Hunger #2

4

Joshua Hale Fialkov has brought Galactus to the Ultimate Universe and he's ready to eat it. (Galactus, not Fialkov).

The Good

Last issue we saw a focus on Rick Jones, the Protector of the [Ultimate] Universe. We also saw a very epic entrance by Galactus. After the Gah Lak Tus swarm merged with Galactus, there was no doubt things are going to get really bad for the Ultimate Universe.

If that was cool enough, we get to see Silver Surfer again. It's been a while in the Ultimate Universe. With him and Rick Jones joining forces, could this be the end of Galactus? Not likely since there's still two more issues after this. What you'll want to see is what the interaction between Galactus and Ultimate Silver Surfer is like.

That's part of the beauty in having Galactus find his way in this universe. It's not the same universe he's used to. It brings questions of what is even the basic matter or structure like compared to what he's used to. If there was a purpose for his existence and the destruction he caused, does that purpose extend into the Ultimate Universe?

Leonard Kirk's art wonderfully captures the space 'feel' needed for this title. Jesus Aburtov's colors look great. Usually I have a problem with the coloring in comics set in space or ones that have a sci-fi setting. Seeing the Silver Surfer, Rick in his cosmic guise, the Kree and Chitauri and of course Galactus makes this all exciting.

The Bad

We're half way through and now the cynical comic book reader in me is starting to emerge. Galactus is determined to eat everything. He says he will not be stopped. I like Galactus but should we be rooting for him? The Gah Lak Tus swarm still plays a role here as Galactus has sort of had an upgrade. I wasn't a huge fan of the swarm but it does offer some variation and makes you wonder what will happen next.

The Verdict

Galactus is in the Ultimate Universe. That's really all you need to know if you're a fan of either. There is also the great addition of Joshua Hale Fialkov and Leonard Kirk writing and drawing the comic (respectively). It's easy to assume that Galactus can't possibly "win" in this series. Then again, stranger things have happened in comics and especially in the Ultimate Universe. Fialkov is up to something here and with someone like Galactus running around, you're not going to want to miss anything.
