Infinity #2 - Fall

4

As the battle continues, the heroes try to push forward. And what exactly is Thanos up to?

The Good

Reading this issue, you can't help but feel the grand epic nature Jonathan Hickman is weaving throughout this story. In the past we have seen big events mixed in with crossovers that appear to be all over the place. From the beginning of each issue, you can follow what has happened before and what is happening in other issues. We get a glimpse and a taste in order to move forward with the story.

Despite so much happening on so many fronts, you can't help but get giddy with excitement as we see each moment occur. The art team of Jerome OpeƱa and Dustin Weaver with Justin Ponsor on colors is magnificent. Hickman sets up each moment and the art team knocks them out of the park. Every moment is dripping with tension. You can feel the regality of the Inhumans or the chaos during the battles. The combination of story and art is what makes this feel so grand.

We do get some answers as the developments continue. Specifically, Thanos' reasoning for targeting Earth is starting to become more apparent.

The Bad

At times this "event" almost feels too big. It is enjoyable seeing the different areas in the Marvel Universe but the sense of jumping from place to place for a few page can be a bit much. It almost feels as if the entire Marvel Universe is in jeopardy. That does give a bigger feel to the story but seeing the glimpses of the crossovers makes you feel like you're missing out on part of the story if you're not following those as well. It makes sense that those reading this series would also be following Hickman's other titles but we can't assume everyone is.

The different areas and characters do add to the overall grand feel but sometimes you barely get to see enough. Just when you want to see more, it cuts to another scene. It might be cumbersome but perhaps little editorial notes guiding us to where particular action will continue could be helpful. Then again, that could just clutter things up.

The Verdict

INFINITY is shaping up to be a big story. Jonathan Hickman is laying things out and we get to see how much of the Marvel Universe is being affected by the various threats. There is a lot going on as the action jumps from moment to moment. Jerome OpeƱa, Dustin Weaver and Justin Ponsor deliver some epic scenes that convey the scope of Hickman's story. This doesn't just come across as another Marvel event. You get punched in the gut with how big it is.

I thought the point of Infinity was that the entire Marvel Universe was under threat due to the fall out from Age of Ultron?

I am not sure if Infinity has anything to do with Age of Ultron

It does have big feel as it should. I get your complaint about having to read NA/Avengers some what. They do recap pages. I loved this book. Great art/story so far

Hickman himself said in some interview I read that this was essentially a 16 issue story. Yes they do recap pages, but you should be reading Avengers and New Avengers if you want the whole story.

And this issue was fantastic. I really hope Black Bolt and the Inhumans take center stage after this is all over.

After not liking Avengers and REALLY liking New Avengers, this event has been a pleasant surprise. Unfortunately, it's got a lot of Avengers "What the hell is going on" for me, but strangely it works for this event. I'm liking it so far and it definitely feels like there are stakes.

I do have a spoiler question though, if someone could answer.

Do we already know who Thanos' son is? I'm not much of a Thanos aficionado or really Marvel cosmic at all. I believe Gamora is his daughter though, yes?

This is not a bad thing at all...

This is shaping up to be my favorite cross over in a while ... I did also enjoy the first "battle of the Atom" issue, as well .

Gamora was adopted by him when she was a child, she's not actually blood related to Thanos. Nebula claimed to be his granddaughter, which was never proven?

this story just took off with a bang. Opena is back, and man am I happy. He's the best artist out there right now, and he's doing an outstanding job here. To bad he wasn't on the whole thing. What ever. The story answered a lot of questions, the dialogue was great, and the ride was insane. I loved it. I don't know how G-Man grades his reviews but what ever. This was a classic.

This might sound kind of minor, but I'm getting tired of the white "title" pages Hickman uses. It just throws off the pacing of the books to me, and kind of pulls me out of the story.

@liveforever: To answer your question, we dont know. Nobody knows who Thanos's son is, he has never been shown and up until now we didnt even know he had a son.

Answers your question?

If you have been following events in the Thanos Rising story that's been going on, Thanos apparently fathered many children across the Galaxy...and then killed them. The "tributes" might be him tying up lose ends of ones he left alive. I'm sure there is more to it than that, but there has to be some connection with the rising series and this being so close together, and Thanos's "children" having a roll in both.

I really thought Thanos had killed all of his off-springs.

I really liked this issue, this event has the potential to be one of the best Black Bolt and Inhuman stories in a while.

Really excited for the issue.

I really thought Thanos had killed all of his off-springs.

That was my understanding from the Thanos Rising series, although I stopped getting it before it ended so maybe they alluded to some child that eluded him later on.

My off the wall, wild card guess is that his son is the Beyonder. Based on what Blackbolt said, his son is probably an Inhuman since that's why he's asking them for tribute (to cover up the fact that killing the Inhumans of that age would also kill his son). Of course, the Beyonder isn't that age, so it probably isn't really him. But it would make sense in a weird way. It would finally tie in Bendis' re-retcon of the Beyonder to the rest of continuity, and of course Thanos would love to somehow get Beyonder's power. And Thanos did once say that he'd met the Beyonder before.

Again, I'm sure it's not really him. But it would be entertaining if it was.

I have to say my eyes were glazing over reading this. I felt like the first several pages were all recap, and then it was one random big thing after another, which I'm sure are connected but I don't know exactly how. I think it's a little overwrought. Plus all those mostly-blank chapter pages scattered throughout are sort of over-doing it. That's fine to do in an 800-page novel, but in a single comic, it's overly grand.

I was somewhat displeased with Thor's lack of protagonism, but that scene when he rescues the children form that dying planet... Man that tears me up, i think it's great they've gone with that portrayal of Thor (warrior philosopher who exudes compassion) recently.

I really hope it's not that Beyonder. I'm just mystified by the way things are going on right now. I think it's the point of this issue leave the readers a mysterious question. I've been following the Thanos rising series I find it O.K. but after reading this I felt like a fish caught in a hook. I just didn't mind about it being a recap or being to random. Somehow the mystery question just blot that out after reading this.

I like how blackbolt is really getting exposure and an important role in it. The jumping from one area to another can be a little overwhelming but hey it's a universal event so it's expected.
