Justice League #49 - Darkseid War Chapter 9: Power Mad

5

The Darkseid War continues here.

A new baby is born to Superwoman, but what does this child have to do with all of Darkseid War?

DC is doing something comic fans have been wanting for the past few years: delivering a big, event-like story, without it interfering with the other on-going series. Having this large story contained within a single series brings excitement back to large-form storytelling. The reader isn't going to feel bored by a story, 8 months in, when their aren't 2-10 tie-in stories a month to go alongside the main story.

Rant aside, the book is just awesome. It's incredibly well-crafted by writer Geoff Johns, artist Jason Fabok, and colorist Brad Anderson. There are so many different moving parts to the story, especially in this issue, and it all flows extremely well and never becomes overwhelming or confusing. Even minor parts of this story, like Mister Miracle and Big Barda's conversation or Jessica Cruz trying to free herself from the Power Ring, work well within the larger scope and deliver some great characterization, since a few of these characters are newer to the New-52 universe.

The battles are big here but don't take over the entire issue. There are a few moments of awesome power being unleashed, and while this issue feels "action packed," there's actually not a lot of action taking place within the issue. It just feels bigger than it actually is.

The Flash plays a larger role here, and I'm really digging on his dialogue with Lex Luthor. Flash knows something large is about to happen, and he thinks the danger is high enough to warrant everyone running away. Then, there is a HUGE moment at the end of issue, involving Grail, which we won't spoil here. It completely changes how we think this story is going to end. It's a big curveball and will completely catch you by surprise.

As always, Fabok and Anderson's art delivers some stoic looking characters and scenes, completely fitting for this large-scale story. There is a two-page splash, towards the end of the issue, which is a huge spoiler moment for the book. It looks outstanding and Anderson's colorwork and shading is wonderful here. The color is what makes this a great piece/moment. Fabok pays great attention to detail, no matter how large or small the panel is. There is great consistency throughout the book when it comes to the art side of things.

JUSTICE LEAGUE #49 does a stellar job at building on this epic story while getting readers ready for the finale. It's exciting, without being a whole issue of people punching each other. Dialogue is the driving force of the book and Johns keeps everything moving through that while developing some newer characters in some key moments. This is one of the best comics this week, and I highly recommend you check this issue out.

One of the worst twists yet imo.

The close of the Superman sub-plot render it all useless.

@squalleon: I didn't like I at first, but it's starting to grow on me. I didn't like though how pointless the Superman sub-plot became.

I don't find the Earth 3 counterparts to be interesting at all, I wish they had brought over the Gods and Monsters Justice League instead.

I really enjoyed this issue and I simply can't wait until next month for both JL #50 and DC Rebirth. I just know Geoff Johns is going to rock it!

The story is amazing, but I hate the way they ended Superman sub-plot and how useless Shazam is, let us see his new powers! I know it's hard to work with so much going on and so much to do, but the concept of Shazam getting new powers is really cool, I hope they don't drop it when the Rebirth starts.

too many new characters and plots keep popping and pointlessly fade away. I might be losing interest in this arc.

@squalleon: what do you mean?

There was no point in making a fuss about Superman's apokolips energy and how it affects him, if he could release it whenever he wanted. It render's all the previous drama meaningless.

Does anyone remember when Orion appeared in Wonder Woman, looking for a being that could apparently destroy the existence? Was that referring to the First Born, or has it been fulfilled? I randomly remembered that when looking at the baby, but wasn't sure

Anyway, thought the issue was cool

WTH. Do the writers no realise that babies are nowhere near that bag when their born

Also, how the hell does she give birth so quickly and without any medical support?

Wondering how they will cure Steve and his likely uncontrollable power since Diana's possible twin is the first man and not him

This, its kind of hard to care about some plot points as things just keep happening.

I'm starting to hate this Darkseid War.

None of this makes sense. We're supposed to believe that Darkseid couldn't survive against the Anti Monitor, but Lex with a portion of his power can? What? There's just too much going on. Anti Monitor getting one shotted, the baby being born and used as a 'weapon', the pointless part of Superman getting the Apokolips energy.

@loklegends: It's a comic book, in a world with men that dress up as bats and fly, I think that's the thing that bothers me the least lol. Anyway, I get what you're saying though.

I really loved the issue. It was fun to read, I hope they don't overstuffed issue 50 to conclude all the plots.

The ending is going to be so disappointing. they got too much going on. why did not let Batman reveal who the father is? Is it not Mazahs like we were told?

Barry merged with death killed darkseid. But you are right. There have been so many pointless sub-plots. It makes no sense. this is Ultimatum level of convoluted.

Like I said in the preview thread, this arc is just a joke now, it has CW level of writing all over.

Darkseid War has been one of the best event/blockbuster events in quite sometime. Also, Geoff Johns best in a while. Like the new characters and the epic battles. I'm still unsure who the baby is. Alexander Luthor Jr???

@erikarlsson: Remember He had the anti life also, an he used back death against him. Plus he gave up all that power.

He did not use death in the battle none at all.

Grail has the anti life.

Plus he was going to kill Luthor before he got saved.

So I doubt he is stronger now maybe if he got on his chair that would be different.

"It's the baby's father" Lady, just how many dicks have you taken this arc alone? Homegirl already ran through the whole squad probably twice, like yo.

And then Anti-Monitor gets dicked on mighty fast for someone amped by the ALE. Uh.

Steve and Grail are back but the main people who made this war exciting are dead. D-E-D.

What is there to cover next? The baby I don't care about?

This issue is a mess.

I didn't understand this issue at all, did I need to read all the tie-ins to get what's happening? I only read a few tie-ins and I have no idea what's happening.

I don't know how but I have a feeling the kid is baby Darkseid and he will regain his power/memories thru Lex (perhaps via the Anti-Life Equation). Makes as much sense as anything in this arc.

this story was good at the beginning and now its just dragging and dragging and dragging to get to rebirth which it won't even have any effect on. We already know how the story ends considering all the references to it during the super league story going on now...

I loved it just like the entire series, the Darkseid War was the greatest thing in comics last year IMO
