one-shots (for comparison), it was probably second weakest just in front of Batman. But, I think it was worth a read, honestly.

I don't think tiether bring anything new to the Earth GL line and it should of stopped at Kyle. jessica should of stayed Power Ring which would of made sense and Baz "OK"

Although I agree that Jessica would've been better as Power Ring, considering she's more of her own character and distinguishes herself from other male lanterns, but lots of these issues here comes from the fact that she may not get as much support among readers. DC looks at the Green Lantern brand as a more valuable choice to attempt to appeal both existing readers and new readers alike.

I'm going to give this title a chance but wasn't overly impressed here. Honestly, might be one of the weaker Rebirth titles I have read yet. It will improve with Tony Daniels on art when #1 kicks off, but I'm hoping the writing is more intriguing.

What's wrong with Baz & Cruz? I like them so far. Baz is impulsive. Cruz is is anxious. He wants to be in the vast freedom of space. She wants to be confined to the solitude of her apartment. And together they make a good team.

Boring. I'll pick up the next issue but I'm not expecting much. What I really want to see is the new/old Superman interacting with the League so for that to not happen is very disappointing. Hopefully the next one is better or I'll just wait until Trinity comes out.

My favorite REBIRTH books so far have been:

Detective Comics surprised me by how much I liked the team feel.

Action Comics love having Pre52 Superman back.

The Flash was AWESOME

Green Lanterns was very good. This is coming from someone who's never read anything with Baz or Cruz before.

Green Arrow was great.

Titans Rebirth was everything it needed to be.

These books were a bit of a let down:

Batman Rebirth was so basic it was dull. And the first issue of Batman #1 didn't grab my attention either but its early.

Superman Rebirth was really good and heartfelt, but Superman #1 stunk.

Wonder Woman was decent but nothing special, it was beginning to confuse me with what her pre52 origin was verus her New52 origin. Art was great. I guess since Diana's confused too it's alright. We can figure things out together.

Aquaman was decent.

Well I liked it. I laughed at wonderwoman's fance on a certain panel because of how badly is was drawn. It did seem rushed though, the part I really enjoyed was when superman son'd everyone. Basically made them look like noobs.

Yeah this wasn't good at all, the writing was dull and overdone while the art was rushed. Rebirth issues in general haven't been anything special but this was a bit of a low. I'll give Hitch a chance his JLA was better than Johns book and like exceptionally better than Johns own first year.

For me, this was the first miss of Rebirth. 2 stars. The art was pretty good but that's where the good ends. The story itself isn't all that interesting and the dialogue is some of the clunkiest I've ever read in a comic. Nothing felt like people actually talking. Sometimes I had to re-read a word balloon because I wasn't sure what it said actually made any sense at all. This was the book I had the most reservations about and unfortunately, they have been justified. I'll definitely stick with it for at least the first handful of issues but I may have to drop Justice League, something I haven't done since I started reading comics.

At first when I saw your rating I thought I would be displeased but after I read the actual issue I agree totally with the rating and what you said, Mat. The issue was one of the weaker ones from Rebirth and felt rushed, bland and it didn't offer us anything at all that will make us buy Hitch's book. The only reason why I will stick to the title is because Hitch seems to understand the characters and he writes them well, but I hope he forgets about alien invasions and threats because it's becoming tiring.

Yeah Hitch needs to cool it with the hive mind threats, first Rao then this thing and the upcoming arc has one too. He wants to create new villains but doing the same thing over and over is hardly new. Luckily this issue was a one and done thing, the other artists will take over and hopefully Hitch is is better off with an arc based structure. It is possible that he was rushed in to creating a stand alone which he isn't skilled at yet. I do like the way he utilizes all characters, involves them in the plot and his JL has a pre- Infinite Crsis vibe which I like. But needs to step up quite a bit after this.

I thought this issue was pretty interesting, and it was a nice recap of what has happened with the League recently as well as bringing in the new Superman into the fold for good. Diana's "we're the Justice League. Run" line was pretty awesome as well.

However, the writing on the low end of the spectrum. For instance, did anyone notice Aquaman says something along the lines of "I couldn't understand it all, but this is just the beginning" three times? That seemed like an oversight
