Justice League of America #6 - Trinity War, Chapter Two

4

Trinity War kicked off in JUSTICE LEAGUE #22 and after the explosive events there, it all continues here, continuing the frantic pace of the story.

The Good

There is so much going on and you can't help but enjoy watching it all unfold. Seeing the Justice League and the Justice League of America clash is something we've been waiting for since the JLA series started. Amidst the chaos and confusion, Geoff Johns and Jeff Lemire manage to give us little glimpses into some of the characters which adds a more human feel. For everyone involved, this fight is a crazy idea. Hearing the questions of doubts over what is going on separates it from the artificial feel we usually see when we get big giant comic book clashes.

Thankfully this isn't simply an issue with a giant fight from beginning to end. Johns and Lemire do have a story they need to tell and that allows us to see some of the aftermath and actual repercussions among the characters. This fight is changing a lot for many of them and it's great to see how they take it all. Amanda Waller really steps up with the way she's thinking and there really is no telling what decision she may make next. Even though it might be easy to think of the actual members of the team as the game-changers but with Waller calling the shots, who can tell what might happen next.

Throughout there is one character we haven't seen too much of in the New 52. Hearing things from this character's perspective and seeing what transpires is making things interesting. Also another character seeks out the Justice League Dark which will bring them into the mix, just in time for the story to continue in that series. The way it's handled makes sense.

Doug Mahnke's art explodes over each page. It's great seeing how he interprets each characters with his style but for me the greatest joy was seeing his depiction of Wonder Woman. Mahnke always puts great details in the eyes of the characters he draws. You get a great sense of the emotions being conveyed and that really is the case with Diana. She is ticked off and on a mission. She looks so elegant and extremely deadly at the same time.

The Bad

While it's understandable for the sake of the story, it still feels as if events escalated too quickly last issue (in JUSTICE LEAGUE #22) and they suddenly end here. We saw in the first part that it was believed the Justice League of America would be ready to take on the League but that clearly isn't the case as there's so much doubt and questioning over what to do. This makes the story feel slightly rushed because the team barely had a chance to take in the fact that they were designed to take out the Justice League.

It might be a minor thing but it really bothered when Wonder Woman referred to Batman as "Bruce." You would imagine the place they were at would be heavily observed. It might be a personal touch, showing the relationship between the two but it just felt inappropriate for the situation.

Being this is a JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA issue, it almost didn't feel like it. The characters do make appearance and have roles but because this is part of the bigger story, it felt more like a JUSTICE LEAGUE title with the focus on Wonder Woman, Superman and Batman.

The Verdict

The action slows down a bit but that doesn't mean the story is. A lot is happening and we get to see several developments in the overall story. It almost feels like this entire story/event was sped up to get here at this time. That's not necessarily a bad thing as we get to cut to the chase. The fun is seeing how all these characters interact with each other as well as the tease of what will come up in the next installment. Doug Mahnke's art is always a joy to see and having him deal with the action and emotional scenes was great. If summer is the time for the big blockbuster popcorn movie, this story is happening at the perfect time.

Would you look at that? Following an act of violence, the heroes had a brief clash before they all stopped fighting; the person who allegedly threw the first punch offered his own peaceful surrender, no one called him an arrogant jackass or a murdering psychopath or an insensitive tyrant or anything along those lines, and even his own opponents didn't think he could be responsible. Instead of heroes continuing to fight heroes, they all teamed up into one big team of heroes to find the truth.

Revolutionary idea.

--------------------------------------

All that apart, this issue did seem to dial back the intensity a great deal. Even so, the only thing I really disliked was Diana's treatment of Hephaestus, someone she knows and is friendly with.

Mahnke's art didn't really impress me here either. Not up to his best, and not a patch on what Reis delivered in the previous chapter of this event.

Bothered by that but not the fact that Batman referred to Superman as Clark too right before that? But I'm with you on this one.

Brief moment where J'onn is restraining Clark and searching his mind until the Flash pulls him off, and then Clark surrenders to end the fight.

