I, Vampire #14 - Winterlong

5

The tables have turned with the good and bad vampires. Fialkov and Sorrentino crank up the action and suspense. Plus, there's a dog in this issue.

The Good

The idea of the hero turning into a villain and vice versa has been seen before. What makes it great here is the execution. Fialkov has been crafting a compelling tale from the beginning. I never imagined myself digging vampire comics so much but with this and AMERICAN VAMPIRE, we're getting some great and intricate storytelling.

One of the bits I've always loved about this series is how it has such a separate feel from the rest of the DC Universe yet every now and then, you get little snippets or signs that it does fit in. It's hard to imagine a story where you root for the hero month after month and then seeing the tables turn and they become evil, you still find yourself rooting for them.

Fialkov's stories combined with Andrea Sorrentino's art is an experience. It's this combination that sets this apart from being just another "vampire comic." The art and story are both haunting and beautiful at the same time. We often see big crazy scenes of destruction and mayhem and there's always a surprise waiting around the corner.

Now that our hero has turned evil, you can't help but wonder what comes next. It's easy to assume that he'll "get better" somehow since this is 'comic books' but with Fialkov behind the wheel, you can't trust him to stick to the average comic book rules. And that's a great thing.

There's also a part or the story involving a dog that needs to be seen.

The Bad

What? This is Andrea Sorrentino's final issue? Yes that's a bad thing but absolutely cannot and should not be held against this issue. I just wish I could read this on a more frequent schedule. Waiting another month is too much at times.

The Verdict

When it comes to good and bad vampires, you can't assume to know what's coming next. Fialkov has been shaking things up and hitting us left and right upside the head with the twists and turns. You would think that having the comics hero turn evil would disrupt the flow of the series but it's added another layer to the comic and continues to keep you hanging onto the edge of your seat. Andrea Sorrentino's art is wonderful as always and it's unfortunate that this will be his final issue. You'll be haunted by the beauty and chilling nature of his art. I've said it before and I'll say it again, you should be reading I, VAMPIRE. If you haven't been reading it, pick up the early issues and get caught up so you can enjoy the experience.

Now that I'm all caught up, I'm reading this monthly. I liked this issue a lot, especially evil Tig and the vampire dog. I do wish the story would move away from the whole, build-an-army-take-over-the-world thing. I'm afraid with this being Andrew's agenda now we'll see some of the same ideas pop up from the first arc with Mary's vampire army.

@longbowhunter:

I agree. This story is so much fun, but I don't want it to keep recycling the vampire army idea. Too much potential to just throw it away on rehashing.

My problem with this is that Tig was trying to get laid in a bar. Isn't she sixteen?!

@thenexusrebound: Bingo!
@doordoor123: Nah, she even told the dude right before she took a bite out of him he wasnt getting laid. Still I think underage drinking and sex with a minor is still more accepted in this country than turning people into vampires...I think?

Even if she was only doing it to manipulate him, it was still wrong. She is sixteen! And her get up was really revealing for her age.

@doordoor123: Have you seen highschools these days? Its pretty bad. 15 year olds are sexually active these days...

That being said this issue was great Tony hit it on the head when he said that your really never know what to expect. People always like to think they know whats comming but this series has so many twists and turns that it truly is a great piece of work. any idea who is taking over for Sorrentino? Sad to see an art change.

It doesn't matter how sexually active anyone is. It is a sixteen year old girl that a guy in his mid-20s is fawning over to have sex with.

Yeah I hate to break this to you, but High school girls have sex with college guys all the time.

Some girl have a thing for older guys, it doesn't make them slut or dumb just poor decisions lol.

Anyway great issue! I never thought I be into a vampire comic book after all the damage romance novel and Women did to Vampires.

You know you're right. Rape happens too. There should be more rape in comics. Because the little rape that we've seen in comics isn't enough.... You see?

It also felt very out of place in this kind of book. Tonally. This isn't a gritty book. It is dark, but not gritty. It was written as if Jeph Loeb was writing it. Did Joshua give Jeph a few pages of his book to write?

Yeah because I said I support rape, that's obviously what I meant right? No, and I didn't say it was right but scumbag guys do it all the time.

I don't think it was gritty at all I think it was logical. The easiest way to lure in a victim unnoticed is likely to seduce them at a bar.

I would prefer she feeds on scambags than teenagers with futures ahead of them anyway.

Nope. You're in the wrong here. It isn't natural for you to enjoy that.

Enjoy what? You're not making sense.

It's perfectly logical for her to use her looks to pick up victims. Your problem with this is kind of silly when it's the easiest way for her without causing a scene.

I would just like to say that Andrew clearly states the guy is 19, not in his mid 20s.

@Franchise1590: What @doordoor123: is saying here, is that they shouldn't be using an under-aged girl the way they did. While it may happen in real life as you mentioned, it does not necessarily make it right. Its a strange concept to think about though, does being a vampire annul her innocence or does she forever retain her under-aged status?

Essentially stealing someone's life force I'd say yeah your innocence is kinda ruined at that point.

If someone was stealing my blood I'd call them a bad person probably, of course context like we get here makes a world of difference.

you are reading too much into that scene, it doesnt matter if she is 16 or 18, she was a vampire

and she didnt get laid anyways

Its practically just like when supergirl tried to hit on Nightwing years ago

This is a vampire story that deserves to be turned into a movie, instead of Twlight. Im not a Twilight hater, im just saying the concept and story of I,Vampire is way better than that of twlight and any other vampire tv show, movie, book in the last 10 years.

Just finished 14 and totally agree with Tony's review. This comic has been stellar since day one. Green Arrow is soooo lucky to be getting Sorrentino, his and Maiolo's work has been the best thing in comics for the last 14 months. And with no breaks or schedule mishaps.

The first trade seemed to do quite well. I hope all the love for this book keeps it going, if the monthly sales make it look vulnerable.

Oh, and Tig's an undead vampire, it's fiction and seducing / entrapping Charles moved the story along. She wouldn't be underage here in the UK and she's the one in control of the action. It may have felt more "icky" if he was hitting on her, but that's not the way it went.
