Hawkeye #20

5

Kate's (mis)adventures in L.A. continue and she's not going to like where things are headed.

The Good

Kate Bishop was always a likable character. In the Young Avengers, she easily held her own and showed she more than had what it took to be a hero. Matt Fraction has elevated the character to a different level. Her time with Clint Barton was spotty and it was great seeing her decide to stop putting up with his problems and head out on her own. Trying to make it on her own in L.A., she's discovered a whole other set of problems. She hasn't necessarily gotten in over her head but getting on Madame Masque's bad side wasn't the best move. She is young so provided she survives this experience, she has time to learn.

When Kate and the series jumped over to the West Coast, it felt like an odd move. We came into this series expecting Clint Barton as Hawkeye and now Kate was making friends with other people. I'll admit I was a little unsure of it all but Fraction has made it all work nicely. It definitely makes for a different kind of story and it feels like we're reading two different comic series.

Annie Wu's art and Matt Hollingsworth's colors are spot on. The more you see, the more of the adventures of Kate you want to see. It's not Clint but you can feel the spirit of the series that Fraction has created. You can't help but want to root or cheer for Kate as she gets in deeper and deeper into the mess she's stumbled upon. I was a little dismayed at this issue not continuing Clint's part of the story but within the first few pages he was the last thing on my mind. I would totally love to see more stories of Kate as a private eye.

The Bad

You can't deny that Kate and parts of the story gets a little too cutesy. It's not really something to complain about but a couple parts were a little too tongue in cheek, despite the moments of despair.

The Verdict

I've always preferred the Clint Barton stories in this series but Fraction, Wu, and Hollingsworth completely sold me on Kate taking the spotlight with this issue. There's a crazy range of emotions going on and things don't go great for Kate, despite her usual upbeat and cheerful nature. This is the sort of comic you want to read slowly to savor each moment. You simply don't want it to end. This issue was well worth the wait and you'll be bummed once you've read it and it's over. But you can always read it again. It's definitely going to be interesting to see what happens next.

I'm happy to see this issue was really good, because sometimes I get a little anxious about picking up the Kate Bishop based issues.

I enjoyed the issue as well, with the long gaps I was starting to hate the Kate stories not because they were bad but because it kept the Clint stories farther away. This was pretty noticeable most during the long cliffhanger hiatus. That being said I didn't feel that way this issue that brought good amount of action, humor, and charm. I also like the odd cameos and some serious nods to her Young Avengers roots.

Either way I'm excited for the next issue of Hawkeye, but let's be honest that's not a surprise if anything it's more of a problem... :(

That opening mug shot of Kate was perfect. Love the art they did for Kate this issue. The story jumps around a lot but after a second read it's easier to understand.

Also, that USB arrow :D

This was a strong end to the Kate stories with some super cool art by Annie Wu. I really enjoyed the slightly disjointed progression of the narrative. Its shame that the end is in sight now.

Yeah, really nice story and art. It really brought me back into this side of the story.

I kind of wish I had any memory of what happened before, since the last issue in this arc feels like it came out a year ago. I'm scared to check, because that may not be an exaggeration.

A pretty average issue if you ask me. I am not that big of a fan of the Kate side of the book because it just doesn't seem entertaining enough for me compared to the Clint story. I wanted to see Clint again because after all of the waiting and the last solid issue I really didn't want to wait any longer to see him again in action but I gues we really do have to wait. Also, the artwork wasn't clicking for me.

I'm really glad Kate is finally coming back to the east coast. I am going to miss the gay guys and Harold H(arold) Harold though. It's a shame that a solo book about Kate Bishop wouldn't sell if it wasn't half a Clint Barton book.

I am really late here, but I had to comment on this issue. I agree with the majority of this review and although I guess one could say there was a "cutesy" thing with Kate, it was in sharp contrast to just how bad_ss she is. There was a lot to take in with this issue and I almost felt spoiled as a comics fan.

I look forward to seeing how things pan out back in New York.