Damn it all I wanted to dislike this event and yet by the sounds of this, things are actually playing out well in Part 2. Can I ask why Hephaestus is in the picture because normally Azzarello's Wonder Woman universe keeps away from the main New 52 universe?

He surrendered to end the conflict between the two Leagues peacefully. Seems like something Superman would do.

@lvenger: The legend says Hephaestus created Pandora's box, so Diana went to find out what he knew of it; he told her the legend was wrong and the box existed long before the Olympian gods.

This issue was on point. The story is developing at a nice pace without it feeling like its dragging, especially since this is only the second part. The way Supes ended the battle was cool, plus it showed the level of respect everyone has for him: he's Superman, of course he wasn't in his right mind, and everyone saw that.

Sadly Johns (I suppose) continues his weird trend with writing Diana as far more violent than she ever was outside of Flashpoint. And I really dont get why she interrogates Hephaestus Batman-style, atm he's the closest thing to a godly-ally she has.

Also, Batman's dismissal of her theory about the box is pretty weird considering he hasn't just discoved superpowered aliens, friends who turn out to be real magicians and so on.

No, I believe (and this is my guess) Batman will be the rogue, and Superman will stay incarcerated in one respect or another. (This seems especially true, considering Batman is on the front of the villains month poster with the other Rogues)

My thoughts were almost the exact same as @g_man. The one real drawback in this issue, IMO, was that it focused more on the JL than the JLA. Then again, I think all 3 JL books will sort of function as one big book over the course of the event, so hopefully the JLA gets some additional spotlight in the other 2 books.

It was also cool to see the "matchups" occurring, at least a little bit (Vibe apparently did some damage to Flash, so that worked out I guess...). Some part of me would like to see Stargirl dismantle Vic...lol

This event continues to be terrific. But while Mahnke does a great job on pencils, the multiple inkers are a problem again. Some of the pages are amazing while others look really unprofessional and don't even capture Mahnke's style. This seems to be something DC is doing more and more, but it also seems far more frequent with Mahnke than any other artists.

@equonox: That sounds very possible. I really liked how WW was trying so hard to console Supes and race to clear his name/conscience.Helps to develop their budding relationship a bit more. It would be a nice change of the norm to see Supes bust out with question, go rogue and clear his name that way... Hehe!

@soumya: I have to SEMI-disagree. A bit formulaic, yes. But It served to develop a relationship, push the story forward, bring the teams together somewhat AND bring the JLD into the fold. It also wasn't a typical hero v. hero fight, but instead ended with the hero who f'd up demanding the fight to end and turn himself in. I enjoyed it thoroughly.

Great review.

This was a fun if not terribly complex story and it was cool seeing everyone interact after fighting. Also seeing them not just relentlessly beat the crap out of each other and think was a nice touch.

I absolutely LOVED how Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman were written in this issue. The seemingly cold methodical scientific approach Bruce is taking to the situation countered by the intense in your face magical solution Diana is trying to find while both of them try to comfort Clark in their own way. All the while Superman surrendering himself and so very clearly wracked by regret and grief at the thought of himself killing someone. Awesome issue! Though I will agree that it was kinda weird that the JLA book focused so heavily on the Justice League action.

Oh and the Question is Awesome!

I liked it, it defiantly wasn't as intense as JL, but it was still good. My only complaint was that the colors didn't seem to compliment the art. Mahnke's pencils need a more darker tone to it than a lighter one, like in GL. Other than that, it was all good.

Great issue but my main problem was with the inking!! Not sure who, since there were four, but some of them totally butchered Mahnke's artwork while others further magnified its beauty. But jumping page to page and switching it up with such a big change in quality bummed me out

Really enjoyed it. Trinity War got me hooked. Part 1 was undoubtedly more exciting. But I'm really digging this. Props to DC! Damn :D Marvel really chopped off and dropped its mediocre balls, and what a time for DC to come in and rescue us poor blokes from the marvel shenanigans.

tldr;

In fact, DC >>>>>>> Marvel
